One dangerous place - a doctor's clinic

I brought my son to the doctor this morning. He's had a fever for two days. The doctor said it was viral and prescribed some medicines. But waiting for our turn with other sick people, I realized that these people might be carrying one form of virus or another. And we were sitting amongst them. A person sneezing in front of you, someone coughing beside you, a person having the chills walking past you... There were lots of sick people. Worse, the place is a medical center with different doctor's clinics in one building. Ironic that a place you go to to get better may also be a place to get sick.

Hiya beamer, Glad you Son is better already. Things we have to put up with really I suppose when we go to those kind of places. Although there are infections going around if we are healthy enough I don´t think that we will pick them up anyway. There is chance that we might but on the whole no. Even though we think that we might catch something else. It has never really bothered me in that sense and I was always in the Doctors Surgery with my Sons one in particular at least twice a week. Also I had to make trips to the Hospital because he had Asthma too. Don´t let it worry you too much. Hope you are all well have a great Weekend.

Thanks, lovinangelsinstead21. (Boy, that's a mouthful :) No, I don't really worry about it so much. I was just a little amused at the irony of it all. But as much as possible, I'd refrain from taking my son to the hospital to visit relatives :)

Oh, that's something new for me. Hospitals in my country aren't too strict about those things.

Hiya beamer, Yes it is is´nt it. I did want to shorten it but then I found that I could´nt so I had to leave it like that but I like it. You can shorten if you want I don´t mind at all. Yes taking Children to see Relatives in Hospital is something to be avoided as much as possible. Here for example Children are not allowed into the Rooms at all. They have to stay downstairs in the Hallway. It´s for the Children and the Person who might be ill´s sake really.

yah you are right about the risk of acquiring diseases in the Hospital/clinic that is why there is so called Nosocomial/ hospital acquired infection which is a very common infection that the patients might have in the hospital especially those client who stayed long in the hospital.,, but the best thing to do is to be aware on how does diseases be transmitted and knowing those things might help you on how to avoid having those diseases like for example most of the respiratory diseases can be acquire by droplets (airborne) and some diseases are can be acquire if you have open wound or if you are expose on any body fluids of from any sick person like blood, saliva, sputum. etc. so always protect your self with the use of sanitizer frequent hand-washing and if you will be stayed on a hospital better have a disposable face mask.. but also consider that anywhere and anytime you could be expose to diseases so always protect your self and be healthy to have strong immune system..^_^

Those are great pieces of advice. People do indeed have to know how particular diseases are acquired. And you are correct. We can always get them anywhere, not only in hospitals and clinics so it's really best to always boost our immune system. Thanks, coldfire0430.

Yes they can be very dangerous just as hospitals are, many people pick up infections from hospitals, you would think hospitals would be the best place to be protected....

Oh, definitely. I don't even bring my son if we need to visit a relative confined in the hospital.

I never thought of it that way...you're right. I hardly ever go to the doctor, maybe once a year. Maybe that's why I'm healthy

Maybe you're right about that :) I go to the doctor when the over-the-counter medicine I buy don't work anymore.

hi beamer, hope your son is well now or gets well soon. Anyway my suggestion would be let us bring our children or go to an expensive clinic whenever we can afford to, why? because high end clinics have better doctors, better and disinfected more often, less people so possibility of getting other infections is reduced, and if possible a specialized pedia clinic to eliminate the possibility of contact with adults who are also ill. I am not discounting public hospitals in our country or public health centers, they also have good and qualified doctors and cost next to nothing but we all know how they are maintained (not all but most of them), so go there only as a last resort or if you have financial restraints Now whether public or private, we also have to take our own precaution when getting a check up, bring along your own disinfectant or hand sanitizer, handkerchief or face mask and avoid touching the premises like walls or that pew where we sit to wait. I agree with you that the doctor's clinic is a dangerous place, but it's lesser evil over evil because it's worst if we don't bring a sick individual there. Good luck and again hope your son is well

Oh, we definitely bring our own sanitizers even if all the hallways of the medical center has a dispenser. But you're right, high-end clinics have better facilities and better sanitation protocols than public ones. But all the high-end clinics I know aren't stand-alone clinics. They're part of the hospital facility. The stand-alone ones are small clinics. But you're advice is great, and we've been doing that actually. When it comes to my son's health, we try to give him the best there is here in Manila.

So the next time you visit a doctor's clinic or a hospital, avoid touching anything. You'll never know what kind of virus lurks on those railings or even the elevator buttons :)

I have to take my son to the doctor for checkups on several different things, and I hate it. Every time we do, one of us is sick within a day or two. Usually me, as he is in a wheelchair and doesn't have to sit in the chairs in the waiting room that the sick ones already have. I hate going.

I got sick a day after I took my son to the doctor. Guess my immune system was at its low due to long nights of work.

You are right! I know a lot of times people go into the hospital to get better and then they wind up with an infection that doesn't respond to antibiotics. Hospitals and clinics are not good places if you have to be around a lot of sick people. Thanks for sharing!

That is why we hate to go to these kinds of places. Speaking of such, we'll be taking our son to the government clinic which is just next to us for his routine check up since they need to measure his weight & all that stuff!~Oh well, we can only pray & trust God for His protection

Yes, it is. Just had to go more frequent because he isn't gaining much weight since the last time. In fact 2 months back he lost weight but his height & head circumference are steadily increasing although still slightly below the normal BMIBut not too much to worry since he's healthy & super active, haha!~

It is true. When I bring my son in to the Clinic for check ups, I worry that he could get the germs at the clinic, I definitely don't want him to go in healthy and leaving sick... I can see the kids and the teenage sneezing, coughing all over the place...

Actually, it isn't bad. We have some of the great hospitals here. But even the best hospitals or the best doctor's clinics have sick people carrying all sorts of virus and other diseases which can infect the other people who are also consulting with the doctor. Thanks, my son's a bit all right now.

If a child is there in our home means, automatically we have to arrange some small medical store in our room.

The place is not safe instead of getting better you might enter the critical stage. I hope they have to improve their facilities.

I hope so too. Better facilities may really help minimize the spread of virus in doctor's waiting rooms.

hi beamer, i actually don't like hospitals because i know how dirty the place is even the air we breathe when we are inside are dirty. but well what can i do, i studied nursing and hopefully i can pass my board exam which i will be taking soon so i can finally be a nurse hehehe. i know what you mean because i also hate the fact that the clinic of my nephew's doctor is just in front of the pulmonary section and people who go there have pulmonary problems like tuberculosis, asthma, cough and all that. instead of getting better, they make each other get worse heheheh i never go to bed nor sit on my bed when i get home from the hospital, even when i was in college. after 12 hours of duty, i still take a shower and my room mates would tell me that i was already trying to kill myself. but i rest for like 30 minutes after i take off my uniform (which i separate from all the other laundry). it would be worse if i don't take a shower, i wont only get myself sick but also my room mates right? so it's better be safe than sorry. prevention is always better than cure hehhee i am glad your son is okay now. kids are so prone to infections, since they don't really know much about aseptic techniques yet. we should just always tell them to wash their hands and take a shower everyday oh and when i went to manila, i was amazed to see how clean this hospital we went to. well, way better than our hospitals here hehehe take care beamer and sorry for the very long response

So I gather you're in the medical profession? Hmm, even that is a dangerous job. You're nearer to diseases :) It's good that one of our hospitals here that you went to was clean enough. You should have PM me that you were going. I would've showed you around :)

That's true, that's why if you will notice there are different wards in hospital. Medical, Surgical, OB, Pediatric,.. that's the setting of all hospitals to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

You're right. Still, before you reach those wards, you usually pass through a common entrance where you may bump into someone carrying an infectious disease or something :) Hi. Welcome to myLot.

You are very right. That is why it is good to go home, wash your hands, maybe brush your teeth, and even, possibly change clothes if it was very crowded there. Even worse is to have to go to the Emergency room. I have had jobs that involved me taking people to the emergency room and to the doctors. It seemed like I always got sick when I did so.

Yes, we usually do that. It's actually a good hygienic practice. Although my wife always tease me that I'm a borderline hypochondriac.

Oh Yes, I have learned about this recently because my poor mother-in-law had to visit the doctor because she has a serious heart condition and needs to get check-ups and medication on a regular basis. Well, she has caught a very bad cold even though she has had a -flu shot. Make me think that I am glad I didn't bother to have a flu shot as it causes more problem than help for me. _Derek

Hi. beamer88. At Doctor's Care many of the patients that were waiting to see the doctor, was wearing a blue greenish mask over their nose and face. I wonder why they don't have these at the doctor's clinic that you have went to with your son. They were wearing one when I was not feeling well one day. Germs are everywhere. It is contagious. They should order non-surgical masks to wear to keep from themselves being exposed to germs, even when they are sick or not. Schools may need to start wearing these too. It is so many nasty germs here. My kids have been sick like crazy. I know that most of the germs that they have picked up have came from school and from the air as well.

Yes, I do see the irony in the whole point being made here. But there really is no other place that you can go to get medical advice. So I would just deal with it and go to the clinic to have a doctor check me out if I was really sick and needed to get better. I would visit a clinic if I had a fever for a long while and there was nothing I could do to make myself better.

Oh yes I have wondered this also as I could not help but think about virus floating in the air. Wouldn't it be best if they can give us an appointment and see us right away so that we do not infect others and others do not infect us. But what can we do because the doctors sometimes run behind as some people need more examination time. I do hope your son feels better.

We had an appointment, actually, and we try to come in just a few minutes before our appointed time just to minimize exposure to other sick people. My son'e better. Thanks. Now, I'm the one who got the flu.
