Coming events cast their shadows before..how far true..?

Have you ever heard of the saying..'coming events cast their shadows before'.It appears to be a very funny saying.When I thought over the matter different thoughts are coming to my mind.How can we feel anything before the event takes place.We do not know the future and so we cannot know anything about future event.Casting shadow means getting some hint about the future event.When I recollect I really felt sometimes that something bad is going to happen to me. About good events I did not have any premonition.I can not say when and how and I have no answer for such questions.I would like to hear your views and experience in this matter..thanks in advance..
