Do you still know how to use a pen?

With a lot of the gadgets we use having keyboards, key pads, touch screens and stuff, we barely use our pens to write. I've noticed that my penmanship kind of deteriorated and I now have to exert a little effort so that my penmanship would be legible.

You are so right, with all the technology and advances that we have now a days, we barely utilize pens and/or pencils. But at least at my work I still get to use them often, because there are alot of forms that need to be done manually, sounds weird especially when now a days everything is computerized. What scares me the most are my kids, with the technology they have now a days how will they ever learn that type of penmanship we have, because now a days most schools are going "green" and utilizing computers more often. That's a bit of a scary thought...HMMMMM

It is scary. And I think it will happen soon. That's one reason I posted this topic to find out if people have an inkling that one day, no one will be using a pen to write anymore.

Especially now with most schools going green and utilizing computers instead of pencil/pen and paper. let's see what we have to look forward to the future.

My penmanship was not very nice to begin with, I've always had problems and lots of people complaining they can't understand my writing, but now it's a total disaster, even I can't understand what I've written, after a while. Except for shopping lists and writing down a phone number or so, I don't write much by hand these days, and I don't think I'm going to, either. There are so many things to do, that I dread the though of being slowed down even more by writing things with a pen. Still, I envy people who have a beautiful handwriting.

Heh, no, but if bad penmanship was the only criterion, I'd be a brain surgeon by now

Hi. beamer88. Yes, I still know how to use a pen. I use a pen everyday. At least a couple of times in a day. I still have a great penmanship regardless of how long I am on any new technology.

That's great to hear. I too haven't lost the ability to do good penmanship, and I don't intend on losing that.

I think it is unfortunate that Handwriting is no longer taught in school.

They stopped teaching that in the US? It's a relief to know that my son still has penmanship classes at his school here in the Philippines.

I have to otherwise I can't withdraw my money in the bank (if there is one) if I don't know how to write my signature. It can proved to be useful when we have to go into legal transactions. I know almost everything are already automated, but we haven't reach that point when we have to rely solely on biometrics to identify ourselves.

That's true. Although there are banks that have paperless transactions already inside the bank. But I guess it'll still be quite sometime when the pen will become obsolete.

Yeah, that's a great idea. I still keep a journal (not the electronic type) and try to write in it daily. It's one way also to use my handwriting skills.

My handwriting stopped working in primary school. We had to take notes while the teacher talked and I found that I could not write fast enough so I went back to printing and have been doing so ever since. I long ago lost the skill of holding my pen properly for nice writing, long before I found computers. The need to take notes at high speed, such as university lectures, can destroy nice penmanship.

Yeah, it always does. Sometimes when I review my notes, I feel like somebody took it down for me. It's way different from my usual penmanship.

No, I only know how to use a pencil, haha!~The pen which needs to be dipped in ink I've never used before, and the feather that I'm allergic to, it's make me sneeze everytime...haha!~Okay, enough of the nonsense, of course I still do know how to use a pen. As a matter of fact, I still use it every day?

Yes, I know how to use a pen but mostly I only use it on writing what I need to buy at grocery or writing cards to people. Other than that, I don't need to use pen anymore not like when I was at work.

I hope you do not entirely forgo the use of your pen. Grocery lists can be electronically written down and some people I know have had sent me cards using e-signature.

I love to use a pen even though I have my netbook with me all the time. For some reason I find that my mind tends to run free when I just get a pen and notepad and write my thoughts down. This is what I do when writing my blogs or a new page on a website, I will write it all on paper first then key onto my netbook. I know this is quite time consuming but as I said my thoughts seem to come easier this way.

Hey, I do the same thing. I can express my thoughts more using pen and paper than keying it in straight in the computer. Nice to know I'm not alone :)

Using keyboards and the like does have some little effect on my penmanship that I tried to improve even after school, but in I way I do not really care because my penmanship is not that perfect ( I'm left handed you know). I think it does not affects it that much because I've been using keyboard and the like for just like ten years but I have been using the pen, pencils, brushes and the like since kindergarten.

Oh, that's right. I guess I didn't factor in the length of time one's been using keyboards, etal.

Using pen on daily basis is my strong habit and being a Graphic Designer I always draw my idea in a sketch formate first and than after applying some different kind of methods to make it perfect so I have no problem to use pen so far.

Oh, wow. I envy you. Sometimes I feel that at the rate I'm using my pen to write, my brain might eventually forget how to write :)
