I Wish I Could Stick To An Exercise Regime

The trouble with me is..I start something i.e. Roborolling or dancing around the room but NEVER finish it, therefore I don't reap the benefits. The only time I persevered with the Roborolling was the few months before I got married in 2008. I did take Slimming Pills as well that cost a lot of money but they DID work. However, I don't like taking them for long periods of time so many of them were thrown away. As far as my food habits go..I don't eat the right things, I admit that BUT I'm not continually feeding my face, and I hate take-aways, apart from the chippy once a week. My vain vice are sweets. Today I wore my red top that I (usually) love but once I spotted my fat belly sticking out..my God I looked pregnant and I'm definitely NOT "up the duff" believe me! So, what do I do? Should I stop eating sweets altogether? I've already cut the booze out drastically so I feel much better that way, despite not being an alcoholic, I just didn't like drinking booze every night, do you know what I mean? It's only twice a week now and I'm sticking to it. One day I may reduce it altogether but booze relieves the boredom of my sorry little life and John goes out once a week to play snooker..so this is the main reason I have the small amount of booze as well. I still reckon my weight gain is due to an over-active thyroid but, since the bleeding has reduced greatly since my Mirena Coil was fitted 6 months ago..I don't know if this is the real reason for my weight gain. My weight tends to hover around 13 stone and always reduces at Mum's house as I'm out and about more. The thing is; walking anywhere on my own isn't the same and John is at work most days. What I need for my own self-esteem is to lose weight through exercise. There has to be an exercise I can do that will flatten this hideous belly of mine. Any ideas?

Janey I never thought ever this would ever work. Although I was not big to begin with I was since my teen years a terrible roller coaster dieter, more like starver. See I could easily drop weight and look like a bone very quickly and it would not last more then 1 1/2 years before I was back to my old habits. Almost 3 years now I finally listened to my son, who is such a fitness fanatic. So I began eating 3 - 4 very sensible meals and he and I went out and he picked out the bike I own. Which is the Healthrider Exerplay. The pedels are controlled by Jillian Michaels voice in which there is no way to cheat. When she says pick it up there goes the speed and when she says bring it down there they slow. I can tell you that what he kept telling me was that my metabolism was off and I had to get it to rise again. I never in my life drank water and have been known to drink up to a gallon a day. I can tell you that only 30 minutes a day while watching TV, drinking water and my 3 - 4 meals with some healthy snacks and in 4 months I lost 60 pounds. I am so toned and slim now 3 years this June. Have kept it off since and am still using my bike. The idea is discipline and consistency and as he use to tell me. Mom it will take you 30 minutes each way to get to a gym and you will be surprised how fast 30minutes will go on the bike. You may not have to use this idea but the idea is to raise the metabolism and then once there you can virtually eat what you like within reason.

Wow, that appeals to me as I used to ride a bike outside (to work and back) in Blackpool. I would really like an exercise bike as I know I would never become bored of it. I may do some research on the internet as to the best ones. Thanks so much and I'm so pleased for you. Riding a bike is so much fun, even if you're not going anywhere lol.

Healthrider Exerplay - The second love of my life, lol
Hey no sleeping after each meal that is not good because you will not burn off any calories. Yup, at first I did 30 minutes 5 days a week now I only do 30 minutes 3 days a week for cardio. Here is what my bike looks like - We are both in love. lol

Is there an option for you to sign up for a gym membership? Or buy an exercise equipment?

Even discounted gym memberships are far too expensive for me. Really, one has to be in work to afford the fees. I have been looking at the prices for exercise bikes for the home and none of those are cheap either. The prices vary wildly and I would be scared of hubby buying me one (say, for Christmas) and it being unsuitable.

Janey... i am here for exactly the same reason.. My favorite dresses dont fit anymore thanks to afternoon siesta..let me see who has better advise..:) Thanks sweetie for this discussion. Weight is not a problem for me. I am just 52 kgs for my 5 ft. :) Eating porridge and cornflakes in the mornings has helped to bring the fat down. :) I drastically reduced eating rice. :) And have included "an apple a day".

It's so frustrating piling the pounds on. I mean, I'm not absolutely huge but way too big for my height of 5ft 4ins. My problem is I sit around far too much..usually on my computer lol. However, if the weather is nice next week I shall get out and about and buy myself some apples!

This may offend you, so apologies in advance. "Can't stick to" is another way of saying "I am enjoying my misery" You know and have thought about your failings and yet you don't (Can't) get rid of them, simply because the enjoyment in these failings outweighs the "Pain of the gain" you would have to endure if you chuck them. There is, however a way out. Carry on your failings, but, imagine you are at your mum's and be " out and about" for a start. The obvious gain will motivate you to more and more exercise till you reach the optimal level. Slow and steady is the method. As a measure of caution please do consult your Doctor before you attempt anything drastic. Hypothyroidism is a matter of concern and you should resolve this issue. Best of luck there and hope you get into shape.

Thanks for the encouragement and the kick up the a** (only joking) lol. Yes, the only person that can change is ME isn't it? No good moping about and worrying about my weight. I have to do something about it. Regarding the thyroid thing...I am borderline under-active so the doctor will not treat it as it is lifelong and may not help my weight problem anyway. However, once I start my new exercise regime.if my weight stays the same of (God forbid) I get bigger THEN I shall go back to the doctor to demand answers!

i recommend to follow a diet, i.e. south beach diet. sweets should be really off. exercise - join a fitness club, company really initiates motivation. walking is good too, if you need company then try having a pet dog to walk along with you. at home, you can do some stretching exercises for 20 to 30 minutes, helps a lot in keeping fit and burning calories. Sauna or steam bath also helps burning fats.

A Fitness Club is out because they are full of thin people and I haven't got the money to join one, unfortunately. I haven't a pet dog (I have a cat) so I can't take one out for a walk. I take it the steam bath/sauna would be at the Fitness Club, would it? So that's out as well. Now then, what's left? Exercises! I shall give them some serious thought, thanks.

HI Janey.. Your over active thyroid has a big impact on your weight. So you better seek a doctor to give you some supplements. It will surely help you lessen your thyroid production. I also have an over active thyroid (hypothyroidism). I was born to have a healthy body but not that fat. Five years ago, I have a normal weight (accdg. to my body mass index) then I noticed I'm getting bigger and heavier. I tried to reduce my meals but still my weight is increasing. I seek a doctor and had my blood tested. So, I have an over active thyroid. They say, it's a lifelong sickness that no matter how well you go on a diet or exercise, you will still have a difficulty losing weight. Like you, I can't finish any exercise. I have bought some gadgets that I merely use like pull-ups to make my tummy smaller, a jump rope to sweat out my fats, a hula-hoop which I never tried using, a dumb bell to tone my muscles but I seldom use and a belt to help me reduce fats. All of those, are just around the house waiting to be used. It's so frustrating that when you stepped on the scale, the figures are terribly high. Now, I am overweight and trying hard to lose weight but nothing seemed to work for me. Hope you can find the best one for you. Best of luck!

Hello! I was told that I am "borderline" with under-active thyroid which - basically, means that if I were to be treated it would be a lifelong thing..and the doc won't risk it. Also, it tends to be free so that would be a huge burden on the NHS. This all happened last year and I doubt very much the situation has changed - which is frustrating but what can I do? I can't force the doc to give me tablets so I am left with trying to lose weight the hard way. Ironically, my weight has never been the same since I took Slimming Tablets at the back end of 2007 before my wedding in April 2008. At the time I was desperate to lose weight so Slimming Tablets seemed the ideal solution..and they were but I don't think - health-wise I've been the same since. I wish I knew the name of the tablets so I could research them online..you know, side-effects and the like.

When I was checked out at the hospital last year I had to go on a treadmill. There's me thinking I'd have a heart attack but I ended up actually ENJOYING myself. Unfortunately, a decent treadmill like that one at the hospital would cost way too much money, plus we don't have the room for one. One thing I may consider is an exercise bike as they don't take up as much room..and I used to ride a bike outside a few years ago, which I sold recently. Thanks for the tips.

I love to do workouts before but not much anymore cause I have been very busy, busy , busy and yet not richy .(^_^) I have learned that you must enjoy doing whatever exercise you do, and while you are at it, it shouldn't be like a "have to do". I hope you love listening to bouncy music and you also love to dance. Cause dancing is a fun way to lose weight and you don't notice it all cause you are more in tuned with the lyrics of the song, the tempo and how your body jives with the tempo. The bottomline is, you must enjoy whatever you are doing and it will come naturally for you. (^_^)

I tend to bounce along with the "bouncy music" nowadays but I DID enjoy dancing around in the past and I did it quite often to keep my weight down, although I wasn't really conscious of my body and how it looked, it was something I did because I just HAD to get up and bop around. Part of my teenage years I suppose. However, the bigger I have become the less dancing I have done and I can't sustain it like I used to due to health problems from last year hindering me. If I take it easy though, I can't see how it can do any harm. Now, where'e me CDs!

How about eating very healthy for the week and rewarding yourself on the weekend? I heard this was an effective way to lose weight because it enforces a healthy diet, while it doesn't completely overpower the desire for sweets.

Sounds good to me. Unfortunately, it costs a lot of money to eat healthily and I have hubby to consider as well. He can eat or drink anything and not put any weight on. I just have to look at food and the opposite happens. Therefore, he doesn't have the incentive to go and look for healthier foods. He's a lot taller than me and needs feeding properly. I don't think he'd appreciate salad in his diet. Also, whenever I cook I always cook for two. Making seperate meals is a good idea but not practical as hubby comes in late from work and we eat at the same time. I like the idea of eating well during the week and rewarding myself with a treat at weekend. I can't see hubby doing the same plus the fact he NEVER eats properly at work. If he did I wouldn't have to do all this cooking and we could eat way more healthier than we do. Another problem I have is that hubby isn't bothered about my weight. If he told me I was a "fat cow" now and again I wouldn't eat for a week lol.
