Will you feel embarrassed to finish the plate?

Try to imagine that you have a meal with others. Will you feel embarrassed to finish the food? Sometimes to express the polite manner, usually we will not eat it up and we will leave a little bit on the plate. This is not very good because at least you waste a little food. But here it seems to be a habit.

Hi, youless. No, I will never feel embarrassed to finish a plate at all. If I am hungry in front of others, I will eat all of my food and I don't care who is looking or around me. I went to a luncheon that was in relation of my oldest daughter attending public school and they offered us lunch. Well, I sat right there at the table and ate my lunch. There were two people that were sitting at the table with me and we all ate our food. I will not let anyone stop me from eating all of my food. I am not ashamed at all. I may not clean my plate, but if I am hungry, I will finish all of my food that is for sure.

it depends on the culture you live in.. in ours - it is 'rude' to leave food on your plate because it is as though the meal prepared by the host (even if your dining out) - was not good enough for you (to finish).. but at the same time.. girls 'are expected' to eat less, because you're 'supposed to' be shy to eat too much in front of people.. (girls are not suppose to be 'big eaters')... me.. i like my guests to eat up.. even the girls...

I would only be embarased if the plate was piled high and I ate it all or the majority of it. But if it's a small portioned item, nothing to be embarased about. I try to waste little food here it's either put in the fridge and eaten or added to another meal and if it doesn't happen after a few days then I will feed it to the dog.

Embarrassed? Ha. No. I don't feel bad because I can load my plate up and clean it off. My friends hate it when we go to a restaurant because we would order our food and they may have things that they didn't eat, I would eat, and I would order more than they would. A waitress even joked about me not eating the stack of empty plates I had, while they had food left on their claiming they were full. I try not to do that, but I hate it when people waste food like that, though one the plus side, I like how I have a big enough appetite to eat a lot of food and get hungry again a short time later. I only get things that I know I am going to eat. People have talked about me because I can just as much as a small family, if not more, but I burn through food like fuel.

yes,it's seemed a habbit here but not all over the world i think.if your friend invites you to have a dinner in China, all the food are finished may be mean he /she is not generous enough to give you enought food.but in some countries.wasting food is a bad habit,so friends should share all the food as they could .

Perhaps we shall adjust to our habit in different places? But anyway, wasting food is not good.

No, never am I embarrassed to finish the plate. Here in the United States, you are almost expected to. But I think in other countries, that isn't always the case. But I must say, I love food!

I won't feel embrassed to finish up the food as I think it's better to finish it up as if you didn't finish it up some host might think that you don't like the food their provide or they might think that you are wasting the food.

I think that's a silly way to look at it! I think that if you are enjoying the food and can fit it all in then it is just silly not too. I guess it doesn't matter as much to me what people think of the amount I eat! I know i have received some huge meals while out for dinner, we all have! And we all gasp over the size of them and then as we are nearing the end of the plate remember the size of what used to stand before us and pull our selves up a little so we don't look like gluttons. I love a great meal, I don't think the owners of the restaurants would see it as a sign of politeness unless the meals are drasitcally oversized. It's neither here nor there to them.

just lost all my response. darn.No I would not feel embarrassed to finish all myfood nor would I be ,embarrassed to leave food I dislike on my plate either. that is my business as I am a diabetic and some things i cannot eat and should not eat. we have a different take here'in the US.Here we are admonished to clean up your plate but I will not do that either if I dislike the food or its too rich for my blood sugar as my health comes first.

If you try to use the browser Firefox, perhaps you won't have to be worried about losing your response. The words will be shown up again when you turn on your browser.

hi hatley, one other way, you can prepare a reply and save in word and then copy paste to mylot. i do this most of the time especially now that i am getting intermittent internet signal. i agree that as we grow older.. we have the liberty to choose what food we need and like. ann

When I was a kid, I always left one or two bites on my plate. Now that I'm grown I try to only put the amount I want on my plate. I usually finish it, but sometimes I give part to the dogs. If I'm with other people it depends. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I never finish it in a Chinese restaurant. There are always left overs.

Hi Youless, if there is some of the food that i don't like it, example cabbage or onion.. i will aside it in the edge of my plate. it is not for the habit but for me... but if the food are very delicious i will slowly eat in end enjoy it and finish it. eating in slowly motion means a manner too right??

Why would I be embarrassed if I don't waste food? . Every time I see people leave food or rice in their plate, I remember my late father telling me when ever I have left overs " remember all the farmers praying for months so their crops won't be destroyed by the typhoon or the labor and the time for that thing to reach your plate! and you would just leave it on your plate to waste". I also remember the story of the single grain of rice crying on the plate because his main purpose in life is to nourish us, and he won't get to fulfill it because we left him there to waste.. I also remember all the starving people in the world. Embarrassed?

I would not feel embarrassed at all if I finished my meal. Why leave some on the plate when it's just gonna get thrown out..it doesn't make sense when so many people are starving in the world. So many people take for granted what they have and don't take the time to be grateful in the blessings they receive.

No, I do not feel embarrassed cleaning up my plate. I don't feel embarrassed until I have to order dessert even though I see no one else is. I usually don't feel to good about myself then. Thanks for asking.

We were raised by our parents not to waste food. Every time we eat our meal,we were required to finish everything. When having meals with other people, what we usually do is to offer the dish to everyone in the table and if everyone refuses to get some more, then we will ask permission to finish everything as not to waste food.

I think the reverse is true, not what you have suggested. First of all one should not pile up the plate with food and then leave it half eaten. This is not only waste but also bad manners. One should take only as much as one can eat and then finish everything on the plate. Maybe in your country it is manners to leave something but certainly not in my country. If something is left on the plate then it means the food was not good and besides it is an insult to the person who has cooked it.

I won't feel embarrassed in finishing up all the food in my plate at all. Here in the Philippines, I thin as a sign that you like the food, you have to eat it all, it's also a waste if you won't finish it. It reminds people not to be greedy, and put on your plate just what you can eat and not too much.

Maybe different countries have different conventions about this issue, and also even in one country, it will vary in different situations. As we know, in our motherland, if we are taking or holding big parties especially when our relatives are having a get-together, maybe we will feel embarrassed to be the one who finish the food, and the host will be more embarrassed because they are afraid to be thought as stingy.

No i won't get embarrassed having to finish my plate. I think it is the proper thing to do. On the first place, it is wrong to get a lot of food which you cannot finish yourself. So, try to finish what you put into your plate, or better still get portions which you think you can finish without leaving left-overs. have a nice day!
