Good news for me, and any for you?

I'd like to hear any good news you guys have too, but I wanted to share some good news my family and I got. So my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of months ago, and the doctor was almost sure it would have spread to his other organs. They had the PETScan before his surgery, and it showed it had NOT spread to his other organs. We were so thankful. But they told him that there was almost a 90% chance the cancer had spread outside of his prostate into the surrounding tissue. A PETScan doesn't usually pick that up. So he had his prostate removed a week ago this past Tuesday. He was prepared to have radiation as soon as he recovered from his surgery (the radiation would have had to wait until late January). So he went back to his doctor to see if he could get his catheter out. He was told it would probably be two weeks (he had robotic surgery, whereas if he had regular he would have had the catheter for a month). But when he went back they told him he didn't have to have the catheter anymore. He was thrilled with that, as you can imagine. But then they told him what the results were when they examined the tissue they had removed around his prostate during the surgery. NO CANCER! Despite a 90% chance it had at least spread to his tissue, it had not spread at all. It's a miracle we are all thankful for. He will now be going in every two months to have a PSA test (anything over a 4 is abnormal for men, when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, his score was a 13). So they will do the test every couple of months to make sure there is no sign of any more trouble. I'll follow up in another post what this means with my mom (two days after the surgery (that is when my dad was released from the hospital) she went to stay with my grandma (her mother) because my dad couldn't take care of her while recovering, and he didn't want to pressure me to have to take care of him AND her). But I wanted to share the good news, and to thank those of you who prayed for him, and took such great effort into encouraging me. Now, I'd love to hear any good news you guys have. No good news is too small.

Well that is wonderful! I'm so happy for you and your family. I look forward to hearing about how your mom is handling it all.. and I worry about your grandmother watching over your mom.. isn't your grandmother like really old? Seems like a big responsiblity for someone of that age who would normally have problems caring for themselves let alone someone else.. Do I have good news? None at the moment.. just more bad news which I won't bother mentioning as you do not need a downer right now. I'm trying to handle my bad news as positively as I can, and it will be over soon so...

My granmda is 72. But my mom is different when she is with her. She does more for herself. Which we don't understand. When my mom is at HER mom's house she dresses herself and doesn't need any help with that. Also, my sister was going to take my mom, but my grandma begged to have my mom stay with her. But I mean my mom doesn't need help physically, like walking, talking, or actually eating. She's able bodied, it's her common sense and short term memory that is gone.

I guess 72 isn't that old. Hubby's dad is like 75. I don't think he could watch over anyone for any extended length of time.. but that's just his own health.

It seems that maybe your mom reverts to her more capable self, and perhaps she behaves in a way she would if she were a younger daughter still at home. That long term memory remains longer than the short term memory.

YES!! So happy to hear of your dad's great news. As for me the only good news is that today I finally woke up feeling better. I had the flu so badly I was so sick for 5 straight days. So the fact that today I feel okay, not completely but okay is great news for me, as I felt so sick each day.

The thought of blood clots scare me. My dad had one in his neck about five years ago, and was rushed to emergency surgery. Wouldn't you know he got the blood clot because the pain management doc he'd seen that day for a shot in his neck, had botched it. When he left the pain management clinic, pain in his neck and head got worse and worse until his friend had to take him back to the clinic. One MRI later and they called an ambulance. So I'm VERY glad to hear you don't have a blood clot.

My dad worked as an electrician when he was putting himself through college in his early twenties. He had an accident on a ladder, and a couple of the discs in his neck became bulging discs. He didn't have health insurance back then, and as the years went on, he didn't want to bother going to the doctor if he could get by okay. He went to a chiropractor when he was 50, and although it helped, it didn't help enough. So he went to a regular doctor who wamted to do a cortisone shot in his neck. And they messed it up royally. Now, since they actually had to remove the discs in that area of his neck to get to the blood clot, one blow to the back of his neck could kill him. I hope he is never in a car accident.

That is great news about your dad. I have new room mates which is good. So far they seem like a very nice couple. They are here for me when I need them. So this is very good for me in case something happens to me. Like last week I had a time getting up out of my bed.

You already know about my good news so I'll just talk about yours right now. YIPPEE!!!!! I'm so happy for you, your dad and your entire family. What an incredible Christmas gift! I told you earlier that I had a "feeling" about this, do you remember that? I honestly felt that your dad was going to be fine after the surgery and you'd all find that the cancer had not spread. I'm so very happy that my premonition was right on-target. I can almost see you grinning from ear to ear.

I got my nieces' videos done and off in the mail. They might get their Christmas gifts by Christmas and that's my good news. But your news is terrific! I'll keep praying and keeping your Dad and Mom in my thoughts; hopefully, everything will be great from here on out.

That is great news AmbiePam! I am glad your dad is doing so well. I do hope that he will continue to get good reports with every check up. My dad just got the call from the doctor the other day that he has cancer. He refuses to have any surgery though he is to scared I think..but the doctor told us to try to talk to him about it.. but he is stubborn and won't even listen. He says he lived this long..and if the good lord wants to take him home he is ready...But I know how scary it can be since my husband also have facial cancer and it is spreading. I have no good news at all right now..except maybe that we are all still breathing..but other then that..nothing...not even a spark of good news.

It was very sad when your dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it is excellent news that the cancer hasn't spread to his tissue. I hope that every two months his PSA test will be less than 4. Good luck with your dad's recovery. Th good news is my disabled son is better from his chicken pox. We have had lots of snow and it isn't easy to get around. With my oldest son's help we walked over to out local supermarket and bought food for this week. With the snow getting deeper every day I can't be sure if I will be able to go shopping again before Christmas.

Thats great news that the cancer didnt spread any further! I dont have news quite that great but the only real good news I've had lately is what happened today. Everything else has kind of been bad luck lately. For the Christmas bureau toy gifting program my daughter got a $20 gift card to fye. While she was at school today I took the gift card and bought her the latest shrek movie. My son was so excited he wanted to carry the bag. I should have paid more attention to what he was doing because he got distracted while we were looking around and left the bag with the new movie in it on the floor at Burlington coat factory. I didnt realize it until I got home about 45 minues later. I was so upset. I told my daughter what happened and told her that I would call the store and see what I could do. Thankfully someone turned in the bag with the movie in it and they will hold it for me in the office until I can go to pick it up. I wont be back up there until after the holidays but my parents might be up there shopping and said they would pick it up for me. If they can thats awesome if not I'll just have to try to get up there sometime soon to get it. The good news part to me was that no one took the movie and they turned it in so we could get it :)

That is really great news! I am so relieved for you Pam! It is good to see the power of prayer at work… I haven’t got any news to speak of really except for the infection I had in my nose has finally cleared up. Yes it was in my nose and I looked very much like Rudolph for about a week. My poor schnozzle was swollen and red and very very sore! It turned out to be a kind of staph infection, do you believe it? No one has any idea how I got it but I am very glad it’s almost all gone now after a very strong course of antibiotics...

Hi Amber! That is so the best news ever! I couldn't be happier for your dad! Our prayers have been answered. And I don't know why the doctors were so pessimistic before the surgery. Anything could have happened and it did for the best! I'm sorry you have so much to deal taking care of your day and your mom so I'm happy that you were able to get her to to go away for a little while. Just hang in there and keep the faith. I'm here if you need me!Always, Les
