Pakistan is an ally of convenience to the US. Once the main figureheads of the terror network are eliminated and the US feels safe, Pakistan may well be abandoned as its internal strife will be a liability. US policy here is flawed from the very beginning as the emphasis was to use the country as a buffer state against what was formerly Soviet Union. The method was to beef it up militarily. Human resource and democracy, the real strengths of a nation were completely ignored. That was in the days of cold war. On very short sighted act was the birth of Taliban. US conceived it and Pakistan delivered it, to throw a spoke in the wheels of Soviet plans of occupying Afghanistan.. Now that brain "Child" is the monster as it has turned renegade. Pakistan, today is in a precarious situation, on the brink of being a failed state, bled by its military to stave off its internal conflicts and to keep up the momentum of insurgency against India. As it is now heavily dependent on the US for survival, yes, it may have actually helped in the Osama operation. I personally have very little doubt that it had harbored him for money or ideology and sold him down the river for survival.
