Triskaidekaphobia - are you afraid of the number 13?

Some people believe that the number 13 is bad luck or evil. Do you share this belief? I, for one, don't. I was class number 13 several times when I was in school. And in high school, I was ranked #13 in the whole batch. I think for the most part, the number 13 has been good to me. =) What about you? Has the number 13 been good to you? Or do you consider it bad luck/evil? Are you afraid of the number 13? And another related question: How about Friday the 13th, do you believe it is bad luck? Thanks in advance for your replies! =)

I am not so much afraid of the number 13, but I prefer the number 12, for totally personal reasons. There are people who consider 13 and even friday the 13th to be lucky. I know of at least one kid, born by Caesarean on the 13th, so it's like his mom chose that date. I do know that many restaurants don't have a table 13 and some buildings skip a 13th floor (or call it 12B or something like that.)

Oh, right! I've heard of that about buildings not having a 13th floor. Although I don't actually get the chance to go into tall buildings to be able to see for myself. =P But this page from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triskaidekaphobia) tells of something more extreme, I think. It mentions a building in Shanghai that has no floors 4, 13, and 14. (Apparently there is also a tetraphobia there, or fear of the number 4.)

Not at all. I was raised not to believe in superstitions so the number 13 doesn't bother me at all. In the Philippines, most buildings don't have 13th floors because nobody would want to rent office spaces there believing that it's bad luck. Although, technically the 14th floor is the 13th floor. :-) In Korea 4 is believed to be the unlucky number so some buildings don't have 4th floors.

Hi Moirai, most of us (on 5 days work week) are very happy on Friday. It does not matter if the friday is 12th or 13th, as long as we can go back early on Friday, and enjoy the weekends, we are very happy. I think the part about Friday the 13th applies only for certain culture. The Chinese are more concerned about the number 4. If you happen to own a car with car plate 4444, I think it is hard to get the Chinese to get into the car.

Number 13 is good number. I don't believe its a bad luck number. It is human to make things up. It is also human that will prove things wrong. Its only a matter of personal conviction through experience that would really make someone adhere to such belief. And we respect everyones' belief.

I am not superstitious at all so the number 13 doesnt bother me at all. My parents were married on September 13th so being that my mother is superstitious I dont know why she chose that date lol. I was at a doctors appointment a few weeks back and this nurse was saying how she was always so superstitious and hated the number 13 until her son was born on the 13th so she was forced to accept that number lol.

Hi. moirai. I have never really cared for the number 13 before. It is just an odd and strange number. I never like to choose this number when I choose numbers for something. Although, it has never affected me, I still keep my guard up when this number comes about though. This Friday, will be Friday the 13th, and I will live this day as if it is not Friday the 13th. Why have fear in a day that man has created???

I have never been afraid of a number. I don't think any numbers give you good luck or bad luck. A number is just a number. It only has the power you will give it.

I could also remember that my first few discussions here in myLot was also about 13, and Friday the 13th. Although I don't think I believe in all the bad vibes that the number 13 represent, I have in fact gotten hurt on a Friday-the-13th. It was a long time ago, and I maybe I could just chalk it up against coincidence, but I could still remember (and could still feel) the stitches on my head because of that 'incident'. Ever since, I have tried to be careful whenever a month with that date comes around.

Nope, not at all. But I know a lot of people who really believe that bad luck thing about it for some reason. But it's interesting that there is actually a phobia like that, I've never heard about that before!

I learned that word back in college. If memory serves, I heard it from some card or board game my roommates were playing. Ever since then, it has become my 'favorite' phobia word. Hahaha. =D

I do not believe that there is anything like lucky or unlucky numbers. About Fridays, most accidents happen on that day because it is the last day working for most people so they go out, drink a lot and therefore there are more car crashes etc. Also, the distribution of the 13th day over 4.800 months(400 years) is this: Sunday:687 Monday:685 Tuesday:685 Wednesday:687 Thursday:684 Friday:688 Saturday:684 So Friday is the 13th more often than the rest of the days and no i personally do not consider it bad luck.(By the way i got the distribution from an article.)

Some people are superstitious of the number 13 because that something bad is going to happen. They are probably scared because of the movie friday the 13.

(Hahaha. I think I've met you somewhere else before... =P ) I think the fear of the number 13 precedes the movies though. The movies were made because there is such a fear, not the other way around. =P (Hey you!! Accept my friend request naaaoooo!! =P )
