Today I was mylotting here at home when my daughter called. She has a young cherry tree. A few days ago I went there for lunch and brought some cherries I picked from the tree. But I did not see how many the tree had. It turned out that the tree is ladden with fruit and shwe called me to ask for recipes. I checked on Google, sent her the recipe that sounded easier and invited myself for lunch. I picked about 3 kilos of cherries that I´ll turn into some jam and some jelly. Yummy!!! I usually don´t make cherry jam because cherries are expensive as compared to other fruit here. I feel rich now! Claudia had baked pork with cherry sauce and rice on the side for lunch. She was experimenting and it turned out better than my usual apples. Do you make jams from scratch? What kind of fruit sdo you use? Do you give other uses to fruit as my daughter did today? Share!

I did really well, when the roomie was on it, but since the surgery she's been "bad" and starting next week (might as well wait till after Christmas at this point) she's going to do better.

Yes and it easy to make. the fruit i normally use is pineapple, apple, peanut and raisin. basically i start with boil hot water, put the sugar and mix together with the fruit. wait until a little bit thick and ready to eat but better to wait until it cool.

Hi Marg; I suppose this is one of the great benefits of residing in Chile in December! Our cherry season is now passed. Our yield this year was not as good as some past. We are big on preserving fruit. We do make jam often. Everything we make is always from scratch. For the jams, the mixture is usually that of blackberries. Strawberries and rhubarb as well as apples and blackberries and pear and strawberries. Absolutely delicious. We will make cherry jam as well, when the yield allows. My all time favorite however is the strawberry rhubarb. We can our Bartlet pears which are very nice for a change once in a while and we do prepare apple sauce to eat with pork. We have not tried the cherries in this fashion but perhaps we may since reading your discussion. Thanks!

I love blackberry jam and it´s SO easy to make. I used to do it whern the girls were little. We went to the countryside to pick our blackberries, came home scratched but happy. I usually make apple sauce with pork but found this absolutly delicious.

I must say the cherry with the pork does sound appealing. I'll take your word for it as I have not had the chance to try it yet. You can bet I will be gathering the Cherries this summer though! Lol, yes, scratched but happy. I agree. Those dang blackberry bushes. I have taken to training the ones in our yard so that it is easier to pick without getting too terribly scratched. I have also learned from experience, to pick in the morning, when I can wear jeans and a long sleeved shirt. Helps avoid getting too many wounds. Thanks for your reply and happy Holidays to you and yours.

I made some jam many years ago when I was unemployed and a friend had excess fruit. Then, a couple of years ago my dad had many oranges that were not fit to eat as they were too bitter but they made an excellent marmalade. I think i made a chilli chutney since I've been here as well. That was delicious and great to add to different dishes while they cooked....it all seems such a long time ago for some reason.

I discovered some wild plums nearby. I´ll pick them and make some jam and juice this summer. It´s a lot cheaper (and tastes better) to boil some plums, put some sugar and to the fridge. It´s a wonderful cold drink to quensh thirst

Nice to hear that you have picked a lot of cherries! Indeed, cherries are expensive as they are rich in vitamin Cs and anti-oxidants. But it's my first time hearing about baked pork with cherry sauce...must be really tasty. I have to try it out one day!

Hiya margi, Cherries I love black cherries, red cherries, cherries in chocolate in Jam the whole lot. This year we have not had many Cherries going around here either it´s like the Apricots which I love but they have not been in good condition to eat either. Once I made fresh Lemon Curd from real Lemons and everyone wanted to try it. Just for once I made something that went down a treat. The Kitchen at School smelled of Lemon Curd for ages after. Lot of time goes into making Lemon Curd not as easy as the other Jams to make but it sure was worth it.

I just finished making several small jars of cherry jam. I decided that I would stick to apricot jam in the future. It´s easier

Hiya margi, Well good for you gal. Apricot Jam is one of my favourites too. I love the fresh Apricot of course but as I said before it was not in good condition this Year. I don´t know why as the Weather down there was not really bad. Did you ever make Lemon Curd Jam then? It smells really wonderful too.

I have not had cherries in years! I am not one to make homemade jams but I wish I was after reading your discussion! My parents have almost every fruit tree imaginable in their garden and my sister and I often go home with bags and bags of mandarins, apples etc. They are missing a cherry tree...Must talk to them about that...

Oh my gosh! I LOVE cherry jam. My parents use to have a cherry tree in their yard, and they would share cherries with me every year. Cherry jam/jelly is so easy to make and it taste so good! I would love to have a cherry tree or even a couple of cherry trees in my yard. If I had a cherry tree, I would share the fruit with my friends and family.

I have an apricot tree but up to now I thought a cherry tree was a luxury. The first 2 years all cherries were eaten by birds. But this year the tree won and birds could not eat the amount of cherries that were there.

I don't even know how to cook, furthermore, jam is not a common dish in my country, so I really wonder how it tastes, but I ate cherries before actually, and they were indeed yummy.

Jams are basically fruit and sugar boiled until it thickens. I imagine it was once done to preserve fruit. We eat it with bread or in desserts.

You know what? I am really envy of you because even though that I am already 33 years old, I never had the taste of fresh Cherries. All Ive tasted was the preserved one mixed in fruit cocktails or the bottled ones used for garnishings. I am a native of the Philippines and if im not mistaken, there's no cherry trees that grow here. About four moths ago, I happened to saw fresh Cherries inside one of the high end mall here in our country, i really really wanted to buy, but the smallest amount you should buy is one kilo and the price is so high, 1 thousand pesos per kilo or about $22. Right now that im 2 months preggy, just reading your discussion makes me crave for cherries... I make jams as well, but not frequent, were not having any fruit bearing trees here and we just buy for them. Pineapple is the one im making for jam and I just usually buy strawberry or mango jams in the groceries when I feel like eating them. Good night!

Hi jinjer, Every country has it´s good things and the bad ones. My favorite fruit is mango and here we can only buy imported ones. They grow some mangos in the north but are only enough for local use. Pineapples are less expensive than what they were now, but we import them too. Our fruits are grapes, peaches, apples, oranges and apricots. We export a lot of our fruit and since we have become a country that exports it, the fruit is taken unripe from the trees and it is not as good as before. That´s what makes this cherry treat so wonderful for me. Right out of the tree!!!
