Oh he's following me

Have you ever been shopping and noticed that the security people are following you thinking you'll steal something? I did last week and I dont know why they were following me as Ive never robbed anything in a store before and Im not about to start now. I was in the cosmetics department trying to find the right shade of blush and I couldnt find the precise color I was looking for. I had some that I thought were close to the color I wanted and kept going from stand to stand checking them out. I must have been there for over 20 minutes when finally I just wanted to scream. I then started looking around trying to find a saleswoman to help me and take me out of my misery when I noticed this man standing there and he wasnt dressed warm....so I knew he was security. So I went to him and asked him to find me a saleswoman to help me pick the color. He said he was a customer and I told him he must be very desperate because he was standing in front of the fake nails. He blushed and said he'd find me someone to help me. Have you ever noticed you were being followed by the security while shopping?

Sorry, but I kind of like it when you outsmarted him there. I never noticed a security guy following me in a mall, but I was often followed by the sales girls. At one time, I told her to stay put and I will get her when I've done choosing.

It was fun to make him blush haha!! Oh I know about sales girl. Sometimes its convenient but at other times, its as if they are circling and zooming in on you to make you buy BUY BUY!! I like how you tell them to stay put and you'll get them if you need them.....I'll use that! Thanks!

I think you were very polite in telling her exactly what was going on. I too feel uncomfortable looking at stuff and being followed. I always feel like telling them " do you want to sell your stuff or not?" We have to look and be able to look and touch in order to buy!! You did great!!

Oh, I told her: "I am just looking around to see if there is anything that I like, once I know I will tell you. Don't follow me around, I am not going to steal anything." I was never known for being polite, I just say what I want to say.

"standing in front of the fake nails" haha! No wonder he blushed lol. I'm not very observant when I'm in shops but I do find it frustrating when I can't find what I want and get all hot and flustered! All these make-up counters look the same don't they?

That's a good point! Put it this way, I wouldn't be able to do that job..I'd be saying, "Oooh, I must buy that!" and not concentrating on what I should be concentrating on lol.

Right, how can you spend all your days in a store and NOT buy a thing. I think thats why there are no women doing this. Id go bananas with all the sales lol. We're lucky we're not doing it.....we'd be broke by now HA!!!

They sure look all the same and I hate shopping to begin with, so I want to go in and out ASAP. I dont usually notice people around me but when you're standing in the make up aisle and trying to find things and this bozo is in the way, you cant help notice him haha. Im so happy I could make him blush, idiot!! Thing is, Ive never seen any WOMEN doing this type of work. Is it because women are better at it so you dont "see" them or is it because we just couldnt spend a whole day walking around in a store and not being able to buy anything HAHA!! Thanks!

If they have followed me, I have not noticed. I had to laugh at the fact that he was standing in front of the nails. I have had people randomly come up to me and ask me to help them with their shopping, though, and that was a little bit weird. I have helped an elderly man buy makeup for his wife with Alzheimers (he had left her outside in a running motor home--yikes) and then a woman wanted to know what Vitamin D was and why her doctor wanted her to take it. I am not a store employee, and have not worked in a store for over twenty years. My brother used to say I had a kind of presence that made me look helpful. I wonder if you have a certain presence that makes you look like you should be followed.

Sorry you're being asked for help all the time. I used to work in a L*quor store and when Id go to people and ask them if they needed help, most would be surprised I was working there!?!? I believe I might have this look about me as you say GG Thank you!

he might not be following you perse but these people have to look inconspicous so they check everyone who stands over something a long time. they have to always be on their guard. (i worked at a big retail store once and was told this).

I know they have to follow people and check them out but while he was intent on checking ME out and I wasnt going to steal anything, he was wasting his time. Im told that security employees can sort of "read" people and know if someone will take something or not. Maybe he was new to this lol. Since you worked in a big retail store, do you think they would follow someone just to "pretend" their working??

Hi. MagicalBubbles. You got him good!!! My irritation is when I would walk in the store and the cashier will get on the intercom and say, "Security Cameras please monitor all aisles." Ohh, that makes me so mad. It makes me feel like they think that I am about to steal something! I just walked into the store. I hope that they don't think that I am a thief, they must have me mistaken for someone else! I know that this is the procedure for watching the store, but why do they have to wait until I enter the store before they say something like this? If this man was a customer as he said, then why is he staring you down like he was a security guard? I am so glad that you put him in his place!

Not lately, but back in the day, most definitely. Just like cops would follow me when I was just driving to the store or driving home from a friend's. You must look suspicious!!! LOL. I've been caught shoplifting before (many many years ago, as a kid) and so I am always kind of aware of security at all times, I don't know why. Force of habit, I guess. lol. It wouldn't annoy me too much I guess, as I know I'm not doing anything wrong.

I guess I must look suspicious as you say lol. I know about cops following though because it happened to me before. Turned out that they wanted to know about everybody in the area. I live in a small town, so they can "know" everybody.

Oh yes it has happened to me before and it is quite uncomfortable, if they continue to follow me, I would in fact look at them and say, you know following me is defeating your duties here. They normally do not get my point and walk away. Surely they must know that I am pointing out that while they are following an honest customer a true thief is getting away with the store. If it has gotten to be way to much I leave as I find it disrespectful.

Its really annoying. I try not to let it get to me because I know they're doing a job, but you're right, while they follow me, others are leaving with stuff. Nice thing is, he's not following me anymore haha! Thanks!

I have never been followed by security while shopping. If i had, i would confront him and ask why he is following me. I don't want to be harassed and embarrassed like that so i deal with it early on.

It didnt really embarrass me, it was just annoying because I needed help and he was right there, working for the store, so why not try and find someone to help me instead of sneak up on me like this. Thanks!

YES!!!!!!! MANY TIMES!!! it's soooo annoying and kind of scary/creepy. I don't know why a person would do that though cuz i mean seriously, it's wierd, sometimes pervish, and just plain creepy. Maybe some people just like that kind of stuff. But i don't think the people they do it to, like it as much as they do. Or maybe they get an adrenaline rush from it? Who knows... All i'm saying is that that's just a lil too creepy.

Well its annoying but not creepy to me because its their job. Im talking about security people working in stores to follow robbers and stop them. But sometimes they follow the wrong people = me!! Next time it happens to you, remember that they're doing a job, they're not perverts hehe.......but they could be, depends WHERE you are when its happening! Thanks!!

That happened to me and a friend once! These two security guards were following us, thinking we'd stolen an eyeliner when actually my friend was going to pay for it then decided she didn't want it so she just put it down in a different isle and then left! The security guards came after us after we left the shop and we had to go back in and prove that we'd put the eyeliner somewhere else ha!

I think we all do that at times, dont we? I used to have the bad habit of putting the things I wanted to buy in my pockets because I couldnt hold it all in my hands. I know that must have made them itch and follow me until Id get to the cash and pay for it all. Sorry they didnt see you put the eyeliner back though. They did half their job haha! Thanks!
