do you believe or agree to this? i'm a sporty person and a full-blooed Roman Catholic. and yoga, given a time, is one of the sport or form of exercise, I would like to try.. but while browsing the net today, I stumbled upon an article that tells its very unChristian to practice this? as for my personal belief, it shouldn't be. afterall, you are not replacing your faith but just doing another form of exercise. what can you say?

I am not a Christian or Buddhist so as an outsider i don't see the reason for the conflict.Yoga is a way to connect body and mind, it isn't a religion. Doing yoga isn't worshiping a G-d? So why can't you do both , practice Catholicism and Yoga?

what the hell are they talking about here?where did they get those kind of ideas?yoga is a form of exercise and it has nothing to do with religion.there is nothing wrong doing that thing as what is important is you are not doing something bad on what you are doing .

hi xenachinah30, i definitely agree, mixing the two is not right. it's incomparable. one is exercise and one is a practice of faith. :-)

I read this news article that yoga instructors in St. Louis, Missouri are up in arms that the state will impose a sales tax. And guess what these instructors claim as the reason they should be exempted? They claim that since yoga incorporates Hindu spiritual practices, yoga should be considered a religious practice and so exempt from tax. I guess that should settle the question of whether yoga contains unCatholic or unChristian rituals. The yoga masters themselves have spoken.

Your faith shouldn't be too weak to be wavered by other things like yoga. Yoga is not Catholic, but this doesn't mean that it's wrong.

The Roman Catholic church has a lot to say about a lot of things don't they? I'm also a yoga practitioner and I was born a Roman Catholic. Although, I'm no longer a practicing one, the beliefs were already instilled in me during my early formative years. As I grow older, I realized that the church has some mandates that don't have anything to do with religion at all or even spirituality. Because of this, I have decided to take everything that comes from them with a grain of salt. Just do what feels right for you. For me yoga is a form of exercise and relaxation technique. It does not, in any case, replace religion or spirituality for me. So who cares about what the RC church thinks? lol. But if it matters to you, as long as you're not doing anything wrong, or worse, being threatened with excommunication, then I don't see any reason why you should stop practicing.

hi stellar, thanks for the response.. and we're on the same side, yoga is just yoga, an exercise.. and our faith or religious belief is another thing and it is bigger and not related to each other. happy mylotting. :-)

I don't think so. Yoga is useful for your health. It trains your minds and also your body. When it comes to faith, I think there's no connection with the yoga training. My conclusion is don't think about it. Do yoga for the sake of own health

No, I don't think there is anything anti-Catholic about practicing yoga. I think most people, or at least most Westerners, who practice yoga do so as a mental and physical exercise, and not as a statement of their religious beliefs.

I go with you on that friend. I am a Christian and I also practice yoga as a mode of mind and body exercise. I do not see any wrong with it or inconsistency with my belief and faith. Although, I know that yoga is another way of belief in nature, but that is the intense form of yoga. What I do is just the form of exercise when to refresh the mind and release stress. Other than that, I do not practice the spiritual yoga.

hi maean, thanks for the response. i agree to what you've said. it's just another form of exercise. don't treat it as being rebellious to our own faith. happy mylotting. :-)

I'm not religious, and have been a practicing Yogi for over 30 years. Its very common for would be Yogi's to be turned away from the practice by the Catholic Church. The reason for this is that the Church feels threatened by Yoga. The very nature of Yogic study is relaxation, and when the mind relaxes, many truths flow in. I began to see past lives after several years of Yoga study. This, the Church could not abide, because it would seriously affect the bottom line,(Money)! Who is going to worry (and pay) about going to hell, when you can see some of your past lives as you practice Yoga?

hello barehugs, thanks for the response. but i don't agree the practicing yoga could make you feel turned away from practicing your faith as a Catholic. just my two cents. but I definitely respect your way of living. :-)

Hi gohoi,Net is not the ultimate mentor, its only helps one to do the things in a certain manner or more perfectly, hence its not the computer or the Net but we the human beings have to decide what is good and what is bad and in that case even any religion does not hold its place. In any case whether its a Yoga or any form of other exercise, one has to take it,then find it,does it suits one or not and simply either follow it or reject it,as simple as that. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2109865.aspx Happy mylotting and stay fit both mentally and physically.

Ha ha ha ha... I don't agree with this! Promise! Why would anyone think that way? Ha ha.. (^_^) Anyway, what I know about Yoga is from Buddhist. Correct me if I am wrong.. so, maybe that is the reason why some people think that doing Yoga is very unchristian.

..hehe same here. that's is why I don't totally agree.. anyways, about its origin. it's uncertain but wiki says its part of the Hindi philosophy. :-)

Besides being a very healthy practice,Yoga takes you on a spiritual journey and gives you a deep knowledge of the world.Western civilization knows Yoga only by the famous exercises for achieving body flexibility. However, the most important task of yoga is to maintain a union of mind and body. The physical stretching in yoga is not practiced because of the desire to develop an athletic body, but to make all of the muscles relax so that the mind prpares for meditation. Here's what Orthodox church actually denies-meditation.And since yoga is closely connected with meditation,is therefore to be denied also. Yoga says in meditation you open all of your senses for the Divine energy to enter your body. And Christian religion says this energy can be misleading-it can come from God but it can either come from Satan.Orthodox church believes people can be possessed by demons who enter the body in meditation. So if you want to strictly follow Catholic religion, you have to practice Hatha Yoga-a small branch of the philosophy of Yoga and it is dedicated only to some basic breathing and stretching practice that is healthy for your body. The rest of Yoga is an attempt to find God through meditation.

hi gahoi. Yoga isn't uncatholic. You're not worshipping other gods, don't believe in everything you see in internet. Some extremist catholics classify many practices as "Uncatholic". If you are happy doing this, don't mind. You're not disrespecting God. happy yoga for you.
