My 9-year-old made me realize I need to lose more weight!

I am not huge, or terribly out of shape, I am maybe 10-15 pounds overweight, and still have something of an hour-glass figure (just a WIDER hourglass!) So, even though I know I need to lose more weight to look my best, I didn't think it was that bad, until yesterday. We went to Hershey Park for New Year's Eve, and we were of course bundled up in winter coats and sweaters and such. We were waiting on line for one of the rides which had a sign stating that people of excessive size (either height or weight) might not be able to ride because of the way the safety restraints worked. My older son turned to me and said, in all seriousness, that he felt sorry for me because I might not be able to go on the ride due to the height and weight restrictions. Since I am barely 5 feet tall, it's no excessive height that he was concerned about! (I did fit on the ride just fine, thank you very much). But early this morning I hit the gym, and will be going more often, I guess. How about you? Has anything happened recently to make you want to jump-start an exercise program?

You're son is so cute ^^. If there's a time that made me wanna jump-start an exercise program, it would be now. I'm pregnant and since then I've gained a lot of weight. Well it's not really too much but compared to my body before I was pregnant it's a really huge difference. Plus, days before Christmas my husband and I went shopping for holiday clothes and when I was in the fitting room I saw the yucky cellulite on my legs which really shocked me, LOL. That's when I decided to get really serious on my prenatal yoga (I've been slacking lately) and do walks more often, just as long of course that I won't get stressed out. It also made me more motivated to lose weight after pregnancy and I'm even already planning out my exercise and diet program after the baby comes out, hehehe!

Good for you--pregnancy really adds the pounds (among other things) and it is SO hard to take them off! (Especially when you factor in the exhaustion/lack of sleep factor). Power walking with the baby in his/her stroller is a good exercise for you and the little one! Good luck!

Kids can say the darnest thing as the TV program says. They do tend to tell us hard to accept truth candidly. My daughter told me the same thing and I guess she was just concern about my state of health hence the advice to lose weight. My doctor also agrees with this and after a year of keeping my eating binge in check I can say that I have lose some pounds. Although with my height this is not yet the ideal. No need to disclose how much poundage I need to lose, suffice it to say that I am not happy with what I see in the mirror in front of me. One concern also is the shortness of breathing I suffer from. To live well in the best of my health and to give my best to my family I need to keep this in mind, "I need to lose weight".

As long as you keep your goal in mind, you are making an effort to attain it. My kids have said all sorts of stuff to me over the years--luckily I laugh it off most of the time! My problem is not so much eating too much, but more of eating the wrong things. I really hate salads. . .! Good luck, and keep up the good work.

Oh, my, from the mouths of babes, as they say! I'm sure the winter clothing made a contribution. It does hit you more when they say something though, doesn't it,because kids tell the truth and are not strong on tact sometimes! Ok, so neither are adults - thinking of the delightful lady who asked me 'when its due' (its not!) After which instead of being embarrassed and leaving it at that, she continued apologizing and saying "oh, I thought so you see because you have a bit of a ....' Yes, THANK YOU! God bless her. With an additional fifty pounds, preferably.

OMG! That happened to me too, once, but interestingly, it turned out I WAS pregnant, I just didn't know it yet. Whew! I think there's a reason kids are so cute--some sort of self-preservation thing!!

Not really for me it's quite the opposite my mom actually wants me to eat more and so does my dad, but I am happy with my weight and I really can't gain weight because of my high metabolism. Before I used to weigh 110 pounds and now I weigh 98 pounds I think the reason that I am losing weight may be due to my depression and since I am depressed all the time I don't really like to eat a lot. O only eat like three times a day. I know it might sound kind of bad I don't know if it's healthy for me to weigh that much I am almost going to turn 19 and I still look so young which is not very fun because a lot of people still think that I am a little kid so I am not really treated like an adult. Oh well life goes on. Still I am doing exercise because I want to be healthy and live longer. So that way when I am an old lady I can run and stuff and I won't have to many medical issues. I want to probably live up to be 100 that would be so cool.

That's a tough one--I know people often wish they could lose more weight easily, but I know it's actually harder to put on weight than take it off, especially if you have a medical condition. And putting on weight while still trying to exercise and remain healthy is even harder. Don't stop exercising, though, because that is too beneficial to give up, and should help with the depression, too. Maybe drinking power milk-shakes and such? Or low-fat ice cream? Just a thought. Good luck!

Do you still have the fiancee? Not sure I would . . ! Kids are another story, we are stuck with them no matter what they say! You are right, my 16 layers of winter clothing did make me look rounder than normal--but my kids see me without all that, they should know I am not that round!!!! (Or am I?)

Good for you!! It sounds like you are doing very well, actually. I know one tip--don't exercise the same muscles groups two days in a row--they need to break down and build back up first. Hope that helps!

At least you are starting to take the steps that you want to get back into shape. I really need to start excercising again too. If I could afford a gym membership then I would go every day.

To be honest..at that age..I really wouldn't take it to heart. You were able to ride the ride..right? It's that at that age..20 is old and anthing over a hundred pounds might as well be a ton. There is a lot of media that portrays a normal weight as being 95 pounds. Although this is not very realistic..it is what they see in the movies and magazines. 10-15 pounds is not that much. You are a woman..not a girl. Curves are to be expected. Don't be so hard on yourself but if you see a way to live a healthier lifestyle..go for it.

For the longest time, I had convinced my kids that I was only 16, and they thought that was old! (That ended when they learned addition and subtraction). And yes, I was able to ride the ride, no problem. Shooting all of the chocolate aliens was another matter, but that has nothing to do with my weight! I am trying to be healthier, and walk more often, but we have had so much snow here it's been difficult. At least I get exercise shoveling.

Kids can just be so brutally honest with the things they feel and see can't they?!?Oh well, at least it got you off your butt and to the gym whether you "needed" it or not it will still be beneficial!

Has anything happened recently to make me want to start an exercise program? YES! The tightness of my pants and the reading on my bathroom scale. I stepped on it the other morning and discovered I had gained another 5 pounds over the holiday season. It reminded of that old joke about the guy who bought one of those talking scales and when he stepped onto it, it said, "PLEASE, one at a time!" I'll be starting the diet and exercise program this week...

I know that feeling, too. What's sad is that I had just gone down a size in the fall, and after the holidays, I gained it all back. I've worked out every day so far, but am afraid to try the "skinny" (or "skinnier") pants yet.

Hmmmm....none yet to make me really do something as life-changing as going to the gym. I know I have added on many pounds for the past five or so years that I haven't exercised and I know that I need to hurl myself back into action, but I always seem to not find any time to do it for the life of me. I wish that one day something like what happened to you, like maybe somebody telling me that I really need to lose some weight would finally make me go back to the gym.

I can have my son give you a call . . .!!It is tough to find time to exercise, especially when you have to change clothes, shower, and all that stuff too. But even walking up and down stairs, carrying grocery bags, yard work and such can help you get back in shape, if not lose weight.

Well I'm glad that you are making healthy choices because where I'm from people see health as unimportant and most problems as something you can just take a pill for. I have never been encouraged to exercise more (except by maybe football coaches) but that's probably because when it comes to exercise I'm quite self-motivated. One thing I must recommend is weight training as that is the most effective way to burn fat while not making yourself so hungry you eat yourself back into being overweight.

Agreed. That has always been one of my problems--the more I work out, the hungrier I get (and there are only so many celery sticks a person can take)! Good advice, thanks--and good for you for being self-motivated.

And blunt. And tactless. And. . .! Actually, my son thought he was being nice, that's what made it sound so truthful.

When I wore my special pants that was reserved and worn only on special occasions. It was an eye opener for me. I have gained some fat around my waist maybe because of eating to much because of the holidays. I am now eating less to bring back the size of my waist line.

Suzie- Mine is not so much about "weight" but rather the skin I have from having babies. I have six children all together and though I am tone all over I have a problem tightening up the loose skin. Every time I lose more weight I simply have more loose skin. So, recently on a trip to the MOA rides I went to get on with my son that is designed for the toddlers to ride but parents can ride with them. The woman couldn't get the bar to latch because of my "pooch". I was so upset. So what I want more than anything is someone to pay for my tummy tuck, and yet I still fear that surgery because it is quite invasive. If anyone knows a magic remedy for shrinking loose skin let me know. Namaste-Anora

I have that problem too, from having 2 kids back-to-back. Haven't found a solution yet--maybe some of those collagen creams as a start? They are a lot cheaper and less invasive than surgery.
