If Federal taxes were voluntary, would you contribute?

Some people try to argue taxation is voluntary anyway, but that is not the scope of this question. You can even take it one step further: If you did "donate" and could ear-mark where the money went, what would you put it toward?

Pretty much nothing. I would only pay for national defense, and only as much as would be needed to defend the mainland. The Federal government isn't supposed to be, and shouldn't be, involved in most of what it does.

Pretty reasonable. Might some argue interstate trade and travel are imperiled if we restrict the Federal government that much?

I'm ok with that. Let the states sign their own free-trade agreements with each other. Power to the states. That's how it was supposed to be.

It was called the Articles of Confederation and it stunk, and that was with only 13 states. Imagine an America with border levies and important laws posted at every border. Many interstate companies would crash and burn. It could get ugly.

Base on the government's handling of tax dollars, even if I could decide how my tax dollars would be used, I still wouldn't voluntarily pay anything to the Federal government.

As "devil's advocate", I have to say many people would not want you to get any benefit from the Fed then.

Most of us don't really pay income taxes anyway. No one who gets back more than they pay into the federal budget pays anything.. in fact, many middle class and lower income people get back more than they pay.

So true. I'm trying hard to stay under that magic line of tax vs benefit.

IF I could earmark EXACTLY what my taxes went to and I could FORCE it to ONLY be used for what I deemed necessary or would use, then I would. I actually believe that all consumers should be able to earmark where their money goes, and anybody in government who spends any tax money on anything OTHER than what a consumer earmarks it for should be arrested and removed from government IMMEDIATELY. This means that if I decide I want my tax dollars to go 50% toward public education in MY community and of that money, I want 85% of it going to teacher salaries and classroom materials and a better physical education program, then I want proof from the local school district that my tax money is going to those things. If I decide I want the other 50% going towards road improvement projects and toward emergency services such as 911 and paramedics and fire and flood control, then that's what I want it used for. If I want NONE of my tax dollars going towards any benefits for government employees, towards programs I do not now use or NEVER HAVE USED, then I want to receive proof of that or see the people who are misusing my funds arrested and removed from office. I'm sick of the lies and I'm sick of the waste. If they are not going to use things the way WE WANT THEM USED, then they should be stiffed and get NOTHING. By the way, I would never want any of my tax dollars to go toward any illegals who try to use or abuse or misuse any of our programs that are here to help CITIZENS, I don't necessarily want any of my tax dollars to go towards public transportation in my city because I don't use it and it's crappy anyway, I don't want my tax dollars to go towards financing any wars, ANY business bailouts or tax cuts, ANY government/city vehicles for maintenance, gas purchase, etc. I wish there was a way to track this stuff and punish people who ever misuse funds on these things they should NEVER be wasted on!!!

Thanks for the answer. Too bad oversight of that much control over expenditure would cost a fortune and noone would probably choose to fund it. Catch 22.
