Rant about Religion

I really hate it when someone tries to debate with you in terms of religion and beliefs. Why couldn't they just respect what we believe and our practices. I was at the point of getting fed up with one of my office mates who questions lots of Catholic practices especially now that today is Ash Wednesday. He seems to have lots of questions and some of them are quite insulting. I mean, he asked a stupid question- Why is Ash Wednesday called Ash Wednesday instead of dust Wednesday? I mean, come on. Is he joking or just trying to piss me off. I am trying my best to observe one of our practices and he sorts of mocks us. I hope he stops 'cause I am beginning to hate his guts. Sorry for the rant. I feel like I just need to take this all out.

I do get so angry when someone insults me that way. Whatever religion I belong to is none of his business and he has no right to insult me and my religion or any religion for that matter. I too believe in live and let live. I would never critisise another religion or other people's belief and would not like it if they did mine. I would plainly ask them to walk off or shut up and stop the topic or it would get all ugly. I am not a very religious person but it is more of not insulting other person's belief more than their religion or anything else. Just tell him that he is pissing you off with his comments. If he does it again, then you know that he is doing it deliberately.

I was angry inside when he started insulting me. But I tried not to voice it all out because it might just ruin my day. I thought to myself, I don't need to get pissed off. I didn't want to start any further confrontation. If he can't respect what I believed, he doesn't deserve my time. That's why I just suddenly started ranting about it here in mylot and was surprised that a lot of you feel the same way with what I do.

I believe in live and let live and as an atheist I try to do that. However it is the religious institutions that do not do that. In the UK a lot of our laws have been instituted by the church and based on the ideas of early church leaders and a myth that there is some "god" figure who wants these things for which there not a scrap of really evidence. We all know the appalling things that the churches particularly the catholic church have done in the past ie the inguistion (which is still in existance) and burning people alive. I know that these things were done for political reasons but why do the religious organisations allow civil authorities to use them as an excuse for such terrible acts. I think a little bit of mocking is well deserved

Oh and incidently the Nazies again used politics as their moral guide not science. Science does not give anyone moral guidance

Yeah but atheists also deserve mocking. What about all the Communist atrocities? You say you believe in "live and let live" but does that mean that you'll just stand by and do nothing when face with evil. How do you define evil? No man has a right to say, "My morals are better than your morals," so you've got to appeal to something greater than man. That only leaves science and God (unless you can contact some aliens but will they really know better than us?). The Nazis used science as their moral guide, noth said?

It speaks of his poor character and lack of sensitivity to his fellowmates. Noone has a right to mock anyone else; you just cut down your conversation with him and walk out with "no comments' from your side. Or just give him a piece of your mind telling him he has no right to talk to you like this when you are sensitive to his feelings on other issues. If not, you tell him that he is on a superior plane and his questions are something which you "ordinary mortals' cannot answer.

I just stopped talking with him especially with regards to the topic. I'm fine with that and I'm done with him. he doesn't deserve any of my time. I have better things to do than to understand his shallow mind. Thanks for all your comments. I really appreciate every bit of it.

That sounds so crazy. If he was asking questions about your religious practices and really wanted to learn about and respect even the differences that would be okay. It sounds like he is making derogatory statements about your beliefs. I would tell him to know it off.

I would have appreciated it if he would just have asked me questions then maybe I would have been more delighted to share some of our views. But when he started making remarks, I got so irritated and I just stopped talking. It felt like he was mocking me and my religion. It wasn't nice.

Yes Yes Yes Friend I agree with you I am also hating this type of topic because I want to suggest all those peoples who starts debates on terms of religion and beliefs don't make issues on it and don't debate on it. In my opinion every person is a human being it is not a matter their cast is what and their community and religion is what? So stop this silly topic every religion has is own image don't point out any particular religion. My friends are all religion it is important they are my friends not important cast or religion. Really it is a good discussion to know about the viewers view. Thanks for discussion

Thanks for your comments. I am glad that some people feel the same way about this. It really is hurtful when they try to ridicule your beliefs. I don't do stuff like that. I respect and learn other people's religious belief as much as I can in order to avoid offending them in any way. I try to do something about it to show my respect. And this is what I got. Thanks for your comments my friend.

Sometimes its not that people make fun, its just that they don't understand. It's the same as what some people call (pardon my politically incorrect term) "Packie Dot". Its very derogatory and people make fun of it. I had a teacher who was from India and she wore one. The kids used to make fun of her. So one day, she brouht some red stickers to class and explained the importance of this tradition in her culture. We wore them for the whole day in and around school. It helped me develop a respect for the culture.

I thought the red spot on the forehead was mostly a Hindu thing. It's odd calling it a "Packie Dot" as most Pakistanis are Muslims.

there are really some beliefs that are just beliefs, no basis or facts or something. i was a catholic so i know what you mean. but biblically, there are no basis or it contradict the biblical teachings. i respect the catholic, but sometimes, it's not that easy to understand why a certain belief remains when a belief and practiced in this very advanced and technical world we live in now.

We as christians has no right to judge others based on their religious affiliations but on their works. You are catholic and you believe in all your practices. He,IF he is a christian, should know better than to mock you.Whether he believes your practices are right or wrong has no right to do such thing. He can direct you about what the bible say but he should not mock you.I really don't see why we make every body's belief ours simply because we are christians.God gave men the right to choose his/her path in life and no one should take this right away. You are catholic, that's your choice and he can only reveal the truth by quoting what's in the bible. And if you refuse he should accept that he tried.

Dust Wednesday? What does that even mean? I'm a Catholic too so I know what you are talking about. From my experience, I find that us Catholics always seem to have the short end of the stick. Some people just seem to hate us. One person actually was testing me if I know all the words in bible (I don't, is that so wrong). When I couldn't answers what verse he was talking about he said "And I thought Catholics lives by the words in the bible." That pissed me off. I don't have to defend my beliefs with anyone. They always say don't talk about religion if you don't want to get in a fight and I agree. Mind your own business and I will mind my own. I just don't see the point in arguing what religion is more superior than others.

It really makes us feel sad and sorry to hear people mocking other people's belief. I myself had experienced this on many occasions. The thing that I usually do is to remind myself that these mockers are innocent and that they don't know what they're doing or saying. I explain to them the reason behind such religious practice and it's significance to our salvation. There are occasions though that it seems impossible to make them understand (especially the unbelievers), in case like this I just keep quite and pray for their salvation. Keep up the faith.

Don't mind them, just pray for them and be blessed...Bear this in mind, Jesus said: Blessed are you when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven...
