Every Filipino high-school student were forced to study two historically important novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, These novels are created by the National hero of the Philippines, Dr. Jose Rizal he is a Surgeron and Novelist who started the revolution against the Spanish invaders. Basically his 2 novels were about the social cancer Filipinos are going through during Spanish occupation of the Philippines. During the Spanish rule, the term Filipino is only used for Spaniards who lives in the Philippines... during the Spanish rule, The people we call now as Filipinos were called "indios" Its some sort of a racist term. Rizal only wanted the Spaniards to Treat the Indios better, or much more human, He fought for equality through his novels, but it cause dhim his life. After he died, The "indios" opened their eyes and fought for freedom. These 2 novels he wrote are so important that we were obliged to read and study chapter by chapter. Rizal's novels are actually a trilogy, He have a 3rd novel sequel titled Makamisa but he only manage to make 1 chapter because he is persecuted before he gets to finish it. I am kinda curious what would have been the plot of this novel and how it could have influenced the Philippine history.

forced was the right term alright. hehe i didn't hear about the 3rd novel. or perhaps back in highschool the 2 is so much torture already that i couldn't care for a 3rd. lol don't get me wrong, i love history and learning about people and cultures of different races not just our own. i love knowing how things came to be and the story that spun thru time. what i didn't like was how highschool teachers (in my time and in my school in particular only... coz i don't know about others) taught history subjects. perhaps if there are more creative ways of teaching history, more people will be interested in the history itself and not just memorizing the dates and names and events etc. if the 3rd installment of the trilogy was ever finished, it would hit the books as well and be part of the history too.

perhaps. but since the 3rd installment didn't materialize... we'll never know for sure. i just hope that actual readers could learn a thing or two... because noli and el fili are not just 2 novels.

I have a feeling though there are many highschool students who are happy this 3rd novel is not finished, because they have to study a 3rd novel if ever that novel is finished. anyway Capitan Tiago and Basilio are in the novel. It seemed Like Rizal really wanted to build up him since Noli. since he is developed since childhood.

I know we started to see Basilio as a naive brother who failed to save his brother Crispin and His mom is the most iconic fictional character ever, As in she became a template for crazyness in acting auditions. In El Fili Rizal showed as Basilio is more than a son of Sisa. His Tragic lovestory with Huli is epic. In Makamisa, I heard He is supposed to be built more as a character, so he could be the real hero of the trilogy of the story, not Ibarra.

I didnt enjoy Noli that much because I hate My Filipino teacher (schoolsubject not the nationality)He is one mean jerk and the story is kinda full of depression. El Fili is a sad story but its full of intensity and tension. I remember playing Simoun in a school stage-play, He is badass anti-hero character.

You have just showed one of the things I love about being on MyLot. I have learned a lot about world history and other cultures by being here. When books are in a series, you always wish for another one.

These 2 novels are public domain so you can read them for free online in English.. It tackles many issues like racism, discrimination, corruption in the church, abuse of women, and many controversial social issues. every Filipino who manage 2 finish highschool, gets to read these novels but not the unfinished ones.

There are two available books about Rizal's 3rd novel, Ambeth Ocampo's Makamisa and Nilo Ocampo's Etikang Tagalog. Etikang Tagalog is the translation of the 3rd novel, while Makamisa is story of how the author found Rizal's missing manuscript in the National Library Archives.
