What have you experienced with addiction?

Have you, or anyone in your family ever suffered from an addiction? Any type? If so, was it really hard to deal with? Did you have to find a solution, or do an intervention, or did you just clean up the messes they made as time went on? If you had one, how did you feel about it?

I feel sad about my brother-in-law, he is addicted to computer games. I just hope and pray that he goes out more often to loosen off on the computer.

Is he very badly addicted? Does it affect his life? Or do you just wish that he would attempt to become more well-rounded with his free time and interests? Either reason is completely valid, but I was just curious to know which applies in your case.
