There are many charities to give your hard earned money to. Some are within your own country, for the poor and homeless or for cancer or children with lukemia. Some are abroad, like third world countries or the awful tsunami in Japan. If you only have a spare £1 and you have to make a ethical decision, do you give to your own or to a forign country? me? i always believe you sort your own backyard before you venture further afield.

i have donated to charities in the past, but my best work was my charity work to help build leisure centers and install electricity in the poor reigions so South Africa, i have also donated for malaria treatment for those in africa with the lack of treatment for malaria. I have donated to WaterAid of which helps provide clean water and senatation to many 3 world countries. My latest work is Tanzania where i helped provide small donations to help go towards installing electric over there.

First, I support a Christian ministry, then a local food bank, the Salvation Army and a homeless shelter. They're all important, I think and I often wish I had more to give. There are many needs everywhere.

I do, I do for several years actually. Firstly I do faithfully give to my church weekly. I also have dedicated several years to The Ronald McDonalds Childrens Charity. I have done so many runway shows for the charity. Granted I have earned too but it was not earning that drew me to the charity and am still a faithful giver. I normally do not consider the country first, usually I look at the cause and validity of the charily before I decide on which charities.

i was not aware of ronald mcdonalds charity until Hollie had to go in for an operation when she was a baby. 3 weeks she was trussed up in plaster and everyday we spent by her side. we come from an island so we had to stay somewhere near the hospital. ronald mcdonald put us up all that time free of charge. wonderful! a worthy cause.

My aunt is really interested in social works and because of her me and my family have donated many times. We usually donate to the orphanages or the old age homes.

Hi ajk, I have been doing some charity lately. I contributed some of my income to Make a wish foundation in India. Me and my hubby fund a small boy for his education in South America though World Vision. We also donated some money to Red Cross for Japan Tsunami victims. I believe in giving, so i feel good being able to help people around the world and not only within my my country!

I give so much in my Church's offering plate and we have a rule that it first goes to the needy in the congregation, the needy in the community, there is a downtown mission that they support, and after that, there are the missions abroad and then there are places where they really need help. I cannot afford to give to help the poor in places like AFrica, and Asia. I feel that it is bet to help the poor in your own country. I do not mean enabling them, but the money here goes to help them gain an educaiton, donate clothes, etc. but when you give to places like AFrica, or Asia, the money may go into a leader's pocket and not get down to the people so it is a vicious cycle and one feels that the money is donated to make your own country poorer and their country richer.

My favorite charities are for animals, children and elderly people. I like to buy things from charity shops like Oxfam. It helps poor people in developing countries. If I have a spare pound I am likely to give it to overseas aid for the very poor and needy. The year before last I traveled to South Africa with my disabled son. Whilst in Cape Town we had a walking tour around a poor African township. We saw terrible poverty and an Irish charity were working hard to build new houses for these poor folk. In my home country there are some homeless people and I feel very sorry for them.

homelessness is devastating to see first hand. i think people in the UK don't appreciate quite how bad it is within our own country.

My late husband fought a terrible fight in the name of cancer . Sadly, this is a battle that he was not to win. I still fight this battle for him in his name. giving to cancer research may one day give someone else a reason to not have to fight. It is a good cause and i will not be sorry to donate.

Hi ajk No donations from me to any of the charities. I have seen the too ugly sides of these operating here and practically I have lost trust in that word. But yes, I do donate some of my time, some of my clothes, some of my books to the needy without having any mediator - charity organization. I had been regularly visiting an orphanage here until 3 months back - since the last few months, my health doesnt permit me to venture out more often.
@ajk111 (2495)

yes, people do not seem to be aware of how much these charitable companies deduct for their "boards of directors" who take home a handsome wage before any of it gets to the needy.

I'm always for charitable institutions that better education in public schools and after the 911 attack on the US, we bought shirts and pins to show our support to a country that was trying to put pieces back together and these days, I've been thinking of buying products to send relief items like clean water to countries that really need it, like Rwanda and Japan but if I only had a like a dollar or a pound, I would just give it to an institution it would reach right away, so definitely my own backyard.

I would like to make sure that the money I donate goes to the people who really need help, not into the pockets of those fund-raising companies. I don't donate money to any organization that takes 'admin fees' from the donations. If I can, I would like to give directly to the person in need. I would also like to donate my time and work as a volunteer.
@ajk111 (2495)

that is the best why as you see the results in front of your own eyes.

Helping people does not based or depend in your own country alone. As long as you are sincere in helping people whether in your place or in the other part of the world.. For me, i will help first my countrymen, .i am not bias in helping but i really notice that many of my fellow countrymen needs help. So they are my first priority. Just like helping your family member before helping your neighbor..

I make several donations through the year to varies children charities. And then at Christmas time, just about every other time I will drop change in the Salvation Army can. Then I donate a lot of clothes to the clothing drives. And then I planned to run a half marathon for Leukemia and Lymphoma but a health issue has put this on pause. But I will still do it.
