New IPL Play-Offs,Fair or Unfair?

hi friends.if i had started this at the start of the IPL,it might have been different and i am pretty sure there would be a few discussions already. just in case, one doesn't know what play-offs means. the top 2 teams will play each other.winner goes to finals but loser of that match wont go out. The 3rd and 4th team will battle with loser being eleminated but the winner doesnot go to finals. he has to meet the loser from the first battle. pretty much every commentator from Bogle to Shastri commented how great this system is. i agree.they did quote a certain match where a team won 11 out of 14 matches only to get knocked out early and it being unfair. i totally agree that if a team is consistent through out the tournament, its only fair to give it another chance. but someone told me IF PEOPLE CONTINUE TO SPEAK ONLY THE GREATNESS OF SOMETHING,THERE IS A VERY HIGH POSSIBILITY THAT THEY WONT NOTICE THE NOT-SO-GREAT ASPECT OF THAT SOMETHING. and it was kinda true. i mean while trying to make it fair for the table toppers, they have been unfair to the third and fourth team. i mean they also battles nine other teams to get to the play-offs stage. while the top 2 either goes straight to finals or if lose, have another chance for finals, the bottom 2 have to win their first match but they have to battle yet another game before finals. HOW FAIR IS THAT? for all we know, this method makes it easier for the top 2 teams to make it to finals and makes it harder for the other two. why didn't they just select the top 2 and send them straight to finals? need your input on this.

Hi stardust! In my opinion this play off system is just unfair. Why top two teams should get the special privilege? This system is completely unfair for the 3rd and 4th placed teams. If consistency is what they want to award then simply finish all the games and award the team which has scored maximum wins or points. So keeping this play off thing and talking about consistency doesn't make sense. This is just a gimmick. And I too think that some teams especially Mumbai Indians might have influenced this system. We will see how it goes. The teams that lose will definitely question this system! especially 3rd and 4th placed team if it loses second game after winning first! Happy Mylotting!

there is one more thing.earlier when team like mumbai indians get to the 16 points necessary for the semi-finals and have a game or 2 in their hand, they give people who haven't played the tournament a chance. now with top 2 being considered a virtual finalist place,no team will wanna rest important players and give youngsters a chance.

Hi stardust, Nice to meet you after a long time. You seem to have disappeared after the world cup. Anyway the topic you have raised is quiet interesting. I have been hearing many commentators commenting about the play offs but never really paid attention to that and I came to know about this new play off system through you post only. Sounds interesting giving second chance to 1st and 2nd placed teams and rightly so. A team plays very well all along and comes to the top of the table, one bad game in play offs and out of the tournament. As per you the same philosophy should also be applicable to 3rd and 4th placed teams, It would have been alright with me except that one more additional game. In defense of the law makers however it can be said that IPL is a long drawn tournament and whoever comes to the top is not by fluke it is by shear capability and that has to be respected.

Nice to know that somebody did miss me.well the reason is simple.i turned off the tv the second sachin got out and turned it back on during the 40th over.watched it all the way with dhoni blasting india to win.suddenly out of blue,a thought came that dhoni pretty much made people to place sachin and yuvi at the second and even if he scored single digit score throughout a year, his position will never be in trouble and got depressed. ofcourse i had a suspicion that there will be world cup overdose at mylot and i didn't think i could take that. nice point.i didn't notice that it was another manuever to make it longer.

Hi, This new experimental rule is just to stretch the matches. Why they needed this format as nothing would be wrong if followed the earlier pattern. Two teams get most of the benefit while the rest would be struggling for a berth. If the first two top teams clash and the winner goes to final, the loser would not be playing the final but battling for the third spot. I too feel this is an unfair decision. Why can not they stick to the traditional format of quarter final or super six? The winners thus enters into the semis. No I do not like this.

I just want to say that everything has advantages as well disadvantages. The advantages is the team who will lose the match of 1st qualifier, will get another chance to qualify for the final, but the disadvantage is the winner of the second qualifier will have to win two matches in order to reach the semi final. That's the problem, say the team from 3rd/4th place managed to win the eliminator but couldn't win the qualifier 2, how will they feel ? Won't the feel that despite winning the eliminator match, they couldn't get another chance but the team lost in the first qualifier got another chance to qualify for the final.

this rule is fair. because top two teams reach that position by playing good cricket. so there is nothing wrong to give one more chance to them.

I feel new IPL play off is fair for some teams who finishes 1 and 2 and unfair who finishes at 3rd and 4th.
