Washing dishes.

I was always brought up to do dishes. Especially when I was invited over as a guest. But some people think that hosts are supposed to take care of everything so it would be weird if the guests wash dishes. Now that there are dishwashers and disposable plates, people rarely wash dishes. Do you wash your dishes by hand?

I have no choice but to wash dishes by hand especially when the dishwasher is full! Somedays I don't mind doing dishes or cleaning for that matter. What bothers me is a lune up of cups, utensils, plates and bowls that everyone leaves for me. What us so hard about emptying a dishwasher or placing items in it? Do I look like a slave? Is it "my job?".

If it's about people living in the same house, than yeah, that's another story and I would be annoyed too. People should take care of their own dishes if they live there.

Hi Lore2009! I don't think it's a good idea that if you are a guest you should be asked to wash the dishes after dinner. I think it's rude. It should always be the host who should wash up. Regarding your question and modesty aside, believe it or not I was raised by my parents to wash the dishes properly by hand. I still think washing it manually by hand is better than the dishwasher which cannot scrub properly the dried up stains on cutleries or plates etc.

I think washing dishes with your hand is better too. I hate dishwashers because it wastes so much water while leaving a lot behind.

I wash my dishes by hand and then put them in the dishwasher, I get so tired of washing dishes sometimes! L.O.L.But I hate a sink full of dirty dishes that is one of the things that really annoys me!! Have a good day!

That's true, it's annoying when you run out of dishes because they're not washed.

Alas, I've never had a dishwasher. I hate to do dishes and I live with my daughter who hates to do them even more. You can imagine, sometimes this is a real drama. I hope that in my next life I'll have a dishwasher or a housemaid, LOL!

I sometimes help out my friends after their dinner parties, because it not usually that formal. But if it is then I wont. A for washing with hands, I still wash the dishes with my hands but then the number of memebers in my family is just two lol. Any way good luck with your dish washing machine. Hope it is repaired soon. I can't imagine washing dishes for so many persons again!

right now we wash dishes by hand, but are looking for a dishwasher. we don't want a built in one. and there doesn't seem to be too many stand-alone ones out there. as a guest, i always ask the host if they want help with dishes. unless i've been there a few times, then i assume its being polite to help clear dishes.

We live in an old apartment with no dishwasher, so we have no choice but to wash dishes by hand.

we dont have a dishwasher and our daughters do the dishes so when they have friends over, i tell the friends, if they want to eat, they have to help do dishes, most dont complain but some do.

I wash the pots, skillets and special knives by hand but all the dishes and glasses go to the dishwasher. I have a beautiful set of hand carved Czechoslovakian glasses but I never use them as I have to wash them carefully by hand.

I have a dishwasher but I honestly prefer to do them by hand if there are only a few dishes. When there are guest over I will use the washer so I can free up my time with my guest and also get the extra dishes done faster.

I have a dishwasher that has broken down and so far it has taken the company over 2 weeks to get the right part and i am still waiting another week as they ordered the wrong part.My children wash up the evening meal things,so i do not have to do them, lol,i leave te things on the drainer to dry rather than drying them up.I have six children,so i get lots of washing up every day.Hope my dishwasher gets mended next Saturday.

Unfortunately yes I still wash my dishes by hand. I did have a dishwasher at my parents home before marraige and preferred it to washing up by hand, the only thing was that for the dish washer I still had to semi clean the plates before loading the dishwasher up so in my husbands eyes it were like as if I had already half cleaned them so why not put slight bit more effort and clean them fully lol. But I still prefer a dishwasher as it's alot less messy and involves less liquid to wash up

OMG, I have never had a dishwasher so I have had to always do them by hand. I use to do so many dinner gatherings and ugh, no ever helped with the dishes. So it is a new thing with me that for the last four years my boyfriend freely gets up to do dishes. Hooray I finally get a break. Oh wait he does his own laundry too so I am truly blessed.

Yeah, public dishes are pretty nasty. That's a good idea you bring your own plates.

I was always taught to do the dishes as well, but as you've said it's a different world now. With dishwashers (I have one as we are a large family) and all of the disposable items, dishes are rarely used these days. Even when we do use glass and cuttlery if I offer to help it is oftened declined and the dishes are set aside to be done later.
