I have seen in a site that thanksgiving day is a day when citizen of USA enjoy the day and some offices are keep close. The origin is from 16th century. But till it is not clear to me. I hope our members from USA will give a clear description of the day. What do you do on the day and etc etc? As a Bengali we observe various festival but Durga Puja is the best to us.

About 200 years ago politicians and special interest groups pushed for the concept of giving thanks once a year for all that we have. There were and are no religious holidays set aside for this day. Once the President declared the last Thurs. in November as a national holiday, closing federal and state offices people decided to eat and eat big! It's all about sharing a meal with family and going to church. It was found before the national holiday was declared that each state had it's own day of thanksgiving. It was a brainstorm of the concept started in the 16th century. Most of us eat turkey, bread stuffing and ornate vegetable dishes followed by pumpkin pie! Happy myloting!

Thanksgiving Parade - Thanksgiving day
I hope we also have a national Thanksgiving Day in our country. Sadly we don't have. I envy the Americans in a way because they seem to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day celebration each year. It seems like the most awaited day for them. I saw photos from my friends in US and they were really enjoying this day a lot, with all the food, parties, the parade and lot more happenings.

salonga, I don't think that we are in need of thanksgiving day. We have many holidays to get together. I am not sure but I think the number of holidays in our country is more than many country.

Thanksgiving parade - Thanksgiving Day
Oh Sona, don't get me wrong. It is not just the get together and the happiness and fun that goes with "thanksgiving day" but the ultimate reason for celebrating the thanksgiving day. Why should people set aside a special day to rejoice and celebrate "thanksgiving Day"? Sorry I missed telling you the origin of Thanksgiving Day. Now here: "In December, 1621 the first ever thanksgiving day was celebrated. The celebration was held by the Pilgrim settlers in Massachusetts and it was their second winter in America. These Pilgrims were seeking religious freedom and opportunity in America but they almost were unable to survive the first winter there but they did by the grace of God. So on the second winter they have all the reasons to thank God. They have to show their gratitude to God because they were able to survive the first winter which killed 44 of the original 102 colonists. They saw how God really extended grace to them because they were almost dying for at one point their daily food ration was down to five kernels of corn apiece. But miracles of all miracles, an unexpected trading vessel arrived, swapping them beaver pelts for corn, providing for their very need. They saw the hands of God working to save them and that gave them hope and lots of reasons to thank God. The next summer’s crop brought hope, and Governor William Bradford decreed that December 13, 1621, be set aside as a day of feasting and prayer to show their gratitude for what God has done for them. They have so many reasons to thank to God apart from surviving the first winter. God helped them find 20 acres of cleared land where there were no hostile Indians. In that place they were able to enjoy religious freedom and God even provided an interpreter to the Indians in Squanto. So the colonists celebrated for 3 days by praying and feasting and games and they even got some guests. They were around 80 friendly Indians who even brought turkeys and venison to the feast. They really enjoyed their celebration. It was full of spiritual thought and great meaning. From that time onward, America started celebrating Thanksgiving Day and even set aside that day as legal holiday." I may not be an American but I am a Christian so I believe in one and only true God. In my life I've experienced how God has been really good to me. He has blessed me in countless ways and have countless reasons to thank Him. I believe God has blessed everyone in His own ways and everyone has reasons to thank God. Would it not be great to set aside a day to be spent for praying and thanksgiving and to do all good and clean fun to celebrate the day? As for me, for as long as the ultimate reason (which is thanksgiving to God} remains the number one reason why people celebrate "thanksgiving day", I find no reason why anyone would oppose having such kind of holiday in his own country.

Herro sona22 Thanksgiving is an additional time to give thanks to God. Our family is all out of state so it is just the 2 of us. We had a thanks worship service, the eve before, at our church. Thanksgiving Day, we had a wonderful dinner at a local restaurant. After we got home, our neighbor brought 2 plates to us. Thanks be to God for people who share and care. Later my neighbors son, brought ham and cajon turkey and awesome chocolate cake. Thanks be to God for His Son, Jesus. My family, friends, church. My online friends. Prosperous Mylotting
