The gerbils now have a new setup.

Happy as clams - The gerbils with their tank.

After having the gerbils for a few weeks, we got tired of them throwing shavings out of the cages and having to constantly clean up. I also felt that they needed something larger to live in, and the cages just weren't cutting it. Not to mention that they were chewing through the plastic tunnel connecting the 2 cages. So, after searching and trying to find a tank, we were able to pick one up this morning. It measures 30"Lx12"Wx19"H. Not sure if it's a 40 gallon tank, but it's large enough for them to enjoy the space. I had no idea how to put the water bottle into the tank, and I can't find the stand for the wheel, so my idea was to put the cage top into the tank and leave it as it was before. But there's only one wheel in there now, I'm debating whether to put the other one in as well, I might do that later. There's not much in the tank at the moment, but I put a pot and some flexible wood thing in there, along with the one tunnel piece that they've nearly destroyed back in with them. They're happy, they can finally burrow and get into trouble without making a mess, and that makes me happy. We can see them better too, and that's what I like.

Hey you did a great job with the set up, I love the picture it looks like they happy in their new home. I think if you put a second wheel in the tank it might be a bit too crowded. Maybe they can take turns exercising there while the other rests. Looks cute, thanks for sharing the picture.

You're welcome. The 2 wheels are inside the cage as is their water bottle and food dish. I'm hoping that this setup works and then they have the rest of the tank to blast around in.

It sounds like really good set up to me. Do you really need two wheels at a time? Do they go running together ? I know some critters enjoy old paper towel rolls and stuff like that to tear up. Hope you are going to post pictures.

Gerbils in wheels - Both at the same time. They fight otherwise for the wheel.
I posted one picture and now have another one here. They use both wheels at the same time, when I had the old setup, they would be on a wheel in each cage and go back and forth. We don't have a lot of tubes for them, and when they do have them, they chew through them quickly. I don't know what else to give them that isn't toxic, food boxes and the like. I'm using pine bedding right now, I'd like to use aspen, but right now I can't afford it, otherwise I'd have it for them.

Burrowing a tunnel - Love that she burrows almost all the way across the tank.
One of them started to burrow in the bottom of the tank. She decided to bury the one wheel in shavings now.

hi kris I never raised any gerbils but it sound like they will be fun to watch. You have made a nice home for them and they can have fun getting into mischief without making a mess of wood shavings on the floor. I remember one parakeet we had that alway threw out so much of her sees onto the floor. What a mess. Have fun .
