Everyone (almost everyone) has a phobia, I think... And people always say that the best way to overcome fear is to face it. I was once really scared of the dark but when I tried adjusting to it I got a bi comfortable in it and wasn't scared anymore. But I have this friend who's afraid of crossing big streets because he got into a traffic accident a few years back? He's still scared until now, what can I do to help?

I think practice can help too. I'm also scared of spiders, only the poisonous ones though and the really big ones. And I kind of got past my phobia f ghosts-- but I'd never wish to see one.. EVER

For this your friend needs lot of determination.Phobia is something which is very tough to overcome. We have to slowly develop this. Phobia can be overcome but for this your friend has to do little changes in his daily life. As you said that he went through a accident and since then he is afraid to cross the roads. He has to think and believe that if we are careful while crossing the road we will never meet an accident. So slowly and gradually he has to develop his confident and determination.

Yes, phobias are really hard to overcome- and some people never overcome them. yes, now he is very careful, sometimes too careful when crossing streets.. He is only t cautious when crossing the street where he had the accident though.

I think that you have to get to root of the fear and get it into your head that the fear you hold is not logical or it is normal and you have to learn to live it.

Yes that is true we need to face our fear and try to overcome it by being brave. Don't think your fear and relax when you are in the situation that you feel nervous and afraid. First and it will really help "prayer" is the best we can do to overcome all of this things, About your friend that has phobia to cross the traffic light always go there and walk along the crossing but in a proper time of traffic sign if it is in human to go sign. Always go with him/her but protect her and help to overcome his/her fear by doing or facing her/his fear. And you will know that one day it will be okay. Just give a try.

I think you have to accompany your friend in crossing big streets and tell him to be always alert and cautious in crossing roads. Fears is just in mind, you can overcome it by accepting of what will be happened if you face your fears. Be cautious from injuries or pains in facing your fears.

I guess you have to help him by accompanying him in crossing big streets just to make him get used to it. Then next time, you cross the street first and wait for him at the other side of the road. Then make him realize that crossing big a street isn't that scary after all! I hope this would help you. Good luck!

Yes, I help him cross the street almost all the time. But still, he takes quite long to cross the streets and is very cautious. Crossing big streets is scary--even I'm scared too sometimes.

Hi I suffered social phobia for 18months it was a awful time i didnt go out at all,and couldnt answer the phone or door it was the worse time of my life.eventually my hubby got me to the doctors and i was also diagnosed with panic and anxiety to which i was given meds to help i didnt want to take them but agreed to try so i took them and followed guidelines like opening a window and looking outside for a few minutes each day and if neighbours passed saying hi,this was so hard i no it sounds silly but believe me i was terrified i started spending time in the garden to aswell as other things its been 2 years now and things are alot better i still have small issues and days where i avoid people but it has got better with time.

The best thing is for him to see either a hypnotherapist or a psychiatrist. These people can help him to get rid of his phobia entirely or partially. As you have said it is a battle which only he can fight and win. for that he must give a boost to his will power. Many years back i used to fall down suddenly while walking on a particular part of aaa road unexplicably. Every time i approached that spot i used to feel a kind of fear and then my knees would buckle and i would find myself sitting on the road.I tried to find another way but it was too long and roundabout. Finally i made up my mind that i would go on that same path but resist the fear that used to grip me. When i reached that spot i turned my mind away from it and started thinking somethin pleasant and positive. To my surprise i did not fall that day. Suddenly my confidence got a boost. The next day i fell but i was not put off.I persisted and found that i did not fall.within a few days i was walking normally and soon i forgot that i used to fall at that spot. Its all in the mind and one should work on it patiently and with persistence, the problem will gradually disappear.Your friend should do the same.He will get over it.

Maybe he should get an assistant to help in crossing big streets. LOL I myself has a phobia of heights but until now i haven't confronted it. I just simply avoid looking down from a high building or getting near any railing of a big building. That way, my fear don't confront me everytime. LOL
