I can see today where as some children have to walk home from school alone that a cell phone could be necessary in case of emergency. It should not be an expensive lucrative phone and some control needs to be addressed as soon as the child receives it.
My sister bought my niece a cell phone and in one month the charges were $700 which cause both my sister and her husband to loose their account as they could not pay the bill.

Hi brsmom68,
I think it is great that you and your children can stay connected with the cellphones, especially it give you peace of mind knowing that if an emergency arose that they could call when needed. You are showing them responsibility by them buying their own phone cards, I think that is really great.
Sorry to hear that the one got crushed as accidents do happen.
I do see you are fairly new to myLot, so welcome aboard!

I have to hinestly say that giving a child a cell phone is one of the biggest mistakes in the world. I know because I have done it. My daughter begged for a cell phone nd now that is the most important thing in life to her. she has to have it at all times and she wastes alot of time sitting around texting. She cares more for her cell phone than anything or anybody. she has owned several fo them. I bought her one and she bought the rest. I got it for emergencies but now she has gone to extremems with it. she would rather have a cell phone than to breathe.

I have a 10 year old sister and I think it's ok for her to have her own mobile.
I bought her a prepaid phone and told her I'll give it in one condition. She has to buy the credits for her phone and she will not ask my mom for load.
That way she will learn to save for some of her expenses

Personally, I am pro technology, and supporter of the idea "that was invented to the use, but I am skeptical in regard to children and how they are exposed to technology today. Not necessarily quantitatively too exposed, but still too early. In any case I would not agree that my child have a cell phone to kindergarten. We must not spoil children quite so young. From 14-15 years old, that child is responsible enough to give him a phone, but should understand some of the values, sound the unknown numbers elsewhere, make jokes in bad taste, use it for some urgent and positive communication.

kids age 5-10 is too young immature and irresponsible the best age for kids to have a cell phone is 13 -17 years be more responsible also used prepaid cell card to limit the expenses I was in walmart( chico) I saw mother and her 9 year son arguing about cell phone prepaid.

I think that it could be necessary but should be controlled as it could also change the child's lifestyle as is seen in today's children. Children will always be children and it is the adults' responsibilities to guide them and mold them into better individuals.
