Dealing with doctors

I was thinking that in Romania, you have to bribe doctors for better service ( i am talking about public health system) and for them to be more careful. For my incarnated nail at my foot toe I contributed with about 32$. My girlfriend is going into operation tomorrow, and her mother had to pay the anaesthetist, the surgent that's going to perform the operation and the nurse - again, for better service. Now you hear doctors complaining about salaries and stuff especially here, and i can sympathise with them, especially when it comes to family doctors, which don't receive bribes, but i wonder why do those that make so much extra complain ? Now i have another question for people all around the world - How do you deal with doctors in your area ? Do you have to bribe them for better service ?

That is terrible. No matter what their salary is they are employed to do the best that they can. It is entirely unprofessional not to do so and the doctors governing body in Romania needs to grip the problem. In the UK we have a wide variety of doctors but I have yet to hear of one being bribed to do his job. My doctors are excellent. They have just the right balance between concern and not being too gloomy. One slapped my stomach and said "lose it"! We both knew what he meant and I am busy working on his demand. I hope that all goes well with your girlfriend and that she feels much better afterwards.

Hello pikey, As i expected from developed countries, you just confirmed it for me :). I am indeed worried about Anca (my gf) but i am trying to keep myself busy about it (she is having the operation in another city, so i will have to wait for her mother's call in about 19-20 hours from now).

I have never heard of bribing a doctor for better service and that would be so horrible having to do that. I dont know what i would do or say to the doctor for better service. I cant believe you and others around the world have to do this and i feel so awful that you have to do something like this. I never have to bribe a doctor for better service. If i go to the doctor i am going for a reason and they better figure out how to solve it and get it done and in fact they always do and always seem to be very nice and helpful to me. I always walk away with some medicine or something to solve my problem i am having.

Hello lologirl. Well from the US answers that i got here (you and dragon) and also the one from the rest of the people I seam to learn that were doctors are already paid well, or a well established justice system is in place, you don't have to bribe them (not too often anyway). How are doctors paid in the US ? compared to the salaries and costs in your country of course

I guess the situation is quite the same in any other country. Normally out of 10 doctors, only 1 or 2 are doctors that really care about each and every patient they see but the remaining number of doctors are those that rush through each appointment unless they are offered more $$$. I seldom get sick so going to the doctor is a "once in a blue moon" sort of thing, but I normally wouldn't bribe them for better service. I think bribing them wouldn't be an ideal situation because this will only feed their hunger for more $$$ and other patients who are not able to offer them this extra $$$ will be at a disadvantage. I guess it is up to us to really source for doctors who are concerned about their patients' health, or maybe it is just up to luck to meet such a doctor.......

Hello Gerald. I see Australia on your profile. Well yes i am sure some (very few) doctors can be pasionate about their work, but i think it depends also on the country / salary they are in. They do have pretty lousy salaries in countries like Romania / India, but pretty good ones in Germany or England like my friend astonish mentioned.

That's horrible!! Over here in the US we just pay the doctor's fees and if they are guilty of neglect or do a poor job we can sue them. That is incentive for them to do their best. $32 isn't bad for having your toe taken care of. Here, a doctor's office call charge is around $75 and that's just to walk in the door! It's high because of the malpractice insurance they have to carry because people sue them so frequently for stupid things--like, they don't like the shape of their scar after surgery or they get an infection that the doctor had nothing to do with, etc. There are legitimate lawsuits but people sue for stupid reasons and win so costs are very, very high.

Hello my dear dragon. Take into account that i paid those money only as BRIBE - i am student and i have free service from the public health system - so i should have had that service for free, but then again, i do want the doctor do be nice about it and bribing him seams to do just that..

In Australia we never have to bribe anyone from the medical profession because visiting a doctor is expensive enough! We have a good government health system but it is overloaded so the gaps patients have to pay can sometimes be steep especially if people cannot afford private health insurance which is thousands of dollars a year for top coverage! Bribing sounds terrible, fancy having to do that just to get better service! I hope your girlfriend is doing well and will be back to her usual self really soon.

I am from Bangladesh & i am going to be a doctor. but it is not matter about your complain against doctor because it is universal but nature of complaints are just different. Somewhere it is about bribe as you wrote, somewhere about taking increase charge, someone talking about their lacking of skill,so on. Al of the complaints are actually not true. Every doctor are dedicated for human welbeing and people are compelled to go to a doctor. So doctor-patient relationship should be more strong because it is not possible to avoid a doctor by a people or a doctor can't go without patient. In Bangladesh, doctors are giving service but problem is the limitation of resource as it is yet developing country. But doctor from here are skill enough. There are good reason behind this. Unlike developed country, patient are poor and readily available & we the student are getting more chance to examine patient & gathering experience. The good news for us that as out system of learning is good, so student of our neighbor such as India , Pakistan, Nepal, Srilanka are coming here. But there are real problem in our country is, there are skill doctors but not enough for serving this huge population. So the poor people are getting less service, it is not for bribe system, it is for there are lacking of government hospital, rather there are "high paying hospital" for the reach people, which is unreachable by poor. this the bad things here. But i personally want to do somethings for the poor people.

Personally even here in the US unless you have an excellent Medical plan or have the $$ to pay outright for services rendered, many times, the treatments you get is truly not worth it's weight. Many times you have to learn to be proactive and stay focused and learn to find a doctor willing to help work with and listen to you. Personally I feel all over the doctors have forgot why they ever wanted to become a doctor to help others,

No, In Indonesia we don't have to bribe the doctors or the nurse, but we do have to seek other doctor's opinion on a health matter before we are sure of our diagnosis. I am sorry to say that many of the doctors do not have the qualification as in their titles, so we have to ask around who is the best doctor with a certain health case or as several before we are convince of our diagnosis.

That's so sad. Health care is very important so it's a pity and disgust that doctors have to be bribed for them offer good services. I believe that doctors swore to save lives to the best of their abilities, and this bribery act is telling the opposite. Based on my experiences, I haven't dealt with a doctor and other medical professionals who have to be bribed. Of course, there are those who have higher professional fees than the others, but this is already expected of them. I just had a surgery and my doctor even asked me to use my government health insurance. A fellow doctor (who has another specialization) recommended that that surgeon because he has lower fee than another surgeon. Doctors in my country are generally kind and good-natured. They know how to value their clients.
