I guess I am feeding my inner child

Growing up we did not buy cold cereal at all, I thought of it as a special treat if we got Wheaties or Raisin Bran or Shredded Wheat. We ate hot breakfasts, bacon and eggs and juice. I did not buy cereal often for my kids, either, except on rare occasions. None of those sugary fun ones either. I found the Chex Cereals to be good, but they were also priced too high for me. I made Chex Mix a couple of times, but it was way too salty. Well, General Mills has been running some good coupons, then the Kroger grocery offered a $5 gift card for purchasing four cereals. I bought tons of them. I made Chex mix, and I think the recipe has changed, or I just used less seasoned salt. Then I made another recipe from a box, that has Corn Chex and Pop Corn and chili powder and garlic powder. I used plain pop corn. This tastes great. I would also like to use a lime seasoning on it sometime. Hubby likes this one. I also made "Muddy Buddies" or some people call it Puppy Chow. I added in some Reeses Cereal as well. If you came to my house right now, you would think I had gone overboard. I cannot believe that my husband had never had Puppy Chow. Actually the mixes are for the family weekend. We usually have about twenty of us for Holidays, and I really think this is healthier than chips. I have some other plans for some more cereals. I will probably will use some carmel corn recipes with some of the Honey Nut or Cinnamon Chex. Cereal is a good snack and I may keep on doing this. At least until I use up all the boxes I have. My son is questioning whether or not this could be counted as a form of hoarding. I think I am just enjoying something I seldom or never got to enjoy when I was younger. Do you ever treat yourself to something you really wanted as a child?

I think it is good to treat yourself occasionally. And, we must remember that hoarding is only a problem when it becomes a problem. In your case I don't think it has. We used to eat Cheerios and Kix when I was young. And the Wheaties and loved SHredded Wheat. Still do. I love to go out for breakfast.

I want pancakes or waffles for breakfast if I eat out. I try to eat oat based cereals a lot because they are heart healthy and help lower your cholesterol. No one says that they have to taste bad, though. I always have something I can eat on hand. I guess I fear going hungry.

That is true and rye is supposed to be good for you too. I usually get french toast or an omelette. And there is one place that serves Quisch too.

Strange but I don't remember much about breakfast growing up. I so want to get some money and go do the offer of buying 4 boxes and get the $5 gift card!! We are finally getting down on cereal having the grandkids over every other weekend. We don't really do cereal here. Jasmine likes yogurt or fruit for breakfast...Steve isn't usually here but when he is he has eggs and toast, or Malt O Meal and toast....I have my Carnation Instant Breakfast. I love me a good sugary bowl of cereal for lunch sometimes though! Marsha

I printed coupons at MyPoints and at Swagbucks. I think this would be a pretty good deal, if you start with coupons and then get the card. I got two of them. I don't know why I am telling you about coupons, you know all about it. Hope you have a happy birthday this week.

No, they have to be separate transactions. Swagbucks is ten SB for each one when you redeem them. I know it is getting tighter and tighter here. You know, you can watch the beezag type videos on Inbux too.

are you saying that you can do the deal twice in one transaction? do you earn swagbucks for printing coupons from there? I've been printing first from inboxdollars now since they pay .10 for each one you print and redeem! My main problem right now is just no money to spend on things we just don't need. The next 2 paychecks are gone to pay the mortgage and all the utilities and the phone bill. Marsha

I don't believe in cereal either. Never liked the stuff!!! As a child, it was rare that I'd ever get a chocolate bar. Now, I buy them all the time. OK I don't go cray, and gorge on them, but I do like one now and then, so now when I want one, I buy one.

You just hit the nail on the head for me. I had heart surgery in Sept. and I have had some strange cravings. I have heard to eat cheerios for the heart.........they now make chocolate ones ! They are expensive ! but, if you look at Lucky Charms, the health facts are bout the same and Lucky charms have marshmallows in them ! So, as a kid we had post toasties, shredded wheat and cooked oats, rice...Dull cereal, no wonder nobody wanted to eat it.. So, now I have chocolate cheerios and Lucky Charms for Breakfast and for a snack at the puter, I eat a bowl of Lucky Charms. I have not lost my tast for these cereals nor have have they grown old to me. I think they are keeping me healthy as the box says,DID YOU KNOW? 95% OF AMERICANS AREN'T EATING ENOUGH WHOLE GRAIN. Just grab a box and see the ingredients . The ingredients are good for anyone. I don't think YOu are nuts or hoarding either. WE tend to make things we want or need. I did. quita

I have had the banana nut cheerios, but not the chocolate. I really like the Multi grain cheerios. Most of this trail mixes and such are healthier than other kinds of snacks.

I haven't had the multi grain or the banana nut. I think the more whole grain stuff we eat helps clean out our arteries and helps prevent heart attacks, and also keeps ME regular ! after a colonoscopy, one must think of taking action LOL

I live in a different country that has a different tradition than yours. In Indonesia, we eat hot food in the morning, I guess everything must have rice in it. But younger generation now is adopting the western style, hence we have bread, toast, and cereal for breakfast, too.

Yes, when I stayed in a big hotel, I always like to go for breakfast, because then I can try things that I never eat before, and understand how the others eat.

Yes, when I was really little I always wanted a dog. Finally, when I was about 11 or so, mom got us a dog. I also wanted a kitty and dad always said no way so now I have cats as well.

From time to time I have done this, and it feels good. Especially if these are the Cereals I have been enjoying since I was younger. For the most part we have never found ourselves going overboard except for when they have had a really good Sale when we have had some Extra $$ as well. As for the Chex Mix, etc. these are good snack foods to have.

Big G cereals have been promoting that they are high in fiber, and that is something most of us need. I like making the mixes at home as I can control the salt in it.

I am away from home, visiting, so I will see if I can give it from memory. 8 or 9 C of assorted Chex in a bowl. Melt 1 C chocolate chips and 1/2 C peanut butter in microwave or on stove top until smooth. Add a teaspoon of vanilla. Pour over the Chex and stir until coated. Once it has cooled, put it in gallon ziploc bags with powdered sugar and shake until covered. Keep in a covered container.

yes, BUT... There is NOTHING like my corn allergy - wheat can make me a bit loose, if eaten in excess... no, I avoid corn and peppers (both hollow and black). Now, as my friends say, I actually don't like more things and don't eat them than I'm allergic to and don't eat. I don't like pineapple, coconut, olives (like olive oil), honeydew melons and I'm sure I could come up with more, but my brain hurts... I will be bringing along my antigen on my trip... just in case...

You got me on that one! FRUIT LOOPS. I didn't get them as a child because my mum believed in nutrition and said those were "cheat food." They are, but I do have a weakness for them once in a while and coincidentally, I just got done munching on a few handfuls with a glass of milk. Now I'm off to bed. I never had Puppy Chow either!

I believe I have had all or something like all of that at one time or another. When I was younger I pretty much got all I wanted food wise, so there wasn't much I didn't get to eat. Of course they didn't stuff me with candy either, but you get what I mean. No, usually what I treat myself to isn't food related, it's game related or the such. Though now a days I have to go out to eat to get food I really like.

In my family we ate quite unhealthily when I was a child, as at that time (because I'm quite old), very little was known about things such as cholesterol. Whenever I feel my inner child needs nurturing, I will always crave the foods I was given when I was small and will go out of my way to buy and eat them. Once my inner child is satisfied, I then forget all about those foods (high fat and lots of sugar) until the next time.

I am just a bit older than you. I bought all of the cereal, and it is now sitting on my shelf waiting for me. With weather turning hot I am going to be ready to eat cold breakfasts. It is good to have choices.

favourite food - Chocolates is my favourite food and I will go to any length to get them.
I simply love this topic. Yes. I too wanted to eat Halwa to my heart's content when I was a kid and this stuff was rationed out to us and so also chocolates. Today I have the freedom to stack up any quantity if I want to. Not so much the halwa but I do go over board with chocolates. I have been on several foreign holidays and the main shopping has always been chocolates. And as luck would have it I now have a source right under my nose - home made chocolates truly truly classy. This shop has varieties too. So it is chocolates in the morning, chocolates in the evening, chocolates at supper time. be my little chocolate and love...... I hope you know this song!

I do know that song. Honey in the morning, etc. From when I was a kid. I will have to check on Halwa. It will give me something interesting to search for. So, since you have homemade chocolates in a shop are you living above it? I think I would go crazy, smelling chocolate all day.

Halwa - This is carrot halwa. Halwa is made from different ingredients.
No not so close Garden but here in India, in my very own town, just a ten minute ride! Halwa is a typically Indian item, very sweet and there are several varieties. If you go on line you will even get the recipe and you might like to try it out if you have a sweet tooth. When I was holidaying in the US I visited so many shops where they used to have a corner where they prepared chocolates and we could buy the fresh stuff.

i find this post to be quite amusing... because i once talked with an old friend.. and he mentioned something like it - feeding his inner child.. and he was talking about snacks that he seldom get to have when he was young - because it was kinda costly, and because his parents didnt want to feed him those nasty things.. he still craves for them, of course - and now, he's all grown up, and have his money - can buy loads of them - and which he does.. statched them away from his own kids.. and eats them when he's all alone.. sort of a 'treat' for him ownself... .. my own husband does that too, sometimes.. treat himself to things he never had when he was younger.. but he likes to share with our kidz.. to make sure that our kidz wont have, or minimize that kinda same 'cravings' later on in their lives..

Yum yum yum! Boy does that sound good lol! I probably treat myself all the time, by some people's standards. I didn't have a lot of good cereal around, or chips or soda for that matter when I was a kid, so I pretty much ALWAYS have my pantry stocked. As a result, I really don't pig out much lol. I'm not sure why people think cereal is so expensive, I usually stock up when it's cheap, like less than $2 or I have a coupon that makes them less than $2 each. Also, the store brands tend to be both cheaper and a larger box, so you get a better deal all the way around. I think I've had puppy chow - isn't it something you make with chex, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar? it's pretty yummy. I like regular chex mix too but I haven't made it, I've just gotten it in bags at the store.

I think our problem was money as much as anything, and if you do not have money, you cannot get what you want. You have to be careful
