Do you think Avatar is overrated?

I remember wanting to watch Avatar thinking it was going to be super fantastic like everybody was hyping it up to be. Everyone was saying how great it was and so I went with some friends and I didn't get what was so great about it; to me it was all great eye candy. I like the movie, I just don't think it is the greatest one of all time (I even thought the big fight scene was kinda boring). Everybody has their opinion, but I was just wondering if anyone else liked Avatar and what YOU think the best movie is. I like some old movies like Armageddon and Rush Hour, and I also recently re-watched the Harry Potter series and realized how great it is!(my now favourite series).

Hi Ray, I've seen Avatar once by buying a DVD copy of it. Just that, only once. Some movies are worth viewing over and over again, the disk getting scratched in the process. That's what I did to Keanu Reeves' The Matrix and the Star Wars Series of George Lucas. The Avatar DVD has been gathering dust on its rack, still shiny as the day I viewed it. If somebody could trade it for some Discovery Channel videos, it would be more exciting.

Yes Star Wars Phantom Menace, Armageddon, Independence Day, and The Matrix I watched over and over on VHS lol I like the Discovery Channel stuff, but I mostly watch NOVA because I don't have DC lol

I guess, i have a simple standard when it comes to movies. Though i take into consideration how hi-tech it may be, i still consider if it entertained me so much. My husband and i watched Avatar at our DVD player. I liked it so much but my husband said it's just so-so to him. For me, i like those when they were in the forest and when they become Avatars. However, for me i like the 3 movies of the Lord of the Rings more, though.

I like LOTR too, I actually keep forgetting to make time to re-watch the second and third. It's hard for me to remember what happens in which movie lol (like the elephants in the battle scene; I don't remember if that was the second or third haha)

I hate that about moviegoing, when you believe the hype and go along prepared to be blown away, but then find your expectations have been set unrealistically high, and you end up disappointed when it doesn't come up to the expectations..As for Me,going along with others and taking others to see it,I've gone 5x and now have the DVD....

Usually for me, if its getting high expectations, it's usually nothing special (unless it is a comedy). One movie I did like though that had high expectations was Inception, I've watched it twice and bought the blu-ray :P

I thought Avatar this movie got so high rating then this movie must be worth a watch. We didn't go into the theatre, we waited for the DVD to come out. My hsuband and i both don't think it is that that good. It wasn't particularly special... Good thing we didn't buy ticket to watch inthe cinema.

I think the term 'overrated' is overrated. I mean... just cause you think a franchise isn't all that doesn't mean it really isn't all that. Don't get me wrong... I was about as sub-parr on Avatar as you were. I wasn't thrilled about it. But I know how hurtful it is to hear someone call your favorite things 'overrated'. I hear that term tossed around about the Lord of the Rings movies (MY FAVORITE FILMS OF ALL TIME) and let me tell you... it isn't nice to hear someone talk down to your favorite movies like they're the final say about these things. Especially if you are one of those people who really thinks the movies are "all that".

I think s, just a bit...I watched it since many people said it was awesome, even though the dvd I got had crappy quality I still watched the entire 2 hour movie. And I wasn't disappointed at all, I loved the movie, the effects, acting, dialogue and story.. But it did have depth and all that awards.

hey,Raymond. i have to say i like avatar very much. maybe it's not the best in all of the movies. ignore the old ones,if you review the movies these two year, you will find there are few fantastic movies like this. i have went to the cinema many times for watching some movies like toy story, the chronicles of narnie, twilight and some local movies. none of them can be compared to Avatar! among these, Avatar is worthy of the tickets.

I would say Avatar is one of the greatest movie in 2010. I like the story. A lot of movie story are saying that earth was attacted by alien but for Avatar, human become alien that attact other planet. Besides, i was attracted by a lot of interesting things in the scene. It's a good movie but for me, my favourite movie is The Lord of the Ring.

Yes. It's a great visual experience, nothing more. I found the story to be boring at best, the characters flat, the dialog plain annoying...To be honest, I didn't have high expectations, because I had been told the story was bad, so I wasn't disappointed. I just went to see it because it was supposed to be such a breakthrough in modern film-making, which I'm not entirely sure it was in the end.

Movie for young children. The idea with the blue alien, is tired. It's the one we saw at the mall, once you've made purchases at the shop company preferred. As has some special effects that cost as humanitarian aids in Haiti, we all realized, but that does not make a good movie.

I like Avatar, but yes this isnt the best movie of all time. I like Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. More adventurous, IMO.

I don't think Avatar is as great as it was claimed to be. Yes, it's a good movie and I liked it, but "the greatest movie of all times" it way too exaggerated. There are much better films than it, also containing a lot less special effects. Even the movie 2012 is greater than Avatar. At least there is something we can learn from it. As for me, I can name many movies great: "Lord of the rings", "Of mice and men", "Hook", Star Wars,Armageddon, National Treasure... and so many more.
