Do you take additional vitamins besides the ones in your food?

So the thing is... I have been feeling kind of tired for a long time now, and someone suggested I might need to take some more vitamins. But I have no idea which ones! Should I contact a doctor first and have a blood test or can I just get vitamins on my own? Do people who work in these health stores know what I need, or do I need to talk to a professional? (The thing is that my doctor lives far away, so it takes me a really long time to go see him) Do any of you take vitamin supplements? Why did you decide to take them?

hi puccagirl I think eye vitamins every morning to strengthen what sight I have left in my left eye, start of macular degeneration and I think with the lutein and the multavitamins and antioxidants I am really stopping the degeneration in its tracks. I also am diabetic and am living in a retirement center and do not get the fresh veggies and frexh fruit I always ate before coming here.My doctor is also ten miles away so long bus trip but he has me come see him every three months to check my diabetes and he approved of taking multi vitamins too. good luck and do not be afraid to take multi vitamins as most diets do not contain quite enough.

Never self medicate and you said that you felt tires at times, you need to consult your physician which food supplement to take. Vitamins are there to support what food you missed and if your not balance in taking fresh green veggies and fruits on a daily basis. I take food supplements that our physician suggested. About what type of food supplements I take, well my family and I take Spirulina, Cordyceps, Vigor Rousing all from Tiens. It helps strengthen our vital organs and it maintains a healthy body. But as I have said, these are suggested to us by a doctor.

Yes, I suppose you are right, self medicating with regular medicine is a really bad idea, so why would it be any different with vitamins? I agree!

Yes I do. I take several extra. I take calcium, vitamin c too. I even take fish oil pills. Fish is good for you. But I don't eat it. So I take those instead.

Hi there pucca, well the thing is, I'm feeling quite tired as well, and this actually many days, but not all. I think I don't have the need to take additional vitamins, because you'll have to go to the doctor in the first place, because the ones you can buy freely in other kinds of shops, aren't healthy. As it might help you on iron, it can also include other stuff, which would make taking it not really much better for your body. The second reason for me is that I assume I just don't sleep enough each night, perhaps this is one of the reasons for you as well. But if you decide to take them: go to doctor. It can't be bothered that he lives quite far away, but some other pills for additional vitamins just aren't good for you, if you don't want too many side-effects that is.

Yes, I guess you are right, it could indeed be other things as well, such as a lack of iron. That makes a lot of sense, thanks for pointing that out!

Since my work really stresses me out, I often get cough and colds. I guess my immune system has weakened a bit that's why I'm easily prone to the cold virus. I take a vitamin C supplement for this. And when I am really tired and feel I'm going to get a cold, I double the dosage. I think this is effective for me because it kinda curbs out the virus when it's about to hit me. I don't get as much runny nose and cough as I used to.

No, I never take any additional vitamin because whatever amount of vitamin I am taking daily in my food is sufficient enough for a healthy body. So there is no need to take any additional vitamin. Moreover the water soluble vitamins if exceed their storing capacity in the body will be washed away in urine & the fat soluble vitamins if exceed the maximum storing capacity of the body will not be able to go out of the body & they will exert their side effects which in some cases may even be fatal. So my suggestion is not to consume any additional vitamin unless a person is ill & a specific vitamin has been rcommended by a physician.

I usually like to take vitamin supplements since I usually don't eat right. I rarely get 5 servings of fruits and vegatables, so I add the supplements to be sure that I am getting the proper vitamins. When I exercise, I add a protein supplement to help build muscle.

I would say that it is best to consult with your doctor even if he is far away, as he may be able to give you some valuable health information on your tiredness. I would do that before taking any vitamins and minerals. Most of them are quite safe but if you have any sort of medical condition, some of them could make it worse. I was diagnosed with M.E about 20 years ago, and wouldn't have known if I had not had tests with a specialist doctor who was about 60 miles away from me. I have taken vitamins/minerals now for many years and yes, I would say that it has made a difference to the way I feel and to my resistance against colds and flu. _Derek

Hi there. Well aside from my daily food intake, I also take additional vitamins like Vitamin C and Iron every morning. I think you should consult a physician first before taking any vitamins because you might just be taking vitamins and spending on them for the wrong reasons and that might give you bad side effects instead of helping you have better health. And you should also canvass on the other vitamins as well. And do not hesitate to ask questions from the experts.

Hi, I did not consume any vitamins apart from daily food that I eat. It has been long time I never been for medical check up too. But so far, I am pretty healthy and only once a while, I will get normal sickness like flu or cough. But after eating medicine, I will be fine. I believe at my current age, I should eat some vitamin or drink milk for stronger bone.

Hi Puccagirl!. I rarely take additional vitamin in normal condition because I think I already taking a balance diet so I don't need extra vitamin. Recently I got flu so I take an extra vitamin C to help my body to beat this virus and its usually help to recover much faster. I think if you feel tired all the time its usually related to vitamin B but its better to consult to a doctor first in case the problem is not vitamin deficiency.

Yes, I take extra vitamins because my Iron and Vitamin D levels are always insanely low, so I take two each of them daily.

Vitamin B is good. And you can hardly find any other access to it. It is good for your health. Well, I used to take pills to help me feeling better, especially last year. I thought I need to consume more vitamins, cuz I was not able to find delicious vegetables food. I am not sort of vegetarian. I always feel powerful after I had chicken or beef. Though, I got the whole bottle of vitamins bottomed up, I still feel tired and uncomfortable. Then I abondoned it... This year, I developed a habit of eatting apples after a cup of morning coffee. And till now, I have not feel any better or worse. My body condition stays the same. The saying goes,"An apple a day keeps doctors away." I skip meals everyday because of my class schdules and my sleeping timetable. But I keep have an apple each day.
