I'm a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, and I enjoy reading his mystery/horror tales. This next week I have vacations from school, and I want to read something, and I already read most of Edgar A. Poe's tales, so I need you to recommend me some authors that are similar to Edgar Allan Poe. Please don't just tell me the writer name, but tell me any special tale/novel you like, and why should I read it. Thanks for the responses.

I too like Wilkie Collins and H.P. Lovecraft, but I notice at least one writer has been unjustly neglected here: M.R. James. He wrote many chilling short stories, but to my mind the one that sticks out is "Whistle and I'll Come for You, My Lad." It just goes to show how something we think is innocent could end up being beyond our control and is a great moral lesson for us as well. Another very frightening author I like is Philip K. D i c k, whose short stories and novels have often been made into movies, such as "A Scanner Darkly" (chilling and hilarious at the same time, not an easy task), "The Impostor," "Paycheck," and "Blade Runner" (published as "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"). His novels and short stories often probe into the uncertain nature of reality (such as in "Solar Lottery" where the protagonist believes that he is playing a newspaper contest, and finds out otherwise later, which gave me such a fright about ordinary activities!). I highly recommend both authors.

Hi there! I see that we have the same taste so I would suggest that you Stephen King's books. Try reading IT or THE SHINING first. I hope you will like them as much as I do. Good luck!
