Recycling Motorbike Helmets

Does anyone out there know what to do with old motorbike helmets? I have a full faced helmet with a visor that is no longer suitable for use. Helmets once they get to a certain age should be replaced even if there is not visible damage, but mine has started to visibly fall apart. I do not want to throw it out so that it ends up in landfill, so does anyone else have any suggestions? The more creative and environmentally friendly, the better.

You could seal the visor up with some sikaflex, drill 4 holes in all 4 sides of the helmet where you can add some hooks & a chain & turn it into a hanging pot for a nice plant that you like.

Tell your wife great minds think alike If you do that, I can't wait to see a picture.

That is what my wife suggested we do with it! That would definitely make a unique feature wouldn't it! I would have to dig all the remaining material and foam out, but that would not be too hard! Thanks for the suggestion. If I do that, I will post the photo here.

I can't think of anything else but to sell it to junk shop.

Well, thanks anyway. I do not think they would be interested in this one as it is not able to be worn.

They turn everything into a new things too! They might burn it and mold it into another figure like what they do on plastics, they turn it into another plastic bottles or chair.

Maybe a flower pot..that might be kind of neat. I might even hook it on the wall somewhere to hold bolts or loose stuff in the garage...lol..you might have to drill holes in the bottom of it if it were going to be a flower pot though.

Hi Jen, the pot suggestion has been very popular so that could be the answer. I would of course post a picture of the creation in a discussion too if I did do this.

I guess you could drill some holes in them and turn them upside down. Then you could use them to grow herbs or other plants in. That might work. I'm not sure if it would though. Maybe you could purchase a light kit and turn a couple of them into lamps for the game room...

There have been a few suggestions for a plant pot. My wife suggested that too. That might be what I will do, but I do like the lamp idea as well. Now I just need a games room!

Have you tried putting it on freecycle? There might be collectors out there for that sort of thing. If it covers your whole head, you can use it to shield you whilst tiling, etc or welding... you know most accidents happen when around the house. Take it to your archery club for target practice! If it's still wearable, drive along in your car with the windows down, wearing helmet & gloves, crank up the stereo, bop along to the beat & check out all the looks you get. If it were me, I'd use it as a case to build one of my electronic projects in - maybe make it look like something out of an 80's movie like KnightRider or something. Good luck with that!

Hmmmm. You have some interesting ideas there mate. Driving around with it on could be fun, although it is a little hot for that kind of thing at this time of year! I have done that sort of thing before though a long time ago! No good for welding unless I modified a welding visor to fit it, but it would be good for grinding, although, once again, a little hot! Lots of people have suggested making it into a plant pot! Probably the most practical thing for me.

maybe it could be used as a prop for movies or amateur videos. Modern art would be another possibility I could think of. Artists use virtually every object to make an artwork.

Hmmm, that is a great idea! We have a pretty big film and TV industry in my city, so it may be of use for some of them. I could Freecycle it with a suggestion that it be used for something like that.

We have places to recycle anything in this world these days. i'm sure if you ask around at places where motorcycles are sold you will find an answer to recycling old helmets.

That is a good idea. I thought that I would ask a couple of my friends what they have done in the past. I know some of them have kept old ones, but others probably just dump them.
