Well I do this things to improve my English: 1.Watch English movies and TV shows. 2.Read English books. This helps you learn new words through context clues and also teach you grammar and spelling. 3.Listen to Native English speakers. Some lessons are not learned in books. Like using slangs, twangs, and shortcuts. e.g. "I'm gonna". Plus you get to learn the accent. 4.Don't be afraid to talk in English. It doesn't matter if it's broken. Just talk using it until your tongue feels comfortable in doing it. 5.Don't be ashamed to ask for help. whether it's pronunciation or spelling. Just ask away.

English is impossible to learn within a few days alone. You not only have to memorize the phrases, you'll need to be ready about different responses to certain questions. It's too complicated so you might as well just learn other skills.

@Cowboy... Just because something may seem too complicated to you that doesn't mean that someone else should "give up" on learning it. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses but if they are really committed to learning something than I don't see why they can't succeed. Way to be supportive :-/

English language is not my first language either, but I learned it because English subject is part of our curriculum from primary to secondary to tertiary education. English subject is one of the top three important subjects in our school (that is country-wide). It is our country's secondary language, primary is Tagalog (I'm from The Philippines, by the way). English language is widely used by Filipinos that is why we're no longer find it a stranger. If you'll get the chance to visit our country, you will see and hear english words and/or phrases everywhere. You will see it from signages, sign boards/posters, TVs, commercials, radio, movies, from the court houses, from the senate and congress, schools, etc. We also use english during job interviews and even with our usual conversation with our friends, family and other people. It's really everywhere! Though, we've been using this language for a long time, there are still Filipinos who are not adept yet with this language. You will still see grammar lapses and tenses, incorrect spelling, incorrect tone and diction (choice of words), and improper pronounciation and enunciation of words. We still strive to correct those mistakes and be proficient with this language because it's a must for every Filipinos. Learning English is not easy especially if that is not your native or primary language. If you want to be proficient in English, keep on using it everyday. Have a dictionary, thesaurus and grammar book with you. Watch english films, read english books, articles, magazines, etc., so you will get use to hear and write english words and phrases. Practice engish writing and speking with correct grammar, tenses, spelling and diction. If you have doubts that your english is not good, don't be ashamed of it. Instead, ask someone who can make corrections for you. It's ok to commit mistakes. If you're online and you don't have your dictionary with you, you can always go to merriam-webster.com. If you can afford to pay an English teacher who can teach you this language, go ahead and look for one. There are many online english teachers who can teach you english at your convenient time. Practice makes perfect. Practice english everyday. Say, your household speaks Mandarin, try speaking with them in english everyday. If you're having conversation with someone, converse to him/her in english. Treat english just like your primary language. Use it ALWAYS. Keep on practicing and soon you will see yourself speaking and/or writing in English effectively and proficiently :)

Learning writing and speaking english is not possible in a short period it require enough time and lot of efforts. You must be read more as possible and write maximum you can. When you have good bank of english word in your brain than try to speak it. For it you must be live within the group who speak english.

hello, I also admire those people speaking fluently in English. Well, I don't have that kind of ability because I always get shake whenever I will speak in front of the people or anything which makes me feel nervous. You know I cant give you advice that is the best. But I think you only need more practice, but always remember that don't memorize any word because it makes you feel more confuse doing some sentences. alright? good luck

I suggest the following steps: i)Fluency: If you have a TV, open any English news channel. Watch it and start repeating each and every word that the news reader speaks. You can also record a speech in your tape recorder, and try to speak with that setting the recorder on. ii)Stock of words: Keep a small notebook and a small pencil in your pocket. Watch each and every signboard board beside your walkway. Note the unknown words in the notebook. Come home, take your dictionary and find out the meanings of those noted words. iii)Syntax: Take a newspaper. Select 1/2 paragraphs daily, read each and every word. Check how many are known to you. Find the meanings of the unknown words from your dictionary. Also, note which adjectives/adverbs are being used to qualify/modify which nouns/pronouns or adjectives/adverbs! iv) Reckoner: You have to make three ready reckoners i) for referring tenses, ii) for referring appropriate prepositions and iii)for referring appropriate adjectives/adverbs. I hope, if you practise these, you will be able to raise your standard to the acceptable limit within 6 months. However, it is an ongoing process.

First try to know how we learn languages? we hear from our family members and relatives or siblings then we remember and say the same things, and it generally happen easily because that is our mother tongue so...similarly if you know A to0 Z that means there is nothing to worry to learn English, always try to think everything in English what ever is in your mind, then talk to your self in English and start writing on note book in English and correct your self then start talking with others and see the difference.

Where are you from in China ? Here is my experience in learning English ,btw ,I still got a long way to go before I master it First and foremost ,you gotta be well aware what your exact accent is ,British ,american or other . IF you got this ,then concentrate on that ,don't bother knowing other accents . If you speak American English ,then speak like how they do . Just get used to it ,I speak American ,now when listening to people in other areas talking ,I can really feel the differences and uncomfortableness . Learning English is also about knowing the priority ,I mean ,which part you should do first and which you gotta put more effort and time in. You know ,using a language is always about speaking it other than reading and writing which is the last process in knowing a language even you mother tongue . So find yourself a way to get to know more and more native speaker ,befriend 'em ,talk with 'em . No worry about what their accents are ,just focus on your own ,but don't ever speak Chinese-English .If you keep doing this for years ,then you will feel you are really kind of in to it . That is when you can start doing some writing and reading and keep 'em up. Hope you get what I'm saying and make the best of it in no time . Regards ...

Any language can be hard to learn when you first start. I was taught French in second grade. I can still read most of the words to read a book in French. But only know few to speak. I took Latin in high school for medical terminology for later when I would be in the medical field. It was a very rough language to learn. English has so much slang, and diversions of the actual language itself, depending on who you are learning it from it can become confusing. I wish you well in your speaking and writing of English.

The best advice is to expose yourself to the language as m,uch as you can and express it as m,uch as you can. Exposure could mean any ,media that has English language in it - whether it would be books, papers, TV, movies, songs, internet, speeches or a skit (and m,any more others). Expressing through the language is often the more difficult part, especially for people who don't have it as their mother tongue. But it is not an excuse not to practice the language. Use it whenever and wherever you can. Random conversation, writing (though it is more difficult than oral communication), a monologue, singing in the bathroom, talking to your dog or with people. Ask people to help and teach you (or even engage a fellow to talk and speak with you). The thing is doing it and improving day by day. there is no perfect English but it is always important to improve and use.

English, like most any other language can be learned and perfected trough practicing, and I would say- practicing a lot! Imagine a teenager who has never driven a car. Can he/she drive a car it take it onto a freeway...? Perhaps not. Some people are better in speaking a language, others prefer reading or writing. What ever gives you the most satisfaction you should do first. Confidence and fluency will eventually become appearant. Listening to native speakers can help too, picking up grammar and vocabulary as you go along. There are hundreds of way out there. Remember, English is one of themost complex languages (besides Chinese, of course- LOL)

Hi there, Welcome to MyLot! I also have a Non-English background. But with constant practice, you can learn to speak good english. When i was 7, my dad always insisted me to talk in English(even at home) and not in my mother tongue. Also, i studied in a English medium school, so i had a constant practice of speaking English. You can buy some books that teach you the correct arrangement of words and punctuations for English language. Aslo, watching English movies can be a great option. People tend to grasp fun things faster. You don't need to be depressed not being able to speak English well. Lots of people have accents while speaking English and it is absolutely normal. I hope this will help. Stay positive!

Hi there! I was so ecstatic to respond to your article because I'm actually an online English tutor. However, unfortunately this online tutoring service is only for Japanese people. But I am sure that there are similar online tutoring services. I can give you some tips if you want. First is, know what you need to focus on. Second, read books or articles out loud. Third, enrich your vocabulary. Fourth, try to converse with others in English. I've found that practice always makes perfect. Before I became a tutor, there were still times that I stuttered or found it hard to express myself. As I tutored more and more students, I eventually got the hang of speaking in English. :)
