Do you waste food?

I got to thinking about this the other day while watching a cake making show. They were making these huge wedding cakes for magazines. I mean this things are just for photos, no ones even really going to eat them. Then I thought about cooking shows, and fear factor, and every other show that uses food for mere entertainment. Not to feed the hungry mouth. Then I thought there are also restaurants, especially buffets which also waste a ton of food. Sometimes they order to much and it goes bad, whatever the case. Which that's my other point, how is one country wasting all of this food, just making tv shows, when there are other countries out there starving? I wonder if we took all of the wasted food mentioned above and the food we waste in our own homes, how many starving people we could save. My question is do you waste any food while cooking? Do you throw away or waste leftovers? Does your house use the minimal amount of food needed or has eating become more of a hobby than a necessity? Any tips on saving or lowering food consumption for others?

I wonder too how much the resturants waste every day, but it is so sad as I am sure they waste alot that I try not to think about it. I do everything possible to not waste food. And my 4 yo GD does to. The other day I was making her lunch, I use cookie cutters to cut the bread and meat in shapes and she loves it. So I cut the bread into dinosaur shapes, and she loves to put on the ketchup on one side, mustard on the other then smear them together. Then the meat is cut and she assembles it and chows down! However, the other day, we got as far as the bread and I went to look for the ham and I was out. I am NEVER out of ham! So I had no meat to put on the sandwich so in looking for a substitute to a sandwich. I had these little beef sausage bite things that I use for snack and figured...usually I dont' do this but I had nothing else, so I put them on her plate....she was the one that insisted on having the bread to go with them...telling me that we can't waste the bread....so she put the bread on the plate too...took a bite of the bread, a bite of the sausage thing and enjoyed her sandwich!

It was the cutest thing you ever saw! She was just determined to not waste her the bread! What kid that age does that? THey'd eat just the meat and leave the bread! I was (and am) very proud of her!

yes yes. some people especially those who have more, they tend to waste more food probably because they tend to over look what is important, some do not see that the things they waste can be of great help to other people..

This is actually something I have been working on. I think it is actually saving me money as well. I used to buy all kinds of stuff so I'd have a large variety of choices. But then some of the fresh stuff would go bad and it would be wasted. I finally have figured out to buy smaller if I can. Then I use up what I have before i buy more. I also do things like it's cheaper to buy larger packages sometimes so I go ahead and buy larger, but I either cook it up and freeze it or I portion it out and freeze it. This helps save me money without wasting food too!

I live in an apartment so I do not have the luxury of growing my own food. However, I am planning on having some windowsill herbs next year. I also want a couple of pepper plants too! Yep I love freezing!

Yes I have made this mistake too in the past. Buying to much produce at one time. But this is best to buy every other day or so, by what you need. One way to help save food and help your community is to grow your own produce. We are very fortunate to be able to do this. We have 5 fruit trees, a grape plant and about 12 rows of other vegetables in the summer. We end up giving half away to the neighbors and family and friends. It helps out so much. And freezing is amazing. People don't realize how much we can freeze and reuse.

Good discussion, we make sure we don't waste food. i hate the idea of feeding the left overs to the stray dogs, but my MIL tells this is not wrong as we r feeding some living being. i hate it when people waste food, during weddings they should take what they like so that there is less wastage of food. i hate all these food reality shows. people have so much money to waste and not feed the poor.

That is my point. Shows cook really expensive food sometimes. Food in all reality most of us can't afford to purchase and cook anyhow. All just for our entertainment. Now I love to cook, learn new recipes I even wanted to be a chef for a split second. But I still know how to cook on a budget and only make what we need. You never see these food shows sponsoring programs to feed the poor. It would be interesting if they made the whole audience needy starving people and fed them all while they were there. But it just doesn't work that way. People wouldn't want to face the sad reality. I mean how many people change the channel when those commercials come on about starving children. It's just all to common to try and forget.

Although wasting food is not a good habit in daily life.I waste food while cooking sometimes indeed.I should change the habit of wasting food.Earning money is so hard,wo we should save money on the food, and don't waste food in daily life.

It does take more time and more effort to save it. Not all of us have it in us. I do waste occasionally too. When I just don't have the time or energy.

well i can say that i probably waste left overs but i do try to reuse them.. the most food i try to reuse i try to re invent.. i can turn baked chicken one night into pasta and chicken the next or chicken enchiladas. or hambgers one night i can turn it into hambger helper the next i try to re use things but if its beef or something not tender i cant reuse it...

Yes some stuff is hard to reuse. We just gotta try to ration out how much we really need to cook. It's hard sometimes. We have dogs for things like these though.

no i don't... as much as i can, i won't waste any food because it is a sin and as you say, there are many people who are starving out there... so i always try to recycle food if i can and only buy food as necessary... i won't buy excessively to avoid throwing away food and if i eat in a restaurant, i also order just enough... take care and have a nice day...

Thanks lingli...I am glad everyone so far has said they don't waste food, but I don't think many people would admit it if they did.

There tends to be food wasted in our household, although i try not to let food go to waste because its a waste of money then and fills the bin up when it doesn't need to. Most of the time its the children that leave food behind not us.

Yes children are for sure the hardest to keep from wasting food. They don't know the consequences of it. As hard as it may seem when my kids don't want to eat I do tell them there are other kids in other countries who only have rice to eat or not even that. It makes them think.

NO WAY!! I was brought up in the 1950's by parents who had gone through rationing and food shortage and I was taught the importance of thrift in all ways and especially food. Bread that is getting stale I make into breadcrumbs and freeze; the carcass of my chicken is boiled to make soup, left over potatoes make fish cakes, croquettes etc, left over vegetables are used in soups and stews - I NEVER throw out food. Any of the unusable food that ids inevitable - like peelings, apple cores etc are either fed to the hamster, tortoise or bird or thrown on the compost heap,. With so many people unable to afford or even find food it is criminal to waste it.

Wow a lot of good tips there. The compost pile, and saving stuff you would never think of. Your parents did teach you well.

I used to be one of the wasteful ones. And when the waste was the result of my uncertainty about what the right amount was, I was also one of the frustrated ones. those are among the reasons that Dee Brock and I Wrote food FAQ: substitution, yields, equivalents, we knew from our own experiences that people often find themselves throwing away bits of food. you're probably the same. whether its because you chop more onion than you need or because you misjudge how big a chunk if gingerroot is required for 1 tablespoon minced, little bits of waste are common. but the little bit do add up.

That is one thing I was always bad about wasting is pieces of onion. Thanks for your response. I am glad you only used to be wasteful and have since changed your ways.

My mom and i used to cook again the leftover by just putting it in oven. And if there leftover in a celebration, for example birthday, we invite more people or we used to give foods on street children.

This is a good idea also. But around where I live you would have to know the children. People are scared to let their kids take from just anyone. But I know a lady up my street who has 11 kids. They spent the whole summer picking apples from our apple tree, I was glad the apples were not wasted like most years. I think everyone needs to learn to share more and give more.

Wow the 13th response and finally the first to admit they do waste food. It is hard not to in the world we live in today. Just try to think of starving children when you go to through it away, try to not let your eyes be bigger than the stomach lol. I do sometimes waste food too. I am getting better though.

I would say there should be one company who should going to take this all food.and with some kind of processs to keep it good and neat. Then supply it to the needy place where people need it.It could be possible.
• United States
8 Nov 10
Yes that may be possible. But a lot of this food goes bad fast. We don't want even the starving to eat rotten food. It's so hard no matter how we look at it, the solutions aren't a simple change. It could be possible though. Someone needs to come up with a great plan.

There are a few times that we end up wasting food in our house, but that is mostly because of the fact that my son and daughter don't typically finish all of the food that is put on their plates at meal times. That said, I have learned to only cook the amount of food that we need for a meal and not much more than that. When it comes to the small amounts of leftovers that we have, I will typically put them in the fridge and either I or my son will eat them for lunch the following day.

My family tries our best not to waste food and the only time we throw it out is if it goes bad. Other than that, we do not waste our food.

Yes, I think this is very bad thing that we are wasting our food, we can remove hunger by this food around the world. We should adopt better practices at our homes to reduce the wastage of food. If some of our food remain without eating we can store it for next time, it does not effect its quality or any thing to store it in referigrator. I think we should adopt green practices for our self and our next generation because food availability ll be one of the biggest problem in future...:) Be happy and be the reason of happiness in others life...

I hate to waste food and try not to as much as possible. If we have leftovers and noone has eaten them and i think no one is going to, I will mix it in with the dry dog food for our dogs. Also I am an avid food network show watcher and I know some if not all of the shows on that channel the food does not go to waste. I have watched a couple behind the scenes documentaries on them and the crew and staff actually eat the food that is prepared. As for restaurants, yes alot of them do waste food and alot of it! However, I have worked at a few who let the employees take home the leftovers from the day. I worked at another one which was near a homeless shelter and sometimes they would take the leftovers there. I agree with you that buffets are the worst. Not all restaurants are conscience of all the food they waste, and that is sad! :o)

I am also guilty of feeding my leftovers to the dogs. At least someone is eating them. And thanks for easing my mind about some of the cooking shows, some other ones though like fear factor, or similar ones, they swim in food sometimes lol. I think all companies should try to help the local homeless with their leftovers. Americans especially, we waste soooo much of everything. Food, water, and many other precious resources.
