If you have a VHS/VCD copy, do you think it's legal to download a DVD rip?

I was wondering about this for some time. We have some VHS and VCD movies. Because the VHS is phased out, do you think it's legal to download the movie online? Does having a copy of a movie in original cassette or VCD make your DVD rip (minus DVD features, just the actual) download a legal copy too? And of course, the quality of the movie from the DVD is way better than that of a VCD. Thanks for sharing, happy myLotting!

There are a lot of places online where you can download movies, and they say it's legal, but I don't know. I never tried it because I'm afraid of getting viruses. But a lot of people seem to do it, so maybe there are some good sites that someone could recommend.

Thanks for the response. There are legal download sites. Movies can be downloaded by buying them. I believe Netflix and iTunes has them but the service is available to the US and some countries only. Unfortunately, their services are not available from where I'm at.

Well in our country downloading is not illegal, as long as you wont make multiple copies of it and sell it or use them as a business. I use the privilege of not belonging to a top tier country to download things like Tv shows and movies. But I do buy music in itunes. As long as I dont live in US,Canada, Japan, Australia,New Zealand, Switzerland,Germany and Norway. I wont go to jail. It is still considered Illegal. I have an original DVD of a certain movie but the disk got scratched and I want to watched it again so I downloaded it. I know....I'm so going to hell....I accepted that fate.

I highly doubt it's legal. At the end of the day you'll be seen as downloading/reproducing content which being from the internet isn't technically yours even though you've an original VHS.
