Is Multitasking Efficient?

Are you a multi- tasker? I'am. Multi tasking is considered a positive attribute in the workplace. In fact it is demanded of the modern office worker. You will be interrupted every few minutes by new emails, phone calls, meetings, demands on your time. On top of this, you actually need to perform your job. If you are not a natural multi-tasker how do you cope with all these demands on your attention. It has been argued whether multi tasking is efficient and how it may limit or help human productivity. If we are constantly moving on from a task, how can we accomplish anything at all? Should companies encourage multi tasking or is there a different way?

I hate it when computing terms are applied to humans. But then I'm obsolete. I need another core or two bring me up to speed.

I guess I am old school. I can not multi-task. I rather do one thing at a time and do it efficiently. I think that multi-tasking, although it is useful in some cases, causes mistakes. With multi-tasking there is no attention payed to the job at hand. Concentration and dedication are the key to getting things done the right way.

I agree that multi-tasking is useful and effective in some cases. A lot depends on what's being juggled. The more complex the task the more it will hurt your productivity. I think it's a good thing having the ability to focus on on one thing and give it a time limit before moving on something else. If you give something less attention, your work will suffer, and you'll find that if you multitask you don't spend as much time on each item. But then again, there may be some people though, who are better suited to handle multitasking challenges.

I'm not rich, or at least not yet, but I believe that multi tasking is not efficient at all. Actually it's efficient to the company that you work for but not you. I believe that the executives on top do not multi task. To succeed I don't think it's a good thing to multi task. Don't get me wrong the people that you are working for will love that you are multitasking, especially if you are good at it. But I believe that will only turn us to robots, knowing how to multi task on a few couple skills, doing it over and over again. That does not give us enough time or thought to polish those skills are add to it. So all in all I feel that being great at multi tasking turns you into a robot on a group of selected skills, but keeps you from mastering any of them to your advantage or even get to enjoy the beauty or art of your work. But once again, they are music to managers.

Yes, very efficient as long as you can handle it. But sometimes it can lead to a mistakes. All we can do is to have presence of mind as well as don't panic as you are doing your task and always be happy and relax..:))

I'm multi-tasking right now. I am at work right now, doing accounting, using my inter-office instant message system, on the phone, dealing with clients in person and on the phone, and hopping back and forth between mylot and my job. Of course, I know I should be doing something more productive than mylotting (for as far as work is concerned), however, I need a break sometimes, so mylot is my break.

I'm a multi-tasker so its not difficult for me to cope up with that kind of office environtment, I feel bored whenever I'm stock at one task. I think you can still be efficient if you are doing multi task, just be focus and concentrate on your job and you'll be good at it.

I multitask all the time. I work online while I am watching tv or doing homework. If I did not multitask I would never get anything done. It drives my husband crazy that I can multitask and he is not good at it. I feel that multitasking is a necessary skill nowadays.

I am not a good multi-tasker as I work much more efficiently if I concentrate on just one task. However, some people can work quite well with a few task doing at the same time. I think sometimes we need to be having the multi tasking ability so that we can cope with the office work as what you have mentioned.

Multi-tasking is awesome. Listening to music, watching tv, surfing the net and eating are my normal multi-tasks, however it saves alot of time and effort and I'm satisfied with the work I accomplish.
