Seeing old friends

I was lucky enough this year to twice be reunited with friends I have not seen in years. First I received word during the summer that a friend from college would be in Philadelphia, which is close enough for me to drive to for the day. She was an exchange student so she was only at my school for a year, and I hadn't seen her since. We had a great time walking around Philadelphia, even though the weather was gloomy. I learned that she was happily married, and living again in Italy, after living all over the place after college. Then I found out that another good friend of mine from college was going to be in New York during Thanksgiving weekend. I hadn't seen her in 10 years, since she moved back to Puerto Rico after finishing college herself. She had been married, had a baby, and gotten divorced since I had seen her last. I had stayed in touch with her and received plenty of baby pictures, but what a shock that her baby is now a 7 year old. I still remember my friend herself as a kid, just arriving at college, barely knowing how to do her own laundry. We had plenty of time to catch up as I was able to go to the city twice to see her. I still have one very good friend I need to see, who was my roommate in college, and after college, I have actually known her since I was 16, but haven't seen her in 10 years since we both moved to opposite sides of the country. Hopefully 2011 will bring a visit to or from her! Have you been reunited with any old friends lately?

I'm glad to hear your good news. But when I reunion with my old friends, I feel every uncomfortable because our life is no longer overlapped. The only thing we can talk about is the past. But after "past" being used up, we will fall in an embarrassing silence.

I know, sometimes it's hard because you really don't have anything in common anymore. Maybe it's possible this would have happened if I had spent more time with my friends, too (although I like to think not).

Your post just reminded me of my old friends. My classmate in elementary sent me an instant message over facebook a while ago. She said she hopes she would see me. We haven't seen each other for 20 years. That was a long time ago, isn't? We were reminiscing the things that we do in our elementary days. I was laughing so loud when she told me that I always have a stain on my skirt because of my monthly period. I envy you seeing your old friends. I am looking forward to see my friends next year.

It's great what people remember, isn't it? I remember in junior year of high school, seeing a girl I hadn't seen since she left my elementary school around 6th grade. The first thing she said after "hello" was, "Oh I remember when you threw up in 2nd grade". Thanks...I had finally JUST ABOUT lived that down 9 year later. Then again, someone I was better friends with who I ran into a couple of years ago, recalled how we shared the "K" crayons in 2nd grade (we called them that because they were K-Mart brand and so they had the big "K" on them). And geesh I think that was 30 years ago now. (I am still boggled by the fact that I can remember things from 30 years ago. LOL!)

Yeah, that is also what I am hoping for but they are already in Australia. Few are here in the Philippines. Most of my classmates migrate abroad for a better living.

I think internet has helped to get closer with lots of old friends. Thank you your wishes. I also hope to see more friends within a year.

I am so glad that you enjoy getting reunited with old friends. I ran into some friends this year but my visits were not that great. Just makes me realize how much time goes by and sometimes they think you are still 18-20 years old not the person you are now with a family. I'm glad that you enjoyed seeing the changes.

I'm sorry your experiences weren't better. It can be hard for some people to realize you are not the same person you were when they knew you before. Sometimes you're better off just remembering things the way they were in the past.

I also like meeting old friends. Sometimes we have some meetings once in year and it is fun to see the association of friends.

That's great you had fun with your former classmates! There aren't too many people from high school I would want to see again, maybe 5 or 6, and of those I am still in touch with a few, but not all of them. Maybe it is time for me to organize a fun reunion with them. (I skipped my official 20 year reunion last month--expensive, and I did not want to see all those people! ).

Try social websites like orkut and facebook. I think most of the old friends can be met through the social websites like these.
