NO I am not so before you even think of reporting this discussion READ it. My point is that I see a lot of different little sketches about Asians and there menus. A lot of them having words that, in english, are considered vulgar. My question is, while it's funny, why do we pick on the Asians? Here in the USA I see commercials about how the Asian communities overseas have much better grades for Math and Science, meaning they are smarter. Heck I've known it for years, and yet we stoop low and just make fun of them for their english? or for the name of their foods? Wow way to go USA... Then again, it is kind of funny. What do you think?

A lot of them also speaks much better English than the so called English speaking countries. Especially when it comes to Old English.... I don't think you are totally right though.[i]'better grades for Math and Science, meaning they are smarter['/i] Just because someone is good in Maths and Science does not necessarily implies how smart that person is. There are lots of smart person who cannot do 2+2. They are smart in different ways. And yeah, why are Americans making fun of Asians?

Heck! The english make fun of the way other English speak English! But if you can't laugh at yourself, (nationally speaking) who can you laugh at?

You're absolutely right, zralte. People always assume that just because a person is good in Science and Maths, that means that person is smart. Being smart is so subjective. Why do people always use mathematical and scientific abilities as the measure of being smart? I think this calls for another discussion.

I honestly do not know, i am asian and well i have not yet experienced such treatment..well probably because i have not traveled outside our country, Philippines. But i have heard of stories where there are people who made fun of our race, asians.. and i have heard of people saying too that is because you guys...umm americans do treat us that way because you guys feel superior. But take note, this did not came from me ok..and i am not generalizing, there might be people who believe in that and i know for a fact that there are also who does not. personally, i do not believe in such... people are people, some are good. some are bad..some judge, some does not.

One only has to look at the actions of the Japanese community in their days of earthquakes, tsunamis and reactor troubles to know they are nothing to joke about. Admiration should be the order of this and any other day. Signed An American

I wonder if they make fun of us too?

Yes, they do. Everyone finds someone to make fun of. That doesn't make it right, but it's one of the human failings. No matter what Americans do to help, we are all lumped together under the heading "Ugly American". The brand hits the brattiest and worst as well as the kindest and it sticks because someone obviously thinks it's a great term to use. It would be a wonderful world if we ever look at each other and see people instead of nationality, color, etc., but I wouldn't hold my breath since humans all over the globe are equally guilty of this particular trait.

Don't think so, why? But reality is...call centers (outsourcing) are here in Asian countries. English people talking with Asians and they don't ever realized they are talking with us. Though,i admit some Asian countries (call centers) are not that good. But i assure..here in my country,Americans can not distinguish they are talking directly from the PHILIPPINES. happy weekend

No idea why the American do what they do :-) But everybody makes fun of of other people speak English. We make fun of how the Swedes try to speak Norwegian, how the Germans speak English, how the English speak French and the other way around, the ones in the south of Norway make fun of how they speak in the north, the ones I in the north probably make fun of the Russians on the other side of the border etc. As for better grade in math and science, that can be due to different education systems. Possibly also due to more fish and less fast food. Fish is good for your brain :-)

I had a Scottish flatmate when I studied in Vienna, so I picked up bits and bobs here and there. Some the vowels I picked up sounds quite weird when taken away from the dialect they belong too :-) So I should go to Scotland for some time so I get a proper Scottish accent and not just 1/3 of one *hehe* Does anyeone else talk like the Queen? She sounds so very English, but I've never heard anyone else but the Royal family talk like that.

Hi smart! Oh well, I am an Asian and I know exactly what you are talking about. But you know, I laugh at it too. It's really funny. I guess it's not bad to laugh at that as long as it's not offensive. Every ethnicity has its own "funny things".

Well, I am an Asian but yes when I read such online, I laugh at them too. It is really funny. But I guess what's making it funny is the translations. Most people tend to translate word per word which gives a funny sentence :)). With regards to food, there are really funny names of food. In my country, some names of foods from the north seems funny for people in the opposite part of the country. But this doesn't mean mocking them, I hope. LOL

Not funny to do that as I dont think they have an L in their langage. they always use an r where an L should be. and yes they should read the whole post before doing a minus on it. I know I have answered some post that got deleted and I am still not sure why

I have seen many things that Asians have translated into English and the fact that they make the attempt should be worth something. I know at the airport in Shanghai, there were some really amusing translations, at least my niece thought so. I think that we Americans need to grow up a little! And we definitely need to improve our teaching method in order to do better! As for the name of their foods, I'm sure that they think the name of our foods sound funny too! It doesn't do much good to do a direct translation because that generally doesn't work. Thanks for bringing this up!

There is some of it that is sort of amusing. But for the most part it is just frustrating trying to understand them and make sense out of what they are trying to say. Alittle jealousy perhaps at what you said about them being smarter. And the growing stress of having more of them in our country. All of that and then some.

Not only do they do better in school, they have an excellent work ethic, and know how to work together as a community when things go wrong. Notice that after a massive earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear reactor breakdown instead of breaking into stores, rioting, and stealing everything they can get their hands on, the Japanese work to help each other. They stand patiently in line for whatever is available and are willing to share with others. Just look at the gangs that ruled for awhile after Hurricane Katrina to see how many of us would handle things. I would only hope that should we have such a thing happen again, Americans will take lessons from the Japanese. They know how to work together to get things pulled back together. They don't make excuses for stealing what isn't theirs just because their is trouble. One neighborhood street was crammed with overturned vehicles and junk deposited by the tsunami. The people got together and had it cleaned by nightfall. That's cooperation at its finest. Nowhere have we seen any sign of any Japanese stomping on someone else to get a little more for themselves. They are a beautiful people.

I've worked in Asia before, so I actually know that there are a lot of Asian whiz kids, who are very smart. The difference I think is that a lot of Asians focus mostly on academics. Unlike in the west where confidence building, and socializing in schools have the same importance as academics. I have seen emails going around how some Asian signs have different meanings when you take it on a western context. And yes they are really funny. The sign is, not the people.

Hi SCG! I understand that British English is different is from American English and hence there could be some problems in comprehending or expressions. Also, English is the second language for people coming from Asian countries and doing justice to your second language is not an easy task. Deepak PS - How is life?

Not only Asians have funny accent. Have you heard of other nationality try to speak another language other than their own? They sound just if not funnier if only they knew... Anyhow, I think people who make fun of other people on how they speak are just plain mean and judgmental.. First look at self to see how well one is before making fun of other for whatever the reason.. The other question?? That is just stereotype? Every nationality have their really smart and not so smart people..

It's funny... I don't think I have ever thought that we picked on Asians. In fact, I have always believed that I would marry an Asian girl, as opposed to an American one. And as for math and science skills, most Asians drastically over run the government-education system we have right now. As for making fun of them... I guess I don't see it as a negative. My manager at work is an Asian man. He's smart, funny, and I make light of his accent all the time. He just laughs, and I laugh. Then we get back to work. I don't see it as an insult, and I would assume he doesn't either, or at least he hasn't said as much. Nor would I do it if he did.

I think if you try to speak Hindi then you will also be a object of fun for all Hindi speaking people. It is about the ascent which is different for the peoples from different countries. I agree with the friend above that if somebody is good at taking good grades in Maths and English then it doesn't mean that they are smarter. Smartness reflects in the process with which we do things but it isn't necessarily decided with the results of the process. It is just my definition of smartness which I just created now, you can have your own. Thanks and have a nice day.

Well, I do know a few Asians who are quite proficient in the language, to whom this stereotypical school of thought doesn't do much justice. It is a known fact that we all do lack in certain prospects, so I guess there's nothing criminal about laughing at our own deficiencies, though there is always someone who would take a joke a little too far, intentionally or otherwise, or one who would take a joke a little too seriously. In both cases, there is a chance that somebody might receive a black eye the next day.
