What is the best street food for you?

Street foods are the most handy and at the same time economical food that you can have anytime especially when you are short of money. I love fried squid balls and kikiam, and i love pork barbecue! But I love balut the best. Balut is a boiled, fertilized egg, that is popular here in the Philippines. It is the most succulent street food for me. You can sprinkle salt on it, or dip it in vinegar. It is so yummy. Unfortunately, a lot of non-Filipinos find it an odd food and others even consider it gross. One time, in Fear Factor, I was shocked to see one contestant not able to eat balut but was able to gobble a roach! Yikes!

I don't think I would be able to stomach a balut myself- it would be very challenging for me to even try it. Do you eat the whole thing, bones, organs and all, or do you just eat the meat off the young chick? Personally, I'd rather just eat a plain egg, or let the chicken(duck etc) at least hatch before eating. The healthiest street food would be barbecued, and not fried or deep fried(meat). Fruits and vegetables would be best too. I'd say the deepfried stuff along with grains(noodles, rice, etc) would be the more unhealthy stuff.

that is understandable, wiggles. if one is not accustomed to eating such food, it would be very hard even to swallow. i saw one time in tv a man swallowing a live small octopus and i squirmed. i eat the whole thing except that hard part of the egg (i dont know how it's called). there are no fruits and vegetables along the streets sold like street foods.

but that i think is better than eating a live bug! i had seen people eating them alive! those things that you enumerated, it is only the octopus and eel that i had tasted. fruits and veggies ready to eat would be a nice one on the streets..

I think I could eat live bugs ahead of a balut, to tell the truth. There is something that just seems so taboo about eating a 'half-born animal'... I love eating things like squid, octopus- and really want to try other things like snake, crocodile, eel, cooked crickets, cooked scorpions, snake blood, etc. Maybe there isn't fruits and vegetables as street food where you live- but, I have heard of many other places that have them as street food(cut up fresh, ready to eat out of containers(Thailand I know for sure does).

i do hope you'll come and visit us here, ajk, and experience street foods. though i don't really buy frequently but once in a while, i always love the experience. i am at times picky on how the vendors look like and how they prepare the food.

I too love to eat Balut, but since we moved to another house I rarely eat it already since no vendor can get in our subdivision .

It's not a kind of nut but it's a kind of sea shell. I don't know what's it called though. But I see most men eat it.

Char Koay Teow - Also know as Fried Koay Teow, one of Penang's delicacies.
Oh gosh, there are so many street food here in Penang, but we call it hawkers' food here, and I love practically all of them. Penang is very famous for its hawkers' food. So sometimes you may even see hawkers' stalls by the roadside. One of my favourite is “Char Koay Teow”, also known as Fried Koay Teow. It is considered one of Penangites’ favourite hawker dishes. It is made up of strips of flat rice noodles which is about 1 centimeter wide. The noodles are fried in a wok over high heat mixed with bean sprouts, a handful of chives, cockles, prawns and blend together with some dark and light soya sauce and chilli paste. Sometimes it is stir-fried with chicken egg or duck egg. It is sometimes served on a piece of banana leaf on a plate. And some hawkers may top off the dish with fresh crab meat. Yummy, now my mouth is watering. You can find this food at any part of Penang during breakfast, lunch or dinner time. This dish is so famous in Penang that there is a hawker stall whereby people would have to queue up just to order the dish. So if you ever visit Penang, you have to try this dish.

I think the best street food for me are fishballs. For the record, this street food is available almost everywhere plus its price is very consistent. If theres a price hike on all basic commodities, well this one never increased its value. And thats way back years and years ago. I remembered when i was 5, a mcdonalds happy meal costs around 20 pesos and fishballs are 50 centavos. Now the happy meal costs 50 to 90 pesos and the fishball? Its still 50 centavos a piece. :)

The options for street food are so huge that I cant really put my finger down on a best food LOL Mostly the food has to be cheap, as hygienic as possible and tasty. My city, thankfully, has a huge variety of such street food but the quality and cleanliness is not the same everywhere. But, touchwood, my stomach seems to be immune to it so I enjoy all of them… BTW...no offence please, but even I find the balut gross. No way I'd taste it, just saw it on TV and that was enough for me.

This one's tough because I like eating street foods - particularly those which feel clean though sold in the streets. LOLs I love pork barbecue too and I'm glad such barbecues are so available here in Cebu. Here there is a place called Larsian aside an "esquina" near the Fuente Osmena Circle in Cebu. Their barbecues are excellent. I also love siomai and tempura. Real yum!

Hi. bingskee. I don't enjoy eating any of the foods that you have mentioned here. I do love to eat hot dogs. This is the only street food that I would eat. Plus others, that never seem to be classified as being extremely yucky! We don't have street foods around here. Maybe in the major cities this is presently seen, but not here in the town that I live in. I think that it is very useful to have street foods especially when you are on the go, or walking as far as leisure is concerned.

Bingskee- I had to look up the term as I was not familiar with it, maybe it's just not a term we use here in the states or at least not a term I'd heard before. However, once I looked up the definition I can say that my two favorites would be kabobs and hot dogs. There is nothing like a NY style or Chicago style dog! We see more vendors of this sort in the large cities, fewer in rural places like where I live now. Of course, every city seems to have "fast food" but that's not quite the same I think. Namaste-Anora

hello, anora. fast food is different from street food. street foods are common in Asian countries like the Philippines. as the name connotes, these vendors are seen along the streets, sometimes alone, or in groups.

Yes, as I said we have street vendors in large cities here in the US, just not in the smaller towns.

Well, I stick to the traditional pair of fish balls and kikiam...and possibly a round of qwek-qwek. I am not fond of street food but I devour them when I have the chance. I usually have a fix for them and I try to buy weekly from the market both kikiam and the fishball when I got nothing to nibble on. As for balut, it has become a vayant in our house and the mama is not wandering the streets but now selling his wares to our local night market. I like balut but I like to eat it occasionally, just to be reminded of the taste. I don't care about foreigners not liking our street food or considering them odd because in my opinion, foreign street food or street food from other countries are often odd as well. As for the balut versus roach, the duckling has my vote. At least the duckling is clean, unlike the roach.

indeed, what is odd to them is not to us, and vice versa. i am not seeing a lot of kwek kwek nowadays.

Hi bingskee I am not much of a fan of street foods but will not say it is gross. I can't fathom a person eating a roach though. lol As for street foods, yes I am picky but mostly because I did see a show here where some vendors to not have facilities and a hidden camera showed where some vendors would not wash their hands before handling the foods. Eeek. Then again I have always been very picky. But I can't say that is all true for all vendors though. I love Puerto Rican foods, anything except for sea food related foods. They smell and look yummy but my last anaphalactic shock prevents me from going near it. Because it is just my boyfriend and I at home and although he is Caucasian he does love Puerto Rican Food, only problem is that there is no such thing as cooking small amounts of it. So from time to time I do like visiting a certain Park we have here and picking up some yummy fried Puerto Rican food. Tastes so authentic and delicious. The beef or pork stuffed potato balls are my favorites. We call them Papa rellena. Yum, now I will have to take a ride some day soon to get my fix. lol

I love chicken proven. It is a fried breaded part of the chicken probably from the intestines. I know it sounds nasty but If you taste it I bet you'll probably forget where it comes from. We have a lot of vendors of it here in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. You can eat it with a "puso" (packed rice) and buko juice(coconut water+ milk) then instantly you already eaten a meal with just 15 php (0.35$). Its is very economical but every time you eat street foods you get the risk of getting infectious disease because you cannot be sure with the food preparations. So eat at your own risk.

as i said, live dangerously! i am not a fan of chicken intestines. i prefer pork intestines because they can be cleaned easily. the puso is an interesting version of rice. someone in the neighborhood showed us how it is done.
