I was browsing around online and came across an article about Zac Efron being offered the lead role in the live action Akira movie. I don't know if it's just a rumor or a done deal or whatever but my first thought was "You gotta be kidding me!" I honestly don't see this guy playing the leader of a biker gang in futuristic Tokyo. Not to diss the guy or anything but I just can't picture it. Akira is an anime classic so this live action movie is going to be scrutinized by many people. And I can already see criticism coming if he is indeed given the role of Kaneda. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Nooo!! Lol I would rather they put someone unpopular but could give justice to the role that let someone popular play it and ruin it. o_0

Haha...that was my reaction too when I first heard this rumor. But I don't think we have to worry about this. I later heard that he was not going to be playing the part of Kaneda.

I know what you mean. I was super relieved too. That would have ruined my picture of Akira since I do have a soft spot for it. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninja Scroll were the first anime movies I ever saw and I'd hate to see any of them ruined by some crappy adaption.

Hah! Saved! I relayed this to bf as well, as he was the one who showed me Akira. He had the same reaction as well :D

I know what you mean. That was my initial reaction when I saw this too. The only good thing is that this is not confirmed yet. It's just a rumor and speculation at the moment but just the thought of it sends chills down my spine (and not the good kind either).

LOL I am pretty bothered by this. To others it may seem like an over-reaction but I just hope that in the even that they do make a live action movie, they won't overkill the cast. I hope this is just like the rumor that Jesse McCartney playing Zuko in the Last airbender...Totally FALSE. LOL

I completely understand. I'd rather have a bunch of no-name actors instead of big names as long as the movie turns out as good as the anime.

Zac efron is no good for that role. He looks thin and nothing like an anime. He should've just stayed in high school musical to begin with. His movies suck and all. He's not a great actor anyway.

Well, I haven't seen any of the shows he's acted in (that's right, I've never watched High School Musical) so I don't know if he's a good actor or not. But you don't have to worry, I recently heard that he will not be the lead actor in Akira so fans can breathe easily.

I really don't like anime live action movies, they make anime look cheap. Look at how they butchered the dragon ball series, the movies does not have sayains or any other form of other alien life. The Akira anime was full of guts and people losing body part. To make money out of the younger audience they'll have to change the story completely.

I know what you mean. Hollywood has done quite a shoddy adaption of many anime/cartoon movies lately. They might as well not call the movie "Akira" at all that way. The good thing I've recently learned is that Zac Efron will not be the leading actor in the movie. That was a relief for me.
