Why call soccer to football????

Is the more important sport in the world a lot of people call football, but specially in USA Why call soccer???? I think football is football I don´t care IF in USA have other sport with the same name..... :S

hi there, In my mind, you should ask this question. Why football was call as soccer in USA? We play football with foot, so it should be call football. But i am not sure why it was call soccer in USA. Per my knowledge, in the majority countries except in USA, it call football. Cheers

It's because the Americans already use the term "football" to refer to the game where they throw and catch the ball and wear loads of padding like the Michelin man.

If I am not wrong it has to do with the history of it, before soccer and ruby was formed, it is term as football. However, due to some structuring of the rule, which includes not using of hands, the broke to be become two sports. Being the elites of the society, they would not want to be associated with the rough sport, that is why the term soccer, but still many call it football. As for the USA, we know they do thing differently don't they. I do not know the history behind that.

In the UK there was football (soccer). Then during a game at Rugby school William Webb-Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it. People tackled him. Out of that a new game was formed: Rugby Football, which became the sport we play as rugby today.

Calling football (I mean football proper not American football or Rugby football) soccer originated in England where it was a slang or informal term. USA adopted the term to distinguish football proper from their American football all the best urban

In USA football can refer to another sports like rugby. So if they don't say soccer, people may think that it is just rugby. Whereas rugby and soccer are totally different sports. Whereas in Europea football just means soccer. So there is no other meaning. People won't feel confused to it. I love China

in the u.s., there is another sport called football, i mean rugby football, so, it would be impossible to distinguish both sports if they have the same names. So, they called soccer,why? soccer is a nickname for football, it comes from the football association
