Barcelona vs Arsenal

February 16, 2011 3:41pm CST
In a good game Barcelona succumbed to Arsenal two goals to Arsenal one to Barcelona. In a game of moments rather than a spectacular showing. Arshavins goal was brilliant though what do you think? It was a classic Barcelona counter attack. Barcelona have every right to feel disappointed though after having a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed which could have effectively ended the game as any kind of contest. Give credit to Arsenal for coming back with so may doubting they could pull of such a result. What did you think of the game and the goals? Any second leg predictions?

they realize they must meet messi and soe of the best players in barcelona squad... they even lost 0-1... and messi stll give threat for them... but arsenal must thanks to Robin Van Persie.. His magical kick made and change everything... wenger smile when see that goal.. slow but sure arsenal wake up... samir nasri least get the chance to send superb asisstfor arshavin, super sub in this match.. everyone in emirates smile and yel for arsenal... what about the second leg prediction?? i think barceloba still had a chance...they only need 1 goals to win... so arsenal must work hard...they will play in nou camp, barca home but today, i must say, congratulations for you arsenal

Totally wrong I'm a Manchester Untied fan so there's no bias from me but I see your point Barcelona appear stronger my main point though is that it's not a walk over game for Barcelona they have to out play Arsenal or at least hope for an Arsenal mistake. Messi is brilliant but if he doesn't show up then they need Xavi. Dani Alves is a decent player eh is good at going forward but I've never once seen him do too much damage to the opposition Maicon is far better attacking right back. Also don't forget having an attacking right back is all well and good but he leaves space for players to take advantage of. David Villa is always going to put a few of his chances away and to be honest should be Arsenal's biggest worry.

What a result for Arsenal? More than anything just the confidence of playing against the best in business and then coming back to beat them, will do Arsenal a world of good. I think Barcelona was in cruise control for most of the match barring the starting 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes. Arsenal started the match very well, but once Barcelona started gaining more and more possession, the shades of last year stated coming. Then the sucker blow when Villa scored on the counter and it was beginning to look similar to last year. But like last year at Emirates, Arsenal had a whip lash left for the last 15 minutes and two good goals in next to nothing makes North London the most happy zone of the two days of Champions League this week. Cheers! Ram

If you go by recent history, i.e. the last five years, then your comment is apt. Year after year, Arsenal has reached this stage and the experts keep gushing they are alive in all competitions and this is going to be the year. And then all hell breaks loose and they end up slipping in all. This year though there is one teeny weeny difference, they have actually made the final of a Cup competition and all the teams in the league this season have been having topsy turvy form. Let's see how this year spans out for Arsenal. Cheers! Ram

Such a good result for Arsenal I totally agree about the confidence boost about coming from behind. David Villa's goal was clinical but do you think Arsenal will hold on? I myself can see them slipping up. I can't wait for the return leg at Camp Nou now should be good.

I'm a neutral for the game so I generally just want a good match so I hope for some entertainment at least and hope Arsenal don't set out to be defensive which their play really doesn't suit so I hope both teams play their natural games.

What a great game that was. I was posting status updates on my Facebook during the game and the latest one was about Arsenal not believing the hype about Barcelona. Yes they are undoubtedly a great side but so are Arsenal and other teams.

Exactly nothings impossible like so Arsenals comeback isn't a major surprise to me whilst it may shock some others I'm happy they came back and this sets up a nice second leg I think anyway as Barcelona have to come out and attack.
17 Feb 11
I was thinking that Barcelona would need to push for a second when it was looking like Arsenal could score. A 2-0 Lead is much better than a 1-0 lead especially if Arsenal went and scored an away goal at Nou Camp.
17 Feb 11
Yeah that's true but one away goal is always a good advantage and always offers a morale boost going into a home game. Arsenal though aren't through yet I could see Barcelona making a come back.

I think that Barcelona was the better team, but because Messi was very egoistic, they didn't ended the game earlier. There were three or four opportunities where Messi should have passed the ball, but instead he tried to score, even if it was very difficult. Messi passes the ball only when he is far away from the opposing goal, but when he gets close, he doesn't see any of his teammates. And because he is praised when he plays good, now he deserves to be criticized, because he has put his interest of scoring in front of the team's winning interest. As for the second leg, I am convinced that Barcelona will win it comfortably and will qualify, but if they don't, then hats off to Wenger.

Great players are those who are capable of putting themselves 120% to the team's service. He didn't against Arsenal, he wanted to score, not caring that the game is not ended yet. Players like Messi and Ronaldo score so much because they don't pass the ball when they see the goal. Maybe if they would pass more, their teams wouldn't loose any points and the team would score more. But hey, the majority of people want to see dribbles and skills, they don't see that the team has to score as many goal as it is possible, not mattering who the scorer is.
17 Feb 11
I'm not sure about your analysis of Messi yea he may not have lit up the game but many players do and they don't always get criticised also when you've scored over 40 goals so far your head is going to be in a shooting mode and I bet the manager has been encouraging him to shoot when you've scored so many goals you expect every shot to turn to gold. I do believe Barcelona will come back though as well but it wouldn't just be hats off to Wenger it would be down to the whole squad as it's their efforts as a whole which show on and off the pitch.
18 Feb 11
If your in goal scoring form though any decent manager will tell players to take every chance to score Fergie did it with Ronaldo and Rooney. Messi is no different if your scoring then your confidence carries your belief of scoring every time you take a shot. There are not as many players around who give 100% for the team in today's game. Carlos Tevez and Park do such things but not many players put themselves about as much as they do and still manage to score quite a few goals. Tevez has become more selfish at Manchester City and ultimately they've had more success as more goals from him equals more points.

Barcelona played very well throughout the first half going well above the arsenal, the game followed the same half of the second time, but Pep Guardiola he committed a big mistake to take the only scored of the game and the Barcelona ran out front, and defended. Big mistake when yo´re playing defense for a visit, the champions ligue and against a big team like Arsenal, I think thank´s to Guardiola lose the game Barcelona......

difference on opinions, because David Villa never plays well he is only to scores goals in the ligue, messi played well but had no chance of scoring like Xavi Iniesta or Alves, please one of the most important attributes of Barcelona is that does not played defense, always wants more goals and that did not show today...
16 Feb 11
I'm not sure I agree with your view although Barcelona had most of the procession both teams were equal throughout in terms of chances and attacking game play in general. Barcelona probably deserved to win but at the end of the day it's the team who takes their chances who wins. David Villa whilst he scored who did very little else so blaming Guardiola is completely wrong I can clearly see his thinking in taking of Villa for a more defensive player one away goal was all they needed yes the game may have back fired but David Villa wasn't a stand out performer tonight.
17 Feb 11
Villa never plays well technically scoring a number of goals is playing well also getting into goalscoring positions is playing well and Villa only ever got into the right area once. Messi had a quite a few chances to take an effort at goal his performance was good though despite failing to score as who worked himself into good areas.

It was a quite good game. In the first 15 minutes Arsenal has a lot of chances, but then Barca got better and better. Around the 75th minute I think Arsenal got the match, ans scored 2 goals in 5 minutes, so it was pretty amazing. I think Robin's goal was the best (didn't saw arshavin's), and it just shows how important he is for Arsenal. It was important for Arsenal to win, because it gives them a lot of confidence, and it's important for the league, but also for the next match in Barcelona. Best of luck to Arsenal.

I think Arshavin's goal was quite nice actually after I have seen it, but evend though Arsenal has a 2-1 lead, then nothing is sure. Barcelona beat them last year 4-1 at camp nou, and if Messi hits the day again, he will execute them.
17 Feb 11
Yeah I bet all that will be in a few of the Arsenal players heads the question now is whether Arsenal will stand up and be equal to Barcelona in the second leg or will they completely fall apart whatever the case I'm hoping for another entertaining game.
16 Feb 11
Robin's goal was pretty good but Arsenals goal was just a classic a Barcelona counter attack for me which was beautifully executed. Arshavins finish wasn't the best in the world but for all round team play it was pretty nice. The victory will certainly give them a lot of confidence but will they stand up in the second leg that's the main thing for me or will they throw their lead away.

It was a great night for Arsenal. After a goal down they show that they can compete with the best and beat Barcelona. There are few things I have to disagree with you. 1. Messi goal was offside. It is not legimate. It was a clear offside. 2. The counter attack is not a classic Barcelona attack. Arsenal have been reowned for their quick counter attack during the time of Ian Wright, Nicholas Anelka & Thierry Henry. Against Wolves Arsenal show how they can turn defense into attack in a split second. For the second leg, I predict Arsenal will win this game by 1 goal.
18 Feb 11
Definitely a great night for Arsenal but the Messi goal was surely no clear offside both players were in line with each other which results in the goal being legitimate. The counter attack is also another point where your failing to see what I mean as I mean the counter attack is something Barcelona would be proud of I do know Arsenal have been known for a quick counter attack but Barcelona have been doing such a thing for far longer than Arsenal have which is why I called it a classic Barcelona counter attack. The second leg shall be interesting but I see Barcelona still taking victory.

It was a spectacular game that even a person not fascinated by football must have enjoyed. Both teams attacked and the ball was passed from one end to another. The game was played in good spirits and there were no bad tackles. As long as such games are played, people will keep supporting classic football. Arsenal deserved their win as they took the game to Barcelona when Villa was substituted. It will be difficult for them at Nou Camp though where Barca has already thrashed Real 5-0. Still, this victory will lift the motivation and confidence of the Gunners and will shape up their rest of the season.

The second leg is going to be exciting. Arsenal have to defend well to cope with Messi and Villa partnership. Barca have problems in defence with Pique out and Puyol still a doubt.
17 Feb 11
Yeah a good game with Arsenal getting a brilliant result but like you say Barcelona have already shown what they can do against teams such as Real Madrid so there's no point in getting over excited but they certainly have a good lead going into the second leg which can only offer them a morale boost. The second leg is well set up now.
16 Feb 11
Well one thing I dont go for those teams and ofcourse am not watch thoose tems. Sencond of all I will watch them games but I gotta be on my son all day. But I would think that those are good teams.

I'm no lover of arsenal, but today I was reason, to eliminate one bigger enemy. its a 'man u fan' tactic and am sure if we will meet with arsenal, it will be a walk over.i just hope tonight wasn't a replay of last year.

As a Manchester United fan I remember the display we put on at The Emirates in the Semi Finals against Arsenal. It was one of the best displays I have ever seen in away performances in the Champions League.
17 Feb 11
Yeah you can point to specific games but in recent times over a number of games Manchester united have struggled to record victories over the bigger English sides. This season though we've got a good record so meeting Arsenal may not be so bad but still I'd rather take on a Barcelona as it always sounds better if you've beaten a team of their quality to go on and win the champions league.
16 Feb 11
I'm a Manchester United fan myself but I'd prefer to face Barcelona the bigger teams are the teams you want to face and facing Arsenal I think United would struggle they usually struggle against the top English teams. I'm glad Arsenal got a victory though was a good game. Second leg is set up nicely though.

In my opinion, arsenal is a kinda young team only some of the players are about 25-28s so when they played in their home probably the youthful urge their brave and passion to win the game against Barcelona. They can easily lost their head during the game so Arsenal better watch out when they face Barca again :D
19 Feb 11
Your right in a sense they have a youthful squad but maybe not as young as some think as they've always been labelled as a young team for years now so whilst still young there are not all that young any more. Your totally right about the team not dropping their heads which would be quite easy to do against a team of Barcelonas quality. Bring on the second leg for some more entertainment.
