Are sit-ups and crunches the best way to get abs?

As a fitness trainer, a question I have come across quite often is people asking whether sit-ups and ab crunches work best for developing good looking abs. And the answer is a big no. The reason is that the abs are covered by a layer of fat that needs to be removed in order to reveal the abs in their true glory. Sit-ups and crunches only build the ab muscles, they do not burn the fat covering the abs. In order to burn the fat, start with cardio exercises, then after achieving a good level of fitness move onto high intensity interval training, circuit training and plyometrics. Cardio exercises are great for burning fat during the exercise and high intensity interval training, circuit training and plyometrics are great for burning fat during and after the workout. Sit-ups and crunches should only be performed to complement the fat burning exercises. Performing too many sit-ups hurts the back and too much crunches gives you a stiff neck. I am not a professional when it comes to fitness and body but I can say that sit-ups is one great way of making your abs look good and flat. I had a flat and good abs when I was doing sit-ups alone at my room. I did that everyday every morning and I like the result.

It takes more than just sit ups and crunches. If doing those but then not working the rest of your body as well as eating right would prevent the rest of your body from getting in the best physical shape I would think. That is why I have a balanced diet as well as a workout to make sure that my body as a whole is getting everything it needs and is staying in tip top shape.
