My oldest has braces. We have always had issues with her teeth. It started with every tooth she first got she had an ear infection. Now I know it is common during teething for the baby to have ear infections. When her adult teeth starting coming in again every one caused an ear infection. When we got the braces she got an ear infection now every time we get them adjusted she gets an ear infection! I can't have her having an infection in her ear every time she gets the braces adjusted, that's every six weeks for the next 2 - 3 years. Any one know how to stop them from happening?

I have "shallow sinuses" (direct quote from the Ear, Nose and Throat guy I saw in my 20's) and so any kind of pressure, even too much wind can make things act up. Glasses can set off a sinus headache, wind can give me ear aches if it is too constant, heck, if the ear pieces are too tight they can give me ear aches! Just not real well constructed I guess...

Yes we have and it is the shape of her inner ear that gets filed with mucus when her teeth are involved. It is common for mucus to form when anything has happened in or around the sinus cavity. We just have to be diligent.

In doing some quick research I found these facts and points of interest: Does she swim in an ocean or lake? If so you might get her some ear plugs. The reason I ask is that you can get bacteria from contaminated water that causes the ear infections. And, I am sure you know some people are prone to get these infections more than others. This can also be a symptom of MPS 1 Disease and I am adding a link here for you: http://www.mps1disease.com/en/patients/about/signs-and-symptoms.aspx?gclid=CO25weSzo6gCFQwFbAodxTVYHw (look at the last listed symptom) Be sure the child is well hydrated and practicing good hygiene (washing of hands often and not being around sick people). And strengthen their immune system with Vitamin C and L-Lysine(an amino acid). Giving antibiotics is said not to help ear infections. Second hand smoke? What are the causes for a middle ear infection? A middle ear infection is usually caused by blockage of the Eustachian tubes – narrow passages that connect each middle ear to the upper throat (just behind the nose). A simple cold or an upper respiratory tract infection can lead to swelling of these tubes (enough to become blocked), and may result in trapped fluid inside the middle ear, a fertile media for bacterial growth. Middle ear infections may occur at any age. However, young children are more susceptible to middle ear infections. The Eustachian tubes in children are small and anatomically closer to the nose, a factor that renders infection transmission easier. Hope it helps!

Thank you but no swimming since last summer. The teeth are all part of the sinus system too, and can cause fluid to pool in the ear. For her it just gets infected easily we have seen specialist before about them and its just her I was the same way, still am. I just never had braces so didn't realize this tiny change to would set them off.

There are natural oils you can use too. I guess we all have something.

hi opinionatedlady I cannot see how braces could cause an ear infection at all. I think its more likely she had a low grade infectipn and it never quite cleared up. I really would take her to an eye ear and throat specialist to find out whats really causing the ear infecton. otherwise it will keep on going. I am no doctor but if you were going to a doctor and these infections kept coming back I would really change doctors as ear infections can be cured so he is missing something or she does not take all of her antibiotic. you must keep taking the medication as prescribed even after the infection stops until you use up all the antibiotic up. good luck a nd God bless too.

When she was younger we took her to the ear and throat doctor. Two actually. Teeth are part of the sinus system and her's is slightly sensitive because of her inner ear is thinner then most that is why it becomes infected. We had her on nasal sprays for a while when teething and are set up to go back and see if we can get another prescription for them to see if it will help.

I had braces for 2years too but never had the ear infection. I think you should talk to the doctor about it. Braces is annoying :/ I couldn't eat foods that I wanted and had this huge list of what not to eat. I also couldn't eat properly for a few days after it got adjusted and that was like once a month. While eating, even if the spoon slightly hit my teeth, it felt like dying. I'm so glad it's alll over now.
