That time of the month?

I was just having a conversation with my mother and she mentioned that these days girls start their periods earlier than they used to. She said she believed the average age that girls start having their periods is closer to 9 years old. When I was a kid I started my period when I was 12ish. Well my daughter will be 9 this year, so hearing that girls can start this as early as 9 is terrifying me! I'm not ready for my daughter to grow up that fast! I'm praying it waits until she's at least 12 like I was. How old was your daughter when she began to have her monthly friend?

Well it dawned on me today it's something I'll need to start thinking about in the next few years. I'm not even sure if she knows about it because I don't mention it often.. too many boys in the house to be that open. So I will have to sit her down soon and explain that it may start within the next few years. Ugh! I'm not ready for this!

Most likely your daughter has gotten some information from her girl friends and from health education at school. You didn't say how old your daughter was, but I would advise you start your woman to woman talks early. This will prevent embarrassment for both of you. It will also allow for more personal conversations as she gets older. If you want her to talk to you when she is sixteen you better start communicating now.

I was fourteen, I think my daughter was twelve or thirteen. I have actually been hearing this since 1980. One of my first sisters in law said it was from all the sugar in our diet causing early maturity. Now I hear that it is because of all the hormones in our meats and milk and also from genetically altered veggies. How is she behaving? Does she look like she is developing.

Your mother is right. I know several children who started at nine and I think it is awful for them. I was 14 and my daughter about 13 or just before her 13th birthday. Do you think it is the nutrition or too many hormones in food? I really do not know the reason at all. perhaps someone on Mylot can enlighten us. Gotta runa dn check that the pool is okay for God to swim in

I personally believe it's the additives in foods these days.. but I don't have any proof of that. I just hope my daughter's waits as long as possible!

I also think that girls are having periods earlier than before, usually most of them will have their first period before the age of 13 and my sister and I have ours at around 12 as well. I also wish your daughter not having period that early because it is such a trouble moment when we have period sometimes, especially when it is with serious pain. However, we just do not have any way to stop it from coming as our brains will do it automatically itself which is involuntary.

I think she was about thirteen or fourteen when it hit. I was at work and she called me as calm as can be and when she told me she was still calm and I was freaking out. I remember how painful it was for me with the cramps and all. Even though she said she was fine I came right home and she really was ok. She didn't start with the cramps till about 18. Then it became really bad.

I do not cramp or anything.. I do get irritable though. Hopefully my daughter doesn't cramp either.

I don't have a daughter, but I'm thirty and I was ten years old when I started my period. I developed earlier than a lot of girls though. When I was ten I was already 5'4, so I literally grew up fast. My older sister was eleven years old when she started hers. All I know is that I didn't want it. The stupid cramps were horrible every single month. I was frequently anemic.

Even 10 sounds too young to me. Why can't it wait until adulthood? At least then there wouldn't be teenage pregnancies!

My daughter will be 9 in september. I don't think she is close to starting hers. At least I hope not lol. I had a cousin who got it at 9. She was pretty freaked out about it because her mom hadn't had the talk with her yet. I haven't heard anything about girls starting their periods earlier though. I was almost 14 when mine started. I've been debating on starting to talk with my daughter about it just in case.

Gosh, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but my granddaughter, who is now 14, started getting her period when she was about 8 or 9. She also started developing in other ways at about that same time. I read somewhere that it has something to do with all the processed foods everyone eats plus other things in our environment that weren't there just a few decades ago. Even when we try to cook homemade meals from scratch, just about everything we put into our meals are processed and loaded with all kinds of chemicals. I've felt so badly for Angela since she got hers because she gets bad cramps and I just don't think it's fair for someone that young to have to go through that! She'll have to deal with it for enough years as it is! Actually, I was only 10 when I started but I was younger than the average back then. I think my daughter was 11 or 12 but unfortunately her daughter outdid us both. Annie

Well through this discussion it has become apparant to me that most girls seem to start right around the same time as their mother's did.. perhaps only slightly earlier due to the processed junk we eat these days. So if I started around 12 I might be able to wait until my daughter is 11 before she has to deal with it. That would be allright I supposed though it would be great if she could wait until 13 or 14.. not that she or I have that option!

Wow, 9 years old? I couldn't imagine starting that early. It was bad enough I started developing elsewhere early on. I wouldn't have wanted to worry about my period too. Anyway, I don't have a daughter, but I was 13 when I started mine. Happy mylotting!

I was a little too mature for my age and I looked forward to my developments. It's scary to think how much I knew when I was so young. I don't want that to be my daughter.. I hope mother nature lets her wait quite a long time before we have to start worrying about that stuff.

i have 3 girls.. my eldest is 17 now, and she had her first period, about the same age as i did.. at 11.. i think that is the average in my family - most of my cousins and my niece also had our first period around that age.. and most of us are similarly built.. my second daughter is 10 this year.. she's a bit smaller than the elder sister when she was at that age.. but i guess i need to sit down and speak to her soon...

Dearra was a month shy of 12. Naomi seems to be developing a lot more slowly than Dearra, so we shall see. Maybe she'll be more like me. I was 13.

Yup. I read that the growth hormones in some of our food was contributing to girls hitting puberty early, so I switched (as much as I could) to organic meat and dairy products.

Waiting longer is better in my opinion.. not that we have a choice in the matter! Wouldn't it be nice if we did?

I've been hearing the same thing. It's all over the news as well. I too was about 12. My daughter just turned 7 a few months ago and my mom keeps telling me I should really start having that talk with her or she will totally freak out. I'm not ready for that talk yet. She's still my baby! I have a friend whos daughter is only 2 days older than my 7 year old and her daughter started her monthly a month after turning 7. It does Terrify me as well. I've got 3 daughters and I cant emagine having to do that talk 3 times and well before I think I should have to. I guess we just have to let mother nature take it's course.

Hi. katsmeow1213. I have two daughters and their ages are, five and three. My three year old will be four next month. So, my daughter's aren't ready at all for their menstrual cycle to come on. I had my first menstrual cycle when I was in sixth grade in middle school. I was, at least 12 years old at that time. I could not imagine my daughter starting her menstrual cycle that early. That is very scary as a mother to see. I hope that your daughter starts her menstrual cycle when she is 12 years old.

I don't have any children but, started my periods around the age of 12 too - I still thought that was the average age too - one of my school friends started hers at age of 8 so I guess that is unusual!

my wife had her period when she was 11, she had her first child when she was 16, we married when she was 15; our only daughter had her periods at same age; our granddaughter is 12 now she began having periods last month only, seems it is related to heredity too.

My daughter is 11. But not yet. I also like after 12. But let me share one joke about her. Once we all were in the visiting room chatting with each other. suddenly she went to the toilet and call me,"Mum come here." So I rushed to the toilet thinking that she had got her first period. But she told me something else about her school friend. I got a slight angry and told her. I said,"If you call me like this, what will I think. I thought you have got your first period." She smiled and simply told, "Mum, that I got last week." Imagine as a mother How I got worried and angry. But Actually it was only a joke. she didn't.

I saw a discussion show recently on TV addressing just this issue. It is true that nw the girls are starting their periods earlier than ever before now, some as early as at age 8 and 9. Its terrifying! The reason for this has been determined to be that now the meals are richer in nutrients than before and also the fact that most of veggies and fruits are laced with chemical fertilizers that play havoc with our hormone cycles. Also exposure to TV, cinema and adult websites via internet play an emotional roles in the girls causing early menstruation. Coupled with lack of physical activity and physically stressful work, the result is early menstruation.

Girls _can_ start as early as 9, but no way is it the average. It's still unusual to start before 11. I started at 12, but my daughter didn't start until she was well past 14.
