Ant Attack

There's not a single ant to be seen anywhere in my kitchen, yet this morning when I opened my sugar jar it was crawling with them. I'm glad I wasn't making coffee in the dark like I sometimes so otherwise it would have had a rather crunchy texture!! How can this be? Perhaps they parachuted in without leaving a trace elsewhere. But how did they deal with a closed screw top jar? Clever blighters. But more importantly, how do I stop them coming back now that they've worked out where I keep the sugar? Do you occasionally get ants in your house? How do you deal with them?

hi greenmoo Ihave never seen an ant here in our room but then we do noit have any beguiling sugar around for them. when I had my own apartment we put boric acid powder where they trailed in and that they willnot walk in as it does something to them.I have noticed they are worse during rainy spells too.I have heard baby powder does the same thing. You need to wipe out the scent of their trail,

Yum! Extra protein, too... I've heard that ants don't like cucumber peel, but would you really want to litter your house with that?

Are you sure about that?

Fairly. Cucumbers round our way always wear arm bands to stay afloat.

At least cucumber peel wouldn't sneak into the sugar jar and drown in my coffee.

I do in the summer. Seems like when it's hot out they think they can march right in the back door without even so much as a how do you do! I sprinkle pepper on the door sill and it seems to work! Good luck with the little varments!

I wonder if it's just because they're looking for cool when they invade us in hot weather. When it's hot and I leave the house door open the house fills with flies.

Considering I live in the country I do get them, but I don't think it truly matters whether it is a rural or city setting. Ants are juts annoying. Usually I sue sprays to help deter them, but the best stuff I ever used my mom told me about and I had a hard time finding it...I think i finally found it at a KMArt here...it's called Terro ant killer. It's a real thick liquid you put a small dot on a piece of cardboard and place it where the ants are located. Within an hour you will see them piling on top of one another to feed off of it. They eat the poison and take it back to the hive/nest and then they all die off. It is better than any other product I have used. Hope you can get your hands on this stuff.

Someone else mentioned Terro, but also baking soda. I'll try the baking soda first as I'm not too keen on poisons in the house.

I can't the vision of parachuting ants out of my head now! I've been lucky in that I've never had a problem with them, therefore I have no idea what to do if they invaded my kitchen. I hope someone else can help you.

Ants are incredible creatures really. They seem to be invincible.

I don't like the flying versions but I know what you mean.

Ants don't like Baking Soda. So if you sprinkle some around the edges of rooms it deters them and you don't have to destroy them or their nests.

Several people have mentioned baking soda. It sounds like a good optionf or someone with kids and animals at home. Thanks.

I have ants so bad right now I had to type a notice to my family and post it on the fridge. The notice explains that the ants are looking for food, mostly sweets, and that everyone else needs to start doing their part to make sure we aren't attracting them.. like rinsing bottles and cans and taking them out, sweeping, not leaving their juice cups sitting on the counter without being rinsed or washed. Unfortunately with me working evenings my house gets pretty trashed when I'm not home and I don't have the energy to clean it as often as I should..

Everyone in my house seems to leave the honey jar sticky. So I keep it away from the other foodstuffs now.

I use Terro Ant Killer. It's a viscious liquid that you drop onto a little cardboard and they come in droves and slurp it up, carry some back to the nests and kill themselves and the rest of the family. It doesn't take a very large opening for the ants to find your sugar. As has been suggested, clean off the counter(s) daily and put out some ant killer.

Scattered sugar must be such a draw for them. My floor is plain cement in there at the moment, which makes it hard to brush properly. i guess they've been attracted by crumbs of sweet stuff there.

There is also same problem is going on in our house also. I used to see the ants daily crawling the wall. I don't find the ants in our kitchen, but I find them on the walls making their journey. I don't know what they do on the wall. But I never touch them and allow them to go.

I guess they've found a direct, safe route from A to B.

Maybe the jar wasn't properly covered. That always happen in our pantry where the honey was filled with these little thing. And how are we going to remove those creatures if they've already drowned on the honey? I always remind them to keep the jar properly close because ants are trackers of sweets. If I keep the honey inside the fridge, it will harden. So every time they get honey, I tell them to wipe the jar with wet cloth so the taste or smell will vanish.

The sugar was in a screw top jar. I know ants are small, but this is ridiculous!

it can be annoying finding ants in our house, and many ants including the common pavement ant can be difficult to control.considering tht ants frequently travel through sanitary areas and before they end up on our contertops we should take steps to keep them away from our family, pets and food

It's a good job they don't have big feet!
