"Don't talk to idiots because you can instruct them."

I saw a T-Shirt saying "Don't talk to idiots because you can instruct them." In my own experience, you cannot instruct them : a friend explained me years ago that you can fill in ignorance, but that stupidity is a full. Have you faced the wall of stupidity, a wall larger and higher than the Great Wall of China, and been unable to be understood by somebody ? And when it happens, are you angry, do you find it funny, or ... ?

Hi Saphrina, On the moment, they get also on my nerves, but, often, after a minute, I find the situation funny. You are right, the best is to ignore them.

Hello Topffer I have lived in such a way that I use to get really offensive, in my past. It caused me a great deal of stress and so much loss of valuable time. What I have learned in life is to simply grin and bear it. It may not make me look courageous but I am the one who lives with me. So me has to be happy or then what is the point of living. So now I have learned to be a bit annoyed then by ignoring and then tend to find it funny. I guess it is a good way to dust it off and move on.

When you have a choice of how to react to a situation, the least stressful one is the best. I would say we live a little longer when we let go of the annoyances in life.

"Grin and bear it" is the good philosophy. When I was younger, I was not patient and I disliked to explain two times the same thing to a person. I am really patient today, but stupidity is always proud of itself, and I finish to find funny these situations. Anyways, to be angry would not settle anything here.

I agree GG because I am one to choose the option of life. Although several things in life do annoy I am one who prefers to ignore. After a while I can smile and laugh at how pretty funny it was to begin with.

This is a very interesting topic. I do not like talking to idiots not because I can instruct them. often, it is because I get frustrated and impatient and anger kills. Perhaps it is plain ignorance that makes that idiots an idiot in my eyes. However, to be fair to the idiot, an idiot to one may not be an idiot to another.

My look on this comes froma quote from John Wayne. "Life is tough. It is even tougher when you're stupid." That is so true and so many people are like this! I have learnt over the years you can't instruct idiots either! They can't be changed! Plain and simple! They aren't worth the time!

Idiots cannot be instructed, so I don´t try. It would be stupid of my part. Ignorance, on the other hand is something you can help change by talking and teacheng. Some people confuse idiocy with lack of instruction. It is quite different. It´s nothing to be angry about and it is not funny at all. You don´t laugh or get angry at someone because he/she is mentally handicapped.

Way to go marguicha! if we teach the ignorants then the "normal" people would be the idiots...may be we should start with our head of states, the presidents, prime ministers, the politicians, they cause more trouble than any uneducated person, and they live [in so called] ignorance bliss! how convenient is that!

I have a soft stop where "normal" people are. I think it is just statistics. Noone is perfect. Not even I was, when I was young and beautiful. And I keep on hoping that less educated people can be educated.

Thank you marguicha for the explanation of the difference between idiocy and ignorance. I made also a confusion between French and English in this discussion. In French an idiot is not... so idiot than in English. In fact, I did not wanted to talk of really mentally handicapped persons. I will certainly not laugh or be angry about any handicap, and I have some very personal reasons that I have explained once at myLot, but honestly I have always been afraid by mentally handicapped persons, and I tried to help their families when I was able to do it.

hi friend, if stupidity is a full, do you think there is no more hope of emptying it like thru hypnosis or therapy, and refilling it again by re-indoctrination. No seriously friend, I think stupid people could be a danger to people around them sometimes, like leaving things on the floor for other people to slip, they leave or do things that might cause a fire or get somebody electrocuted, some people could become so stupid that they become a danger even to themselves, but I was also thinking if it's there fault if they are stupid? intelligence for sure is not distributed equally in like manner physical attributes are also the same, not everyone gets a fair slice of the pie

I am purring like my cat now, friend. I visited once during an open doors day an educational farm for mildly retarded persons and was also on guard after a teacher said to us : "Don't walk near a tractor : we had two accidents last year." I think I am afraid because it is very difficult to communicate with a stupid person. After a moment I find the situation funny, maybe is it the best to do.

Hello louievill, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." My browser crashed when I was typing this response. It is a case where I aspire to become poor in spirit and to be happy with my PC without asking me this existential question : why has it crashed ? When I was a student I saw friends under hypnosis in a show and was impressed by what you can do with post-hypnotic suggestions, like striking a wall with a shoe. You can certainly make somebody intelligent looking stupid, but I am not sure of the contrary. I was not thinking of people that could be dangerous for themselves when starting this discussion, but at some lighter cases. You are raising the tone of the debate. It is certainly not their fault if they are stupid : personally I am a bit afraid by these people -- I mean really stupid -- and I stay away.

yeah really friend, I for one is on guard when I sense stupidity, and you know why? because they might do something real stupid but that depends on the severity of course. No was not raising the tone of the debate friend, was just trying to explore other sides of your wonderful and multi faceted discussion, seriously I think it's full of deeper intelligence into it

@GF : Yes, that was what the "..." after the "or" were for - allow sometime to pass and then smile later. @topffer: It is not philosophical but what I learned - many a times, I have avoided so many quarrels, disagreements, arguments and even petty fights by behaving stupid. Though many people around do not like or appreciate my behaving stupid at times but I know it is me who gains at end... mentally at least - so what it might send out a wrong impression about me, it is not love at first sight kind of thing and I know I always have a chance to get that "impression" right on another day.

Hi thesids, "Ignorance in today's world is messy" : I believe that ignorance has always been messy, though the knowledge needed today is not the same than a century ago. "I feel happy when I find myself behaving stupid" : Too much philosophy for me, here, you have to explain me that. Personally I feel ashamed when I am behaving stupid, but I can laugh of myself later. I am probably also in the or category -- sorry, I am making a bad pun in French where "hors catégorie" means "outstanding" -- and I have the same attitude than hardworkinggurl to deal with these situations.

I would say that those called idiots are just people who are already set in their ways and do not want to listen to others nor change their ways. Sometimes that's the way I see thing that is different from others so they kind of looking at me strangely and I bet they labeled me as an idiot, too...

And if I want to convince somebody as dumb as me, we will both think that we are in front of an idiot. At the end I find these situations funny. Have a nice evening.

People are born 'uninformed.' There is knowledge, and they do not have it yet. These are not necessarily "idiots." 'Idiots' are people who are uninformed to the fact that they ARE uninformed. That is, they think that they are right. An example: some churches, raising big-money for far-away places when there are places nearby that could use it better (which is like King David letting his castle crumble in order to better serve a poor non-citizen). But the point is that idiots--thinking they are right--will not hear you tell them directly how wrong they are (that is, they may ACKNOWLEDGE your words, but they will not change course.) The only thing you can do is let the idiots go on their prodigal ways and wait for them to ask you how they were wrong.

There is no way you can instruct an idiot. What I have learned over time, is that most often these type of people are ones who are very disrespectful and will never listen to you or any other type of advice, etc. offered to them as well. These are usually the type of people you really need to look out for as they will go around using people never stopping to think of anyone but themselves. Somehow someday it is really time for them to wake up.

It is true that you cannot convince a person who does not want to believe, sometimes you can show them the evidence that they are wrong and they will simply close their minds. This is especially true in areas of religion and politics. Yes I have come across this in my life and my reactions have varied. Sometimes I have been angry when their response affected me in some way. Sometimes I find it amusing but more often I find it simply frustrating.

I did not intended to speak of religion or politics : I believe that in these domains we are always the idiot of somebody else, and vice versa. Indeed it is frustrating to not be able to make somebody changing his mind when he is completely wrong ! It can be pathetic sometimes, but in many cases I find it funny after a moment.
