hi mylotters, crawlers, insects, etc. are starting to invade my privacy due to constant rain and flash floods. well, i just dust and sweep them in the morning before i leave the house for the office and they are gone, but the rats are really pissing me off. at this hour, they usually start doing their chores of chewing the wall and sometimes the ceiling, which sound i really hate. the fact that i could not poison them by placing food on corners and traps due to my pet dog, they are getting on my nerves. my dog serves as my cat but today she is so busy sleeping that she snores! so what i do is everytime i hear the rats chewing, i throw a thing in their direction and they stop. then i go about my work and computer postings and there it goes again. its unhealthy i know but it is coming from that vacant house just adjacent to mine. is there any way i could get rid of these rodents? any advise please? ann

I believe they don't like the smells of mint and hot pepper. I could be wrong. If you kill them then they will end up rotting in your walls and stinking up the place for awhile. Since rats and mice breed like crazy killing a few isn't really going to be inhumane. If you let them go they will find their way back. I had to use that sticky tape at one time because the little brat was smart enough to avoid all my traps and snag the sunflower seeds and mock me by eating them right under my nose. So I trapped it with sticky tape then got rid of it. Gross things carry diseases from other homes and from outside. They destroy property and eat your food. They also poop everywhere. I don't know why anyone would want to save one. They're not cute.

hi snbutterfly, well i could try this though - mint and hot pepper. true i suffer when i poison rats because they get to die on ceilings and other places difficult to get through and it takes weeks before the stink is lost. ive tried sticky tapes but only the mice are caught.. not the big rats. i tell you, they are as big as the cats. i agree, they never are cute. ann

hi rosegardens, are you talking of rats? na! you will not say cute to these litters especially if they have sores in their bodies and the fur are only seen on some parts of the body because in sores, there will be no growth. they are icky looking. i think what you are describing are mice, the little ones. well, they are relatives. haha! both destroys property no less. so i dont find them cute. ann

They are adorable looking, but that is about it. You are right they need to be exterminated because of the disease they carry. I hate to see any animal suffer, but quickly come to my senses when I think that those cute little furry things killed a good portion of Europe from the Plague.

Sweety Rats are headache for all. I asked my cloth merchant friend and grocery shop friend, about how they deal the isse, i was surprised to hear, may be it works.., it is based upon our hindu faith.. As per our hindu mythology, rat' is carrier of Lord Ganesh, the god with elephant head, so it is sin to kill rats. They offer some sweets in temple of Lord Ganesh, requesting HIM to help. It works. Please don't laugh dear. Thank you so much for this discussion.. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

hi professor, i think i missed making a response to this .. but better late than never. i guess those rats in the temple are luckier. here rats are pests that destroys crops, hence the farmers get rid of them. they invade homes and attack the food and they bring in diseases. here at my house, i make renovations and they chew on the walls and ceilings and make holes. they get into the boxes of clothes and destroy them. so the best thing to drive them away and lessen their number is to poison them. am sorry. but Lord Gashesh will understand. ann

hi it is a common problem with these insects. Either rats or cockroaches or any kind of insects are seen around the corner of the house just running around here and there. I do not know whether it is healthy or not, but the insects running around itself will make a person feel sick.

WWe have this problem also, all we can do is set a trap for when they come into the house. I wonder if one of those electronic pest things would work?

I have heard the electronic pest control does not work. It is best to do some research online to be certain before you pay money for it.

If they are coming from the vacant house there are a few things you can do. Call your municipality and complain. Perhaps they will do something about it. If not then put poison in the house they are coming from. You do not need to poison your house. I would get a lot of poison and pour it inside that house if I were in your shoes. We had a terrible infestation of rats and mice this year, and I laid poison in my neighbors garages. I told them I would because they have pets and didn't want to injure their pets. There were holes in the garages on my side of the fence so it was easy to do. If your municipality does not do anything about it, I would go and complain to your council meeting or whoever is in charge. That is a serious problem not only for you but for the entire area surrounding that infested house. Children and even your dog may get sick from the poo. Stuff is released into the air as it dries and can cause breathing problems later in life. Also they carry so much disease, fleas, mites, etc. All those can be dangerous to you, children and pets because of the diseases.

I do hope you find some resolution to this. There is no reason for you to try to do this by yourself. It has become a pretty large infestation if they are coming from the vacant house to yours. I'm sure your municipality will help. If they don't, then I would enlist the help of the neighbors to storm your city hall. I'm sure they have some problems too due to the amount of rats in that house.

Dear Anny Cats, dogs, rats, mosquitoes, flies, cockroach and ants are always with us, I think it is their birth right They can do any thing Well for the rats, you have several options, you can give them rat poison in food, they will die Second, use a sharp jaw type rat-catcher, it will kill the rat, the jaws punture the body, ugly to look at. Third and the best, buy wire-cage type rat cather, next morning take the trapped rats to a distant place, release them But some times they may come back lol kalyani

hello kal, am planning on sending my dog to my mom's place. i have not told her yet about it and i am not sure if tashi will be welcome because there are so many kids there (nephews and nieces and grandchildren). she might bite anyone who will try to pull her tail or her ears. she is not used to many people. but if she is allowed to stay, i think i can try the poison. oh gosh! just saying these things makes my hair stand. ann

So, rats have some irritating fun with your nerves!? Similar was the case with me before few years by many of them. They cut down my air-cooler, window screens, speakers in the sound-box and even the wirings of an automatic washing machine! The best way was to catch them by wire made rat-trap and throw them at a distance from home, which I did almost for two months. Also, closing of windows at late night hours is necessary to prevent their re-entry to home. They are well irritating and funny also! Take care Lita to get rid of them! Have a rat-free home!!

hi mitraa, true they destroyed the speakers in my soundbox and nibbled on the wires of the computer camera and internet cables. uhhh!! they really are pests. i can put rat trap only outside of the door because i always leave my dog inside the house when i go to work. if i place them in, i am not sure if my dog will be safe. she might be the first to get into the trap. thank you for your response. ann

that is really tt a good reason, and that is why we maintain at least two cats in our household... even our cat "Ash" pays good attention to roaches, he loves catching them, killing them...

hi dweebs, i have a dog and a very jealous one. when she was younger, she use to be my cat because she kills rats. but now she is 10 years old and she mostly likes to sleep rather than do exercise and find a rat. getting a new pet like a cat will not be feasible. my dog will hunt the cat instead of the rat. thanks for the response. ann

Animal advocates often use a bowl of mashed potatoes flakes alongside a bowl of water. The rats eat the flakes then drink the water and die from belly bloat. They claim this is more humane than traps and poison but I don't see how.
