Too Afraid to Fly!

I really want to travel the world. See all that there is to see. I just have one problem and a big one at that. I have a major fear of flying. I've flown 4 times though out my life. The very first time, I can't remember much, the other 3 definitely. I get really bad anxiety when it comes to flying. I don't know how to over come that. The times that I've flown, it was not for leisure. I had to. The moment I get on the plane and my hand will be tightly clinging on to my husband really tight during take off and landing. These two are what I fear the most. Once in the air, I'm fine. Anyone has any advice? I always joke with my husband, give me a sleeping pill and while I'm out of it, put me in the plane(that would be the only way to visit other countries). I dream of one day visit Europe, but just thinking about the flight distance and there goes my dream... Help!!

I too have a great dream to round the world, see the world wonderful places. You are afraid to fly, I afraid to swim. I know swimming, although i afraid to water. If i went to swimming i feel somewhat fearful. It is because of in my childwood, someone dropped into the water, that is fixed in my mind. So i afraid to water. Europe there are many good places to see: http://www.squidoo.com/seeeurope http://allwomenstalk.com/17-most-amazing-places-to-visit-in-europe/

We can dream to travel together then? You at least know how to swim. I jokingly tell my kids, I could swim, but only underwater, which is the truth. I could swim, but not with my head above water and I have to stay within 5 ft of water. Anything above that and I will drown. If I were ever to go on a cruise, which I want to do as well, I will need to bring my own flotation devices (like inflatable boat, life vest, and wet suit). So Sad:( Ok.. I need to get over it:)

I cant help but I want to share there's not only you afraid to fly, a lot of people they do too. Like me, I'm a heart attack. Just imagine you are falling down from a real high of building or abyss or something, it's really really terrible. The first time I was on an airplane, I was very afraid. I worried if an airplane stuck in the trouble so I have to parachuted, no way I'd rather sitting in an airplane and die lol

Flying or fear of heights is just the same. If you really want that then conquer your fear in order for you to accomplish your dream. Just pray when you're taking a flight, or just sleep though throughout your flight that would be a cinch.

The thing is, I want to visit and see other places. I literally have not been out of the continental united states. I love my country, but would love to visit the rest of the world too. One of the other member suggest by ship.. Well, that's not much help since I can't swim. (titanic)... If I must, I will get on that plane, but not without mental struggle...

Psychologists would say that if possible you try to identify the source of your fear. Something might have happened to you in the past which could have generated your fear of flying. Also, the saying 'Face your Fear' is recommended by behaviorists. It means that you shouldn't avoid doing what you fear. Confronting it is very important because if you do not, then the fear remains. It is good that you have someone to accompany you during your flights so that there is someone that can assure you that everything will be fine. It's like the principle of classical conditioning applied to fears. Often, we have phobia about something because we fear that something bad might happen. However, if we continue to be in the situation which we have a phobia about and do not encounter any unpleasant things, then the fear may be eliminated.

Aw, that's a pity. Plane rides are really great especially when you take day flights. When you're up in the sky, you sort of have this peaceful feeling. Besides, planes would take you faster to your destination. But phobias are really hard to overcome. Have you consulted a specialist to address your aviophobia? Or maybe you can travel by boat. Wouldn't that be possible?

There are so many people in the world that share your fear of flying. In order to conquer fear, it has to be faced. Until there is the ability to get past that fear and put it behind us, it will always be there.
