I want to know if there are any free methods for me to learn Hindi. I am surrounded by Indian friends but I'd rather learn on my own than getting a tutorial from one of them. Can you suggest any website or do I really have to buy those language cd's?

Hi ddaguno Many already suggested you the paths/websites to follow... I have not much to add but just a few words to see you through - to the success - When we start learning a new language we are likely to make many errors speaking wrong words or even pronouncing them wrong... Many a times, people around us make fun of our learnings or the usage, but never get disheartened as if you get dishearted or bugged by such remarks, you will lose the enthu to learn... I am a Hindi speaking guy and I fell into such traps when I was learning some Basic Japanese for some meetings and discussions with clients... but they were quite co-oprative and I could learn some of their language.

The best are videos that will show you how to speak and also tell you the meaning of certain phrases. Here is one site: http://www.youtube.com/user/itwasnoteasy#g/u There are several videos here and you will find them quite useful Hindi bahut asaan hai. Tum jaldi sikoge -

I think I should have the tutorial first before the movies because i have watched a few bolywood movies but didnt understand the hindi words. Subtitles took most of my attention

You can learn Hindi online. There are so many sites which teaches Hindi. However, the speaking of a language can be developed by speaking with others only. I also problems with the speaking Hindi in the beginning. But when I started speaking Hindi with the people who speakd Hindi well, my language improved enormously.
