Subhee demands a laptop to take to school

India
April 27, 2011 9:00am CST
My granddaughter Subhee has started going school. When I am in home or my wife in home working on pc or laptop, she sits near us. She enjoys playing with the key board. She can switch on a pc or laptop, open word page and type all letters in alphabet and the numbers too. Of course we taught this to her. To learn alphabet I used to open a word page, make letters large and colored, next she typed, she uses the mouse in pc but her fingers in laptop. She also practices alphabet on a slate using chalk and also on paper with pencil. I was out from home for few days, returned today, now she says; ‘Dadaji give me a small computer to take to the school’. I am not going to fulfill this demand, but I bought a talking slate toy, if you press the alphabets or numbers keys, it talks out words, good for learning words, numbers and pronunciations. Am I right? Do your kids demand modern gadgets? Please respond and share your views. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

Both my eight year old daughter and my four year old son want to have computers of their own because of the fact that their father and myself both have one. However, I will let them use our computers so that they are able to learn from the vast array of resources that are available. However, I will not let them have computers of their own because I don't believe that they are old enough to have one of their own yet.

You are right dorann, just permit them to use your computer at times and explain how it functions, buy for them later only, when you think it proper Thanks for sharing your views God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

it is truly said that present generation is computer minded.they do not have to learn computer.they know it very well they just have to watch someone working on it.i think you should teach your granddaughter properly but her age is not that much that she should have her personal computer to use.i think she should learn with you othrwise there are lots of things on internet which can spoil children and at this is it will be very harmful to be in touch with any such nuisance.my view is that you are doing right not buying her computer, this is the age where she should play with her friends outside instead of just sitting in front of the computer and wasting her childhood which she never going to get back.i think you should also make her interested in other activities like sports.it will be good for her.after all computer is virtual world and we have to cope up with real world, the experience of the real world she will only get if she will associate with the real world and real people.some good and bad experience, computer can make her addicted with it and may also harm her study.you are doing the right thing and everyone should do this.

Kids receive modern technology at a very young age, and I don't think a lot of it is necessary. I have a friend who has a 5 year old brother who already has a cell phone. What can you do with a cell phone when you are 5? I got a cell phone when I was 16! A lot of children have lap tops as well, and I don't think they should receive lap tops when they are so young. I think it can be a good teaching tool, but in some doses like you or your wife playing with her on it and teaching her. I think you are right in not giving it to her because I think modern technology is only good till a point. If children grow up on computers, they don't learn some important critical thinking skills they need to develop because computers do the thinking for you.

hi,professor,i think you have made your decision and it's wise.you bought her another electronic gadget which can help with her learning a lot instead of a computer.i know childrens nowdays are more clever and precocious and they learn quickly the usage of those things, instead thus can cost them a lot of times if they access to some games ,maybe that generate another problem.so talk to her and promise if she could fulfil something you expect then you will buy it for her as an exchange.well i prefer children to paticipate in more ourdoor games but not sitting in front of computer too early,it's not benificial for their health especially eyes and posture...

The schools teach computer classes from a very young age here, but they do not want children bringing computers to school. When my thirty four year old son was going to start school he thought he needed a calculator. Like you, I bought an educational toy, that did math functions. I thought it was a good compromise, and it made him happy as well. Even better, I got it second hand and it was very inexpensive.

Here good schools allow students to use computer from grade 4th only, but they can't carry laptop, calculators to school, things are changing very fast, we have given her a toy laptop only, she enjoys playing with it. Thanks for sharing your views God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

third time copy paste. I think you have the right idea as she is y oung yet and the gadget you gave her will surely do for now. wait til shes at least 12 then perhaps it will be a g reat gift to have at school providing the schools do not already provide them as they d o that here in our American schools but I am not sure at what grade level they provide the computers for.You are very intelligent and she still pretty young but now they do learn really fast and she may be ready for one byu ten or eleven but w ait and see.I have no ideas on how computers are viewed in Indian schools but I like you feel shes y oung yet., loll.

Mom What you mean by 'third-time' copy paste? In good schools, kids are introduced to computers from grade 4th, her dad her brought for her a toy laptop, it looks like real one, if she presses the keys, the characters appear on the LCD screen too She is happy, enjoying the gadget.. Thanks for sharing, hope you are fine God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

My daughter goes to a school that discourages use of electronics at young ages so I have not had that issue for the last few years. It was great while it lasted but now she is 9 and with almost everyone having cell phones, ipads, ipods, etc., my daughter now asks for those things and insists I upgrade my old cell phone to and iphone. I cannot totally shield her from these things but I am in no hurry to go out and get any of them. I am so glad she is currently focused on her building project at school that she has dropped the conversation for now, but parents have an uphill battle when it comes to electronics in today's society.

hello dada, Oh,she's cute asking a lappy hehehe. I am sure she's not yet aware of what she's wishing. My second son had his motorbike when he's 13 and it's a graduation gift from his dad. My daughter received her laptop when she's 15 and also a graduation gift from her dad. My youngest son also has his PS3 when he is 10 yrs old from his dad too. Kids are too wise to know the uses of gadgets... how's your health dada? hope you are fine always

very smart comment you have given, and i think it's the best answer,it's not wise to fulfil any demands your kids asked, children are very easy to be addicted into something.so as an award of good scores or excellent behavior at school maybe a stimulation for her rather than satisfied all the wishes as long as she/he puts
