do i have to give my passport scan in domain name registration

i recently registered a domain in WebsiteSpot.com and after about 2 days they send me a mail that i should verify it by sending a scan of one of my official documents. I logged in to my account to make sure that the mail was from them and yes, they required me to send the scans. Is this normal? It is my 1st domain registration so am quite new to this. please advise thanks
