Would you rather go on you own, or follow the tour guide?

Some people like to take adventures, and they would rather be on their own when travel to a foreign land. While others, they rather play safe, and they won't risk the chance to get lost or be robbed. The might be the same feeling as mine. I like to have some fun while traveling to a foreign countries, but while I am at somewhere where I am not familiar with, I want to minimize the chance to get robbed or get scammed. So, I would rather pay some extra money to hire a tour guide, or follow a tour group than on my own. I just want to play safe.

Hello kingparker! I think this is a very interesting question. Well, I know people that return to their homes disappointed of a place because they had bad food or the hotel was not nice, or things like that. For example, my mother in law and some political family went on a trip and spent one day on the city I was born, its in the beach and I know great places, but they went with no tourist guide or no references of any kind, so they got to one place that is very expensive and people kinda scam them... so they have a bad impression of that place. Sometimes I don't have enough money for a tourist guide, but I think you learn more and get a better experience with someone guiding you. If that is not possible, I think people should investigate places over the internet, ask friends, do some research before they travel, but there's always a risk. Well, have a nice day!

I think it really all depends on where I'm traveling, for me. Typically I like to be on my own. This gives me the freedom to do what I want and to check out what I want. If I were traveling to a foreign country though I would probably want a tour guide. The tour guide would be able to help with the possible language barrier and would be a lot more familiar with that country. When I stay within the United States I feel safe traveling on my own.

I always travel native. I like to blend in with the people. I make it a point to learn some of the language and customs. There is nothing like being on the ground level, seeing things eye to eye. Besides, if you go with a tour, you only get to see what they want you to see. There is so much more to see and experience on your own. You get a better sense of the country on your own. People do get lost or robbed even at home if you let it happen. Then you got those who travel but do not pay attention to what is going on around them like those hikers who got caught in Iran and North Korea. If you do not put yourself in harms way you will have a great adventure.

Hi kinkparker, The fun of a journey lies where two or three people of like minded ones make it together. I have observed people going in a group when they are in a tour. Well that is good, but if none coming with you you have to travel alone though the unknown paths and faces of the unknown people and so and so forth. If you accomplished a journey all alone you are recognized as one with a big heart.

hi, its best to follow the tour guide to avoid err of way, because the more you go on your own without knowing where you go, it will only result to nothing.

Well, generally speaking I'd prefer to travel on my own. The first time that I travelled abroad was to the south of Italy by train from the UK. That was on my own and I have to say that I was pretty relieved to get to my destination all right. I've since travelled abroad many times on my own, but I also often go on holiday with my sister who will not go on a holiday abroad on her own and while I enjoy being free to do what I please when I do travel on my own, I also enjoy sharing experiences with someone else.

I am an independent traveler and I like to travel with the help of a travel guide book and a map. Typically I buy a flight and then I travel on local transport around a region. Then I like to stay in around five different accommodation establishments. For example in 2009 I stayed in Cape Town and two different places along the Garden Route. Then in 2010 I went to Vancouver and also stayed in Nanaimo, an island to see my relatives, Victoria and Powell River. I haven't ever been robbed or scammed. I have been to more than fifty different countries. A tour can be pricey and it is added on to the flight cost. Going on local trains, buses and ferries I can meet local people. On a tour is is going to be other tourists.

I prefer to travel on my own. Before I leave I read guidebooks and look for information online. I also buy some maps so that I will be able to walk around without getting lost and I buy a dictionary or a phrase book so that I will be able to look up the words that I don't understand. I prefer to use local transportation and soemtimes it is different to read the signs or the timetables, so a dictionary is important. In many ways it would be easier to follow a tour guide instead of planning everything my own, but I like the challenge that I get when I have to find information on my own and I like to be independent.

I like a combination so that I have time to spend on my own exploring the area.

If I have got enough time to explore the place, I would prefer not follow tour guide but time is always a problem, one of the thing that no one can reproduce, so it's better to follow tour guide if there is limited time. When we opt for a tour package, tour guide is included in that and we do not have option to follow our own way of visiting places, so will have to follow tour guide. I find it exciting to follow my own way to visit places if it safe to do so. Thank You for sharing.

Of course I will follow our tour guide. I am not familiar with the place so I won't go on my own. I really hate being lost. Besides, I also want to learn new facts from the tour guide. When we had a tour in Greece, we had a lot of fun. Our tour guide was very entertaining. That is why I wouldn't be able to sleep in the bus.
